Ive been staying here for decades. Very reliable. Large old building, used to the max. Staff is friendly and hardworking. The place is kept quite clean. Post-pandemic, Ive noticed: not enough personnel at check-in, which can take up to an hour. Prices seem to be up. Hours for café and laundry are shorter. Luggage lockers can be vexing to use and pay for. Rooms are clean and beds are good.
I had a fantastic experience staying here. I travel solo and oftentimes feel stung with the cost of hotel rooms for one person coupled with the relatively cold hotel atmosphere. But this was just what I wanted: a clean, affordable place to stay in an easily accessible area with enough community features to make me feel like I wasn’t isolated from others. And this hostel delivered on all those things. Of course, a lot of that atmosphere comes from fellow hostel travelers themselves who are generally some of the nicest people you’ll meet. But the hostel itself plays a big part in fostering that atmosphere. The accommodations and bathrooms are very clean. There are numerous common areas catering to just about whatever ambience you’d want, including cafe areas, lounges, a game room, and outdoor courtyard. Overall great value for a very enriching experience.
The reason why I give 5 stars is because the place is very clean and the Staffs are wonderful. Im at this place only on Sundays because its my place of worship! The Hostel is a hotel and my Church is renting the room for this specific reason. I can only speak about the time Im there for worship! Like I said the Staffs at the Hostel are wonderful!
Bedrooms were clean but were a bit hot at night. Everyone was friendly but people mainly kept to themselves. The cafe downstairs was nice and really practical. The hostel is FAR from downtown so if you Uber back after a night out it’s almost better to just stay downtown.
In the first room, another woman started yelling at me as soon as I walked in. She managed to have a private room for 10 all for herself. In the next room, the other girls were loud and entered at about 3 am with loud conversations in early morning. In my next stay the roommate wasn’t disruptive. It was clean enough. I would recommend it for short hostel stays. Some of the receptionists are very rude. Another review mentioned the Hispanic male receptionist was rude but I found that he and the other Hispanic receptionists were polite and even waived the daily membership fee for me but instead the receptionist Mark was very rude when he couldn’t find my reservation since it was already checked in by the previous receptionist. When I asked him why a reservation would be checked in with a room already assigned to me without notifying me and when I asked for the manager’s contact to ask about annual memberships since I had been paying the daily membership fees and would soon be paying more than the total cost for an annual membership, but I couldn’t pay the annual membership in the beginning since they do not accept cash and only accept online card payments, he wouldn’t answer either.Since my university has been stalking and harassing me since I’ve been seeming to transfer out of UC Berkeley, the housekeepers would repeatedly target me to check out before the check out time when there were many other people who didn’t check out yet. Although the hostel staff are generally pleasant, this harassment from my university and other stalkers knocked off another star.I recommend avoiding Mark. In the third time I checked in with him, he wouldn’t activate my room key and I had to go up and back down to the front desk twice before I asked the head manager instead to activate a room key.
I had a great time visiting New York City and staying at the Hi Hostel. They have a laundromat and a big kitchen with an oven and stove for cooking. David P checked me in and was very informative of different restaurants in the area. The hostel is very clean and affordable.
This is one of the rare occasions I leave a review - I only ever write reviews when something is terribly wrong or super awesome. Jonathan from the front desk belongs to the latter.Jonathan has been nothing short of awesome - he was super helpful multiple times and constantly courteous throughout.Keep up the good work and thanks again for a wonderful stay!
Cleaning really bad, I could see stinks on the floor and the bathroom was always dirty, even at 5 am when I went showering I saw a lot of hairs in the sink, for sure that it was not cleaned properly. I think in a hostel where everyone has their own schedule, you should be more careful about the cleaning. Also the bed was not very comfortable and there was no curtain for privacy for example. Also, the elevator takes sooo loony to arrive cause there’s only one for all the building! Apart from that, I needed to pay 4 dollars tax for each night, which was not included in the booking and not writing anywhere when I booked. I will not repeat and not recommend the place to anyone.
Good Staff and Good Structure, also good cleaness. On the other hand, it is impossible to sleep in room 412 because of the door. Everytime someone get in/out of the room, the door makes a strong bang and everybody gates awake. Thats why I would not back and not suggest this place.
What a whirlwind of a stay. This didn’t feel like a traditional hostel.First I was met with a long line to check in. Nobody was very friendly in line and felt like no one was there for travel. Then the ambulance was there for a questionable guest. My personal belongings were thrown twice from my bed and locker onto the floor by new people coming to 8-person room. They also don’t tell you this is right near a public housing project. You will also be met with 13 year old to 60 plus in the same bathroom. Why is there not an age cap on who is able to stay?
First of all, it’s affordable place in NY.1. The place is clean2. It has wide kitchen, two fridges and alot of stoves.3. The dining room is not wide enough, but you can still have your meal outside in the garden. Theres enough tables too.4. There’s a wide living room5. It has locker, so after checking out you can still put your luggages here. Only pay 5 dolar for the big one, enough for two big luggages.6. There’s ATM mechine inside the hostel7. It has self service laundryWhat i dont like is only the blanket. The blanket is only suitable for the summer. But at fall, it’s still felt cold. I even asked for two blankets to make me feel comfortable4.
Really nice hostel- in a solid area of the city when it comes to getting around & seeing the sights, the staff are always willing to give you any info you ask for, and the hygiene standard was great. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to make a trip out to nyc
Called in one night before and wanted to cancel my last nights stay and asked if could get a refund on the last night. Asked if i would need to get in the same day. Got the answer that i didnt need. Came there to check out the day after and then i got told it was to late.
Kind and helpful staff. Room and bathrooms were okay.Beds are a little loud. Wouldnt hurt to fix that. Were told mask wearing is mandatory in all areas. But it was only enforced by the people at the desk. Over 90% were not wearing a mask while in social areas.Overall a good stay, thanks!
If youre a newbie to the planet, this place should be great for you. It seems to be well kept and a very quiet large building in a nice area. Theres a little Bodega across the street and has one of the best Chinese restaurant also across the street 😋If youve looking for privacy this hostel is not for you. The beds are thin and not comfortable if youre staying over 1 night. The bathrooms are very spacious and kept clean. Overall I stayed for for 1 night, and it wasnt bad at all. Would I stay there again? No...I need privacy my own bathroom and a nice queen size bed to sleep in peace.
Goof experience almost all. I was a bit apprehensive about staying in a hostel at first but ended up enjoying it so much I extended from staying 3 days to almost one week. The property was fun and met lots of great people. The staff was nice at the front made my stay especially pleasant, from helping me with my many stay extensions to helping fix the AC in room when it seemed to go out.I would definitely go back
Ive stayed at this hostel couple of times now and it was all good till this years stay. Unfortunately, I got bitten by bed bugs and have complained & showed proof of it to the front office, but it seems like they couldnt care less. Not only theyve not offered any solutions, theyve kept refusing its bed bug bites all over my body and said it couldve been some kind of allergies. Will never recommend staying at this place, please stay away from it for your own safety.
Im so sorry but this time the hostel was very very very dirty, I went there 2 years ago and everything was absolutely beautiful and good atmosphere this is why I came back, but everybody now looks old and dark, they dont put water one day, and theres only one bathroom for floor so you have to do a huge line and super dirty! Im so sorry for my review, but I think is very expensive for this quality... The location is good and the subway is only 2 blocks
For the price of $53 and location, this is a great deal. Make sure to schedule directly through their website because any secondary booking site is going to jack the price up. The beds arent super comfortable but it was very well heated and clean. For the price you really cant find anything better!
Can’t get in touch with the hostel after calling for days, so unfortunately I have to leave this message here. I left a bag, can’t communicate with anyone from the hostel, to make sure My bag is safe. Nobody ever answers the phone and I didn’t get a reply by sending a message from the website.EDIT:Took a week for someone to answer the phone! Bag is gone now of course. Do NOT leave anything here, you will not get it back.
Cant beat the value of this stay. Make sure to call them for the best rates since all those online booking websites charge more. As for the stay, its located right off the 103rd train station making it super easy to mobilize, which youll be doing plenty of if youre in the city for the nightlife. After a long day out you can unwind using any of the many amenities the hostel provides - it was very clean, very aesthetic, and an overall pleasant ambience.
Awesome hostel, the lobby is nice to chill in. Both the bedroom as well as the bathroom were clean. They were also super helpful, especially Patrick! The lockers on the room are pretty big and even fit a big suitcase (like the ones allowed from airlines). They also have lockers that can be used after checkout.
Booked this hostel on the wrong night by accident and sent them an email. No response was heard from them and when I called to speak to the representative he told me that there was nothing that could be done and that unfortunately my reservation amount could not be refunded even though I sent them an email and called minutes after booking. Awful customer service!
Clean, coffee shop is a good place to stay, staff are goof and honest i left my watch in kitchen for almost 4 hours and i got it back from front desk, has a theatre to stay if you want more quite place, kitchen is complete for cooking and heating foods with free plastic spoon and fork with salt and pepperThe only problem is elevator service took do long to wait, no comfort room in a lobby and TV in theatre is out of order
I had the best experience at this hotel. I made a lot of amazing friends. There is a very large guest areas available to socialize in. Very huge and a beautiful historic building. All very clean and bright. I really enjoyed the patio area, amazing area to socialize in, in the summer. I would like to say I big thank you to David P, who really made my stay the best. Such a welcoming front desk staff greeted with a wonderful and a real new yorker. He was very helpful and added to the essensce he is such a brilliant character. If you visit make sure to say hi!! anyway would recommend and I will be back!
Im traveling to New York for the first time and Ive stayed at a few other locations of this brand. Ive now tried for 3 hours at all extensions to get a human being on the phone to answer two questions. Im unable to get anyone to answer the phone so unfortunately will have to book at a different place. This location was ideal to what we wanted to do but we just dont understand why you cant get anyone on the phone to answer a simple question like check in and check out time.
I arrived at almost 3am, I was tired and I didnt have any place to sleep. Fortunately, they had a space for me. This was my first time in a hostel. The staff were wonderful and they even speak Spanish. They were amazing, always smiling and resolving my doubts.I just think that check in was a very large process, maybe you can reduce the amount of time of check in. Besides this, the place was a 10 out of 10Cleaning ✓Bed ✓Bathroom and shower ✓Location ✓Comfort✓Internet✓Price-quality ✓ATM ✓My favorite spot was the patio. It was huge! The lounge zone was very nice too.Pd. Theres a Papa Johns just right in front of the hostel. A nice option if youre a hungry traveller.
Everything is nice. All the staffs were friendly ❤️There r so many activities for people to join. The elevator is relatively slow, but it’s ok for me.The lockers downstairs are huge (cost $5 per day). I can put my 29’ luggage in it(there r different sizes)The restroom is good. They provide shower gel. U don’t need to bring it yourself. The room is relative humidity, and the air conditioner is noisy. I’m not fond of it at all.But I will still give it five stars❤️🤗
Since when did the hostel become like this? No events are being hosted. The whole hostel is just quiet. I have been traveled the world and stayed with a lot of hostels. Never had this kind of experience. The whole hostel is run like a no-customer service hotel, with no restroom in the lobby or kitchen. You need to pay extra 18$ member fee or 4$ per day additional. If u need left luggage in the hotel, there are other 5$ fees (2$ fee for atm, plus ur bank fee( mine is 2.5$) )I have never used the kitchen because its just dirty. Not recommended. Its all about money, no hostel culture at all.
Your experience may vary for your stay depending when you stay and who you are.My first night was great with one roommate who was very considerate about my “early” (11pm) sleeping habits. My second night was not as great when I got two more roommates who barged in talking and then got stuff out of their luggage when I tried to sleep around midnight. I spent the new few minutes trying to find another place to stay until I gave in, went to the front desk, and talked to Patrick who kindly moved me to a new room where I peacefully enjoyed my stay for remaining day.On another note, the neighborhood felt safe to walk in and it’s super close to the 103rd subway. It feels sketchy at first, especially if you’re a solo female traveler but really nothings going to bother ya. I had no issues walking at night in this area. All in all, I can recommend this hostel to stay but a word of warning if you like your peace and quiet after 10pm choose another place to stay.
I booked a bed for myself, but I couldnt come so I emailed the hostel, and received their confirmation. Later, I was still charged for the booking. They explained that I booked 2 times. They gave me the 2 confirmation numbers which were different from the number I received. I emailed and explained to the hostel and no one solved the problem. They ignored it. I have found there are some people have the problem like me. At first, I think it could be a mistake, but since they ignore my email, I will assure that they dont care for the customer. You should be careful when booking with this hostel.
Amazing experience all around! With Covid I had a massive room all to myself in a great spot. The 1, 2, 3, C, and D trains are all just a short walk away. The bathrooms were cleaned multiple times throughout the day, and were always so clean. The staff is incredibly friendly and made me feel right at home. First experience at a hostel was a wonderful one. I will certainly be back!
I stayed here about 4 weeks ago with my friend and was my first time in NYC and in a hostel. I was very happy i had a lot space in my room. I had a great time we both really loved the hostel vibe and nyc. David P was great loved his energy was so cute. and the cleaning staff so cute too. overall really cute
First it all, although the location is convenient to the subway station, it is in a very dangerous area and there is no warning about this whatsoever. My friend and I were catcalled and approached multiple times on the walk between the subway and the hostel. Check in was fine except we weren’t given any instruction on where to get linens, where to go, etc. When we arrived to our room, there was someone sleeping in my friend’s bed, causing us to have to sleep in other beds in the room. We were not provided linens, until waiting in line and asking, rather than them being in the bag on the bed in the room as advertised. They also do not provide locks for lockers, and they are absolutely filthy inside anyway. The floors in the rooms were sticky and disgusting and the walls are paper thin so you will hear absolutely everything outside and inside all night. There was only one shower and bathroom room open for our entire floor of women and it was relatively clean but I imagine not very sanitary as I never saw anyone sanitizing it even with the pandemic still happening. The vending machines were out of water and there is no other option to get water in the hostel, not ideal for July. The worst part overall is that this place is so clearly not following covid guidelines, and will stack you completely full in a room of strangers despite the pandemic. For the price, go somewhere else. This place is gross.
Despite a few minor shortcomings, this is the best hostel I’ve stayed at. I think this is my second or third visit as a solo traveler and I feel safe here. They have USB chargers at each bunk AND inside each locker so you can leave the room while your phone is plugged in. Bathrooms and showers are always spotless. Towels are provided. There was actually body wash in the dispensers… they’re always empty at every other place I’ve stayed. All of the staff were wearing face masks even though COVID restrictions have been relaxed. Internet speeds are decent and there are some picnic tables outside that make a good work space. My biggest complaint is that there was zero air circulation in the room. When there are 12 guys staying in an enclosed space, it can get musty fast.
Super super clean friendly friendly people on staff and in the hostel itself. Shared bathrooms are cleaner then many 5 stars, and they stay that way throughout the day eye systematic cleaning. Really awesome experience, truly 10 out of 5 but my spoiled butt is chaffed cause the free pool table is closed. Dont let that slow you down from booking because the place is a cherry, think I went on a 5 for 5 left hotel and lost key run and they stay couldnt have been friendlier about it. Super folks. From one host of hosts to these Let me know if I can do something for you sometime because the staff makes one feel as if they are home. Best. christopher Howard SSS.
I stayed here back in 2019 and enjoyed my stay. Had a nice room, good facilities, simple-okay breakfast, and super convenient with the metro. And that’s the most important thing honestly. The metro connection was really nearby, making it really easy to quickly go downtown.
So, the bad first. The staff are friendly. BUT, they are woefully understaffed. Which means youll wait a looong time for everything. The elevator takes forever. One of the showers was only cold. It never got hot.The good: the location is the best thing going for it. There is a subway stop a block away at Broadway. The 1 takes you right up and down the city and connects to Times Square and all of its connections. It is pretty close to Central Park and another sub line at 103rd & CPW.The facilities are clean and comfortable. There is a nice little cafe, lots of lounging space, and a very nice courtyard.
Perhaps, because of covid, this poor property just seemed a bit run down. From the very beginning when I couldnt ever reach the hostel itself, to being handed one towel when I got there, I thought it really needed some proper management. I wonder if HI in Boston knew if they would approve. The location is great for getting around, but is on the edgier side of the Columbia university scene....dodgy actually. It is also the dirtier side of the neighborhood, I noticed from walking in the area for bus/subway trips, etc.. It would be wonderful to see the place refurbished and attended to. Hopefully management will improve the running of it, and then I might consider staying there again.
Not very good. 45-minute wait at front desk AFTER midnight to extend for a Wednesday night. Price jumped inexplicably to $80 from $54 the day before. Bunk bed in 10-person room (at least they remembered my preference for a lower bunk when I checked in -- THREE weeks earlier). AV remote (only TV is in basement) always missing. Despite my reiew a couple of years ago, no longer recommended. In fact, avoid. There are other hostels, and this place costs as much as a cheap hotel, where you dont have nine roomates (at least they were quiet).
David P. AND MARK ARE VERY GOOD ABOUT EXPLAINING WHAT IS THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND HOW EXCELLENT THE PEOPLE WHO WORK HERE.THIS IS THE BEST HOSTEL IN THE NEW YORK CITY. EASY ACCESS TO THE SUBWAY TRAIN STATION AND CITY BUSS RIGHT OUTSIDE OF THE HOSTEL. Many restaurants are very close in walking distance and Whole foods is close by and there are plenty of places like Central Park and museums nearby for enjoyment while you are here to.
Great location, its very close to the subway and easy to get to from LGA. All the staff members were super friendly. David P was very helpful and helped me extend my stay when I wasnt ready to leave NYC yet. The rooms were comfy and clean I would definitely stay here again.
I enjoyed my stay with Hi Hostel as convenient location, Deli stores, restaurants, very close to the subway.Cheap & affordable price, they follow Covid protocols by keeping rooms sanitized. All the staff members were super friendly. There was 1 person available in helpdesk. They didnt had coffee, complimentary breakfast available.
Good place for the price. Clean, near to several museums, central park. Just one block away from a metro station and bikes for rental just around the corner. The cons: very hot during summer, the AC was not always on during most of the night, and the lack of visual signals to guide you through the place.
As a member, This is not helping travelers save money after Covid. Going out every day to eat is too expensive, There were no water Fountains working other than the 4th floor and that was so warm. when we have a heatwave for 6 days, Not worth spending time there. personal Audio device items were taken by staff when I was finished with a meeting and step out for only an hour. The front-desk staff had tried to blame it on the last dorm mate in bed C and that isnt the case here. The Guest checks out at 9:45 am and my meeting was from 10:30 to 12:30 pm at this time checkout is completed and the other roommate doesnt even speak French, Japanese, or English. He also helps me look for it because going to the staff once more to complaint.I was more shocked than you are reading this review. Now, in my professional optional, there was really only two staff member I like to talk to, It was Patrick and the Other Guy with the blad clean shave head. Those guys were understanding and nice but when I talked to others its a lack of communication there was a Korean woman checking in and her English isnt that good either and my Korean isnt the best but I translated for her. The main reason why I am giving this review 3 stars. The problem was not enforcing the Covid-19 rules, Kitchen was always a mess when I was in or trying to pre-ready some ramen. since we were only allowed to use the microwave One guest asked me if I work here when I told her and I quote we suppose to clean behind ourselves and clean the area you are using for the next person, this is a community. Her response was do you work here again, and my response was and quote As a member of HI for now over 9 years, I think its my duty to help people understand what HIUSA is about. This is not a shelter, you do not wait for others to clean your mess. Look at the walls please and you can see staff place notes everywhere. She again takes notice and didnt even apologize for her attitude. People do not read, Yes, I got food poisoning while I was there because I either didnt clean the microwave or I touch something in the kitchen that wasnt clean. WASH YOUR HANDS ALL THE TIMENo dorm mates were in the room at the time and check out. I am so disappointed. HI staff, check-in someone after 2 am making so much noise for 3 hours until 5 am. You may want to think twice about staying here. The mens 4th-floor bathroom was so nasty at times, makes me question where are these folks coming from with such nasty matters. Some guests also thought it was not fair enough to charge us full price when we are always eating out and spending money that can also go to more hostel stays. The summer heat was too much in Staircase B, it was a natural hot spring, LOL I had notable to get my work done so I purchase a table and was giving a chair to use in the dorm room. Sorry, but these cafe tables cant be ideal for someone a Photographer or video editor, plus I need the silence when editing audio. So yes the Hostel cost me more money than the stay. I went to the ER room on Columbia in 113th and my bill, SMHBut wait, there is more, someone went into my food bag, and cook ramen noodles in a pack and drank my $40 sake bottle what was left of it and I think I know who it was. Some old weird guys that I caught smoking in staircase A out of the windows on the first floor. He was going into the Kitchen touching other peoples food and belongings. This is why staff have to pay more attention to who stays in the hostel.
They peddle a membership fee when you try to check in that is not mentioned when you reserve. The front desk crew is pretty bad at their jobs as it took entirely too long to check in. It likes to boast its nonprofit status, but from the look of the place, thats so it wont have to pay a fair share of taxes. NY Moore Hostel may be a little out of the way, but so far, its way better then this one.
My stay at HI Hostel has been great, I’ve booked a bed in female premium dorm and was quite satisfied with the privacy for which it allowed. Another pleasant surprise were the breakfasts, which were great and can be tailored to any taste. They also have a lot of extra experiences such as comedy nights and tours offered everyday, there is even yoga every morning at 8. Overall, very clean property with great staff. Recommend staying here as it’s great value for money.
I really enjoyed my stay at the HI New York Hostel. I was there for a period of 2 weeks. I wasnt even sure of my exact dates of checking out and Patrick at the reception was very understanding of my situation and was flexible enough to add and subtract the dates of stay. Additionally, due to COVID, all the rooms had just one person, so I was the only one in a room meant for 6 people. All the sheets and pillow cases and towels were fresh and clean. I could request for towels anytime and was gladly given one. There are very small downsides that are with this hostel; one being the bathroom outside of my room (in my case) which meant that I had to mask up everytime I stepped out of my room even for a quick visit to the bathroom. But apart from that, the hostel staff was very friendly, the whole place was very neat and clean and pretty much better what you would expect in a hostel.
Clean and accommodating. Great locale. The patio/courtyard was fabulous at night with a hammock and string lights. Very peaceful and quite. The cafe was super busy in the am, but they had a variety of options and the coffee was good. We stayed in an 8 person room and didn’t have any problems. Beds weren’t bad and linens were provided and cleanliness wasn’t a concern. Free WiFi. The shower stalls were roomy and provided space to change clothes allowing for extra privacy. They provided shower shoes which was a great bonus if you forgot to pack yours. Take the stairs - the elevators are ridiculously slow. Great overall experience.
I visited the USA in February and I stayed in this hostel twice (one night in a four bed room and a week later in a six bed room for two nights), as well as in two other HI hostels, in Washington DC and in Santa Monica. I’m mostly positive about HI New York and in comparison with the other hostels I would put it on the 2nd place. In summation, everything is basic but sufficient and the price is sharp for its location. The hygiene of the hostel was good, the sleeping rooms that I stayed in and shared spaces throughout the hostel were all clean. The rooms were furbished basic but complete and the building itself is well maintained. In the four bed room the beds had curtains which offered a little more privacy. A downside of this room was that it was located next to a road and the isolation was limited so it was a little noisy. The six bed room didn’t have that problem and fortunately the other guests were well mannered so I didn’t have issues with them. The hostel is nicely located in a more quiet area of Manhattan that is nonetheless close to some of the cities main attractions such as the central park and times square. There is also a subway station nearby, on approximately a 3 minute walking distance.Breakfast was included and it was okay, I had a cup of coffee (a large cup of watery coffee, which Americans apparently like because all coffee I had in the USA was like that, but frankly I’m not a fan) a bagel (which was a bit dry), and an apple.I noticed that many visitors are individual travelers, mostly young people, that are visiting for different reasons and are often happy to talk to you. I didn’t have real issues with any guests although there were some drunk asians screaming in the hallway around 4am when I went to the bathroom, which was a little annoying.Outstanding was the tour to Chinatown, little Italy and some other parts of lower Manhattan organized by the hostel. The guide was knowledgeable and a skillful talker, and his story made me aware of the often fascinating history and meaning of places that I had otherwise never noticed.
I stayed in the four bed dorm with two of my sisters and one of our friends, and we had a great time! The hostel is VERY clean and well run. The breakfast is good, and the staff is so friendly and they really know what theyre doing. I never had to wait for a bathroom, and we were there labor day weekend when the city was jam-packed. We didnt hear any excessive noise, and we slept really well. I would definitely stay again!
A very large historic and well maintained building in Manhattans Upper West Side.Wonderful staff ( David L, David P, Patrick, Manny, Isabel etc.) Due to the pandemic, I didnt get to utilize all of the spaces normally available but I can imagine how fun and enjoyable theyd have been.
Its a great hostel. The location is great, closer to the metro but also a walking distance from central park. The staff is great, the cafe people are great and the food is good for the price. They have all sorts of activities and I can recommend the walking tours especially the one that takes you to the lower east side the tour guide, Phill, was great! The place is clean, the bed was comfortable.Excellent stay for a budget travel
Its a good hostel cheap for New York. Really close to the metro and central park. I stayed in female dorm room for privacy reasons and was perfect for me. Locks in the room you can bring your own or buy from the front desk. Breakfast was Included in my stay good variety of choices. The bathroom was clean also have laundry room to wash, dry and iron your stuff.
I really truly love this hotel! Their front desk was super friendly and enthusiastic! Their interior design felt very welcome and great vibe. Every morning they have a good breakfast menu you can eat and drink before you begin your adventure. I do like their room they provide because you can pick either coed or single gender. Plus the room have 4,6.8,10, or 12 people. Of course the fewer the people the more money to pay compare to tons of people. I’m absolutely glad they offer a locker for your stuff to be storage. You need to remember to bring your own TOWER and a small lock to lock your locker (or buy it from them). The locker will only fit for Carry-on suitcase. Hi New York offer some small activity at night time so you can have fun and meet people from all over the world. Other activities to do is pool table, watch tv downstairs and use computer. You will need to pay for computer and make sure you bring CASH. They do offer s Subway Map. I truly love this place and will come back if I ever visit NY again!
Great hostel, not to expensive and located right next to central park. The subway station is also around the corner, so the location is great. The hostel itself is clean and the staff is friendly. There are big lockers for your luggage available; and small lockers in the rooms. The breakfast that you can get here is also decent.I definitely recommend this place.
This hostel was quite nice. Because of covid, the common areas and food counter were closed, and there were no activities, but it was good for a place to stay on the Upper West Side. Very close to the 1 train.Things to note: You cant bring local friends into the hostel, probably for security reasons. The door is not the obvious front door on the front center of the building, but to the right, by the neon H. Bring a lock for a locker.
This hostel has good beds and a very good breakfast with a wide selection. It is not unlimited but that probably is not necessary. The kitchen is huge and there is a large outdoor patio and a TV lounge. They organise lots of activities for guests to take part in which is nice.
Best safe and affordable option for solo traveller in NYC.Plenty of activities on offer.Clean shower n toilet.Though i shared my room with 7 other ladies i still felt i have my own space. People are very respectful n considerate.Bring your own padlock for locker provided in the roomTowels provided which is awesome!
Awesome experience. Very clean facility and rooms. The bunk beds were typical, but your personal space was sufficient and there are good lockers. They have social hours in the lobby and plenty of organized adventures to get a view of NYC from the locals perspective. And the cafe downstairs is pretty amazing and being that its right in the city, it is very economical to get your morning fill up and grab some waters and snacks for the day
Amazing hostel! I stayed 7 days in NYC and that place had become a sort of home. The building has plenty of space inside and outside. Perfectly organized with the kitchen and the bathrooms. Also at least 3 or 4 more common areas. Including a pool table room and a cinema room with the big TV and all couches. They organize a lot of events which I havent been part of unfortunately. Everything is new and perfectly clean. They provide you with a bath towel and theres no time limit on the showers (although it would be nice not to waste water).Very nice garden which I couldnt enjoy as it was winter and snowing but Ive seen a BBQ other than all the picnic tables.Inside theres a cafeteria that makes AMAZING pastries. Muffins, cinnamon swirl, cupcakes, pancakes, you name it.. And a lot of more not expensive stuff for lunch you can pack for your exploring journeys. Health choices and less health choices. If I have to find a flaw thats the beds, mattresses and pillows not a great quality (although according to my fitbit I aint slept that good in a long time), and the breakfast not included. Not because of the breakfast itself but because its a moment for the guests to socialize. Without a specific time for them to be altogether in the same place people tend to spread up. And so it becomes harder to know new people, which is what I love the most about hostels.Besides that, highly recommended. Few minutes from the subway, few more minutes from another line, and I guess less than 10 from Central Park.
Great and economic lively place in heart of New York! Staff was very nice and helpful. Escalator was very slow though! Air condition was old style but manageable. Huge groups of students were there all the time for traveling in groups. Comedy shows are organized once a week and lots of stuff to do!
Great location, close to Central Park and the subway. A lot of good communal spaces to hang out and meet fellow travelers. It was a nice clean room, I was right by the AC so that helped. There were events organized by the staff as well. There was always a long line to talk to the reception staff however.
Rooms and bathrooms are clean. Each bunk bed has a curtain, a reading light and sockets for charging phones etc. The bathroom has free soap and hair drier. Nice neighborhood and near the subway station. The cafe downstairs makes the best sandwiches. Wonderful staff too! Would definitely book this place again.
I genuinely loved this place. My brother and I got to meet David who worked at the front desk , he really helped us out & it was a pleasure meeting him. We were on the second floor where there was a balcony / lounge area right outside our window , so we could see the decorative lights from outside which was comforting. We had all access for ourselves there due to covid & didn’t run into anyone in the bathrooms either .
Bathrooms in excellent conditions.Location nearby red line, literally a block.Personal was kind and helpful, you can exchange money.Dorms were clean ( 10 man ).Maybe a little noisy at night but thats common in those places.Good bar and a nice chill room.Secure lockers work perfectly.
First time in NYC and first time staying in this hostel and I met so many friends yesterday!!! The volunteer staff had a welcome party, then we went to pub crawl where I met more friends. Breakfast is not free, but its very affordable for international travelers. I recommend you guys get a 7 days unlimited ride and split and share the cost with someone. If youre solo traveling, I recommend you book the 10 room so you can meet more people
I’ve stayed in several others hostels in Manhattan and I think this is absolutely the best. Excellent location. Subway line 1 is just one block away, 2 min walk. You can get to the Times Square in around 25 minutes. Many nice restaurants and a fruit shop nearby. They also have many activities including cooking lessons, although I wonder who come to New York City to spend 5 hours on how to make cookies. But they also have tours and bar crawls.10 people or 12 people rooms may be stuffen in the evenings but that is unavoidable. 4 or 6 people rooms are excellent because they have curtains around the beds. They have a cafe which is quite convenient. The food there are all huge in quantity so you are guaranteed for a full stomach.I found that bathrooms on the first floor are cleaner than those on the other floors.
I really liked staying here! Ive stayed in several NYC hostels and this is my favorite one. It is beautiful on the inside, so many common rooms, a huge kitchen, a very huge dining area, bathrooms are clean, shower is hot, and lockers are offered. There is a cafe in the lobby that offers hot food, cold subs, coffee & tea, and so many mouthwatering desserts. The only thing I didnt like was they downgraded me from a 4 bed to an 8 bed, but didnt change the price (or give a refund). The first night I was alone, which is why they can keep 5 stars.
It is easy access. Many double bed per bedroom. Both gendles sleep In the same bedroom. They have a huge kitchen, they have refrigerator, it is nice place and familiar. It is beautiful. It is near placer that you could buy ready food or could buy things to make yourself. It is cheaper and good place to spend night.
Very well balanced hostel. Not a party hostel but they do free pub crawls twice a week and a hostel party once per week. The rooms were nice and the location of the building was nice as well, right next to multiple places to eat and the subway station for transport. Staff were nice, and the cafe in the first floor was solid.
So Ill preface this with the fact that Ive never stayed in a hostel before anywhere. It was a great experience, even with the annoying things that happened. (Someone else took my bunk and then they ended up forgetting to change the sheets.) Its in a great location, very affordable, and the staff are excellent. There was never an issue of not having a shower available or anything like that.Lovely experience overall.
The hostel was very nice. Easy to check into and well organized. The rooms were great, each person gets a bed, light and charger in the bed, and locker. They were very clean along with the communal bathrooms on the floor. The location was great, a couple blocks from the 103rd subway station.
I had never stayed in Hostel but I was traveling alone and thought in would be great way to meet people. It was one of the best vacations Ive ever had! The entire staff was so helpful and friendly. My roommates were equally fabulous. Such an amazing experience! I recommend that everyone stays in Hostel at least once! Ive already booked a room in my next location, Paris!
I stayed at this Hostel in November of 2014. It was my first time in NYC and I really did not want to spend a ton of money on a hotel, I just needed a bed at night to sleep and a shower. This hostel had the best reviews so I booked it for 4 nights. Total came out to around $200 compared to $700 for a regular hotel in the same area. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful at check in. I was pleased to see that the place is huge and not small and crammed. Met so many people from around the world in my room and also in the dining area. The rooms were clean, lockers were big. You have to provide your own lock for the locker. Also, you must sign up for membership with hostelling international when you arrive, but its cheap. Over all, this place met all my needs as a solo traveler looking to save money on lodging and focus more on experiencing the city. I highly recommend. Next time I visit NYC, I will book this place again.
It was a great experience staying here. Everyone ranges from 17-25ish and they are really polite and accommodating. Only downside was housekeeping. I was in a rush to check out as check out is at 11am and the cleaning staff were in the lift and told me sorry you have to wait I had to carry 25KG of luggage down 4 storeys and nearly got charged for a later checkout. Other than that everything else was brilliant.
Stayed in a multi bunk male dorm style room. Very reasonable for the price. Bring a lock to keep your belongings in the locker provided. Bathrooms are shared on a by floor basis. If you just need a place to crash at the end of the day this is a great option in the city. Location is great and staff are friendly.
The place is great! It has a young style, is well decorated, has a large kitchen, a coffee shop, laundry machines, lockers for your luggage and places to meet new people. It is not expensive. Each bed has its ilumination and power plugs. It is far from the touristic places, so you need to spend some time on the subway everyday. I couldnt figure out how the showers work by myself.
I simply love this hostel I have stayed here a couple of times, now with the quarentine is a plus a whole bedroom to one self, but missing the hostel spirt n sharing in all the special places they have.. The only recomendation was that I had men going into the womens bathroom it it was because from one Day to another they had change the signs and it wasnt very visible, so very unpleasant this situation which happened 3 times During my stay. The guys had been using that one because it was for men before I arrived after i arrived they changed it, so the guys were used to it.. But the rest.. I Will continue staying here. Missing the life the hostel used to have. 😔
The facilities are great. Staff were really friendly and helpful with lots of information available about anything you might want to do. I got a cream cheese bagel every day it was delicious and really good value considering it was free. I personally will be returning to this hostel though, as they offer tours everyday and you generally get a good if unspectacular experience with HI.
Beds are clean, mattresses somehow ok. Considering its a hostel I guess I should say its fine. But I slept 3 nights and my back is killing me. The aircon is terrible loud and direct next to my bunk bed.The showers are for my understanding not really clean when I look in the corners. Someone killed a mosquito in the shower on day one ... Its still there. The smell in the rooms and the corridors are also a bit on the downside.Receptionist were still kind of friendly but they need more staff. I waited almost an hour for check in. Not there fault but if management reads this, give them a bonus they do work hard and still stay friendly but their tiredness is recognizable. The common areas are widely open, clean and inviting. Theres also a pattio which is inviting to sit and chill.Very friendly neighborhood and well connected.Overall its ok considering I paid something like 35 euro per night. But for sure it wasnt a good enough experience to let me return.
Big, busy hostel with a positive, social vibe. The beds are comfortable enough, and the restrooms are kept pretty clean. My dorm room had a sanitation issue that wasnt addressed for several hours; but to be fair, I didnt bring the issue to the attention of the staff, assuming it was already noticed in a clean room. I was disappointed that NO breakfast was included, when most (all?) other HI hostels include at least simple breakfast foods.
You are planning to explore NYC on your own? This is your place to stay! I promis you will have a city exploration crew after just one day or night in this hostel! They offer a lot of activites and during summer there is nothing better than the barbecue parties in the hostels backyard garden!
The building is old, and it shows its age. The rooms are small. Many windows arent closing properly so the noise at night is amazingly loud sometimes (it is like sleeping with open windows). They repainted the stairs and doors when we where there and everything stayed sticky to the feel. Its like the paint would not dry. Rooms and hallways smell very humid and not fresh. The air conditioning system was extremely loud and sometimes just too cold. So if we could we would sleep without it being on. Normally the sheets are cleaned after 4 days without asking for it = surprise nothing was changed and we needed to ask for it at the reception to get them changed. Some of the new sheets where not so clean and had hair in them. Showers are mostly OK, but sometimes they lack being cleaned properly. Some are good and others are just stinky. Water pressure is better at the 2nd floor then the 1st floor. Sometimes when the water collector is full the shower is flooding itself and then you need to change clothes in a puddle of water. At the end of our stay many items of other hostel guests where everywhere, shampoo, sponges, towels, socks, underpants, ... I don t understand why you are not taking these things with you?? This hostel is big and when we where there it was full of young scouts, it felt like we where part of a scouts group. I was very pleased with the breakfast in the morning. We payed extra for it, but it was well worth the price. Fresh pancakes, eggs, sausage, muffins, fruit, juice, cornflakes, ... definitely recommend it. The reception makes no problem when asking for a new towel. A person at the reception even scared some loud guests away at night on the terrace that was right next to our room, thanks for that! The hostel also has some free tours, I did the central park and midtown tour and the PUB crawl. They are ok, but not overwhelming... I don t really recommend them. For some you need to pay, maybe they are better... So overall not so impressed with this hostel, they definitely have some work to do if they want a higher score.
I normally stay in hotels in New York City, but the HI hostel was such a pleasant surprise! We loved our stay. It’s super clean and the atmosphere is great. It felt like a nice college experience. We met people from a dozen countries at one of the gatherings downstairs and had so much fun!Why stay in a hotel when you can experience something so unique?
Ive been staying at HI New York City Hostel for two nights. I was very well taken care of by the staffs and I really liked the security and cleanliness of the place. The breakfast was very tasty and made me woke up early every day. My only criticism is about the installations of the hostel. The bed was a little bit uncomfortable and the air conditioning system of the room was irritatingly loudly (hotel room: 431). My conclusion is, in general, was an excellent experience and for sure I recommend this Hostel for your staying in New York
I usually don’t stay in hostels, I thinks is was my second time. But this was a last minute trip and the price look good. The place is very clean and friendly with a lot of common places to really enjoy the time, cook eat and work. They have a great caffe shop. And lot of activities. They just a few block away from Central Park. On Train 1 that almost take you any way and B just a few block away. I will definitely stay here again.
I was in this hostel at the end of July. The bed room smelled like hell. You had the feeling you were breathing in a spoiled salami. The smell in the corridors and in the hall smelled greasy and stale. Apart from a strong air conditioning machine, there was no fresh air. The toilets and showers are hardly cleaned. I watched a cleaner deal with an unappetizing toilet bowl. He simply flushed. He didnt use a cleaning agent or a toilet brush like EVERYONE in his household would. Showering and sleeping was not hygienic at all. I would never go there again. Just because it has its own cafeteria and things look good, the hostel doesnt meet the standards compared to San Francisco, for example. The next time Im in New York, Id rather spend more money on my lodging than going through that hole.
If youre planning to hostel stay in NY then this is the place to stay. Everyone was friendly and approachable, the property itself neat and tidy with clean amenities. There were activities organised by the hostel everyday which were very enjoyable and I met a lot of great people. The cafe which is open very long hours was also a huge hit and had a large array of options!!
What I like is that its located close to the station and some shops and restaurants and the hostel has a variety of facilities like elevators, laundry, kitchen, tv, reading room, etc. What I wish it had was free breakfast and more bathrooms as each level would have a disproportionate number of bathrooms for each gender (2 female, 1 male or 2 male, 1 female). But overall Im pretty happy with the place.
Service attitude of the cleaning staff & willingness to go the extra mile.Disappointed is too strong a word.Room heater didnt work & needed me to bring this to attention of (very friendly) onsite staff, everyday.Rooms are c-c-c-colllllldddd.Mattresses have gone soft.
Very Welcoming, clean bedrooms, clean bathrooms. They have such fun activities planned during the week you can do for fun with the rest of the residents or/and you can study/work in the cafe, outside, in the Theater room, etc! I loved this place and I loved my first experience in New York!
Excellent hostel. Amazing experience, beautiful place. I will certainly return to the same hostel if I visit NYC again. The rooms are clean, also bathrooms and kitchen. The kitchen is giant and amazing. The employees are lovely. The hostel is very well located and they have a good wifi service. 100% recommended.
Its a nice placeI went to NYC last weekend and I was a little worried about a good location and I found this Hostel. I booked a shared female room and the experiences was good!.- Good price.- The beds, sheets, pillow, blanket look and are clean as the bathrooms.- The lockers are next to your bed, looks safe leave your stuff there but I recommend you bring your personal padlock.- Great location (two blocks away from central park and 10 minutes away walking from subway).- The cafeteria has a good menu, fresh products fair price. (I bought a real orange juice! the best choice for a breakfast)- They have a pool table, comfortable couches and the customer service was very kind, attentive and cordial.- The guest are respectful. Thanks guys for made part of my first experience in NYC the best!
I liked the place itself, nice lounge & chill out spots, bathrooms, kitchens and rooms are clean. The guest there though are very stand offish and constantly staring at their phone; in other words, the general social atmosphere is weak. NYC is huge, with lots to do so its kind of mute point, just would have been nice to meet more travelers.
Hi New York City Hostel is an amazing place, located just a minute away from 103 Street subway station. The environment inside and outside the vicinity is very good. Then rooms are clean, beds done, sheets changed and clean always. The stuff is amazing, friendly and ready to help. I would totally recommend them to anyone
I have stayed at this hostel several times over the past few years and I continue to want to stay here. The location is brilliant, being so close to the metro station and within walking distance to Central Park. The hostel rooms are clean albeit need to have a little more air circulation when being cleaned. Basic beds, lockers in each room, personal lights next to each bed.The hostel also has a great cafe to grab a coffee and a bagel at before you start your day of exploring. They also provide a lot of events and entertainment. I have been at the hostel over Halloween, where they threw a party and for Thanksgiving as well where they put on a huge thanksgiving feast for anyone at the hostel wanting to attend.
This is not an European style hostel by any means of the word, but rather a very budget hotel. Very understaffed - no wonder poor administrators dont have any will or energy to even smile, forget about chatting! They are standing behind their desks like robots, constantly helping neverending lines of tourists. Not social. Location is nice. Their cafe is a little bit too pricey for what it is. Maybe selling some beers would help to cheer up the place a little bit.
Located just uptown Manhattan, I loved the atmos6at this place. it is well kept and very clean. staff is friendly and if you book it in advance, you can get a better price. they have a range of rooms from dorms to private. away from the noisy downtown area you can relax here. food offered at the cafe is pretty good too, breakfast sandwiches from $5.50 onwards and many other food items+ beverages. the elevator was out of service on all 3 days out of there which was annoying, and the bed I slept on wasnt comfortable. But its a very spacious lovely space
Good but not perfect location, 2min walk to the underway (and then ~15 min to Times Sq). Helpful staff but still poor service. I had always to wait in a queue to talk with a receptionists. The included breakfast is a lie (it costs 3$), nothing special. Rooms with a lot of noise due to air-condition operation, also quite humid, and no option to open a window. The bathroom was quite clean and well maintained - was a good surprise/experience. Nice US aesthetic in the whole building in general. Over all overpriced option.
It is probably the best hostel were I have ever been. Every bed is equipped with multiple electric plugs as well as the locker. Bathrooms were always clean. It offers a wide variety of events were its easy to meet new people and have a lot of fun. Its not that close to the dowton but the subway is very close to the hostel and can take you everywhere quickly.
This hostel has everything you might need! Its in a really good spot (5min from the subway, 10 minutes walk from Central Park) the room and bathroom were clean and the breakfast included really good. Theyve got a little restaurant, a small cinema screen, lots of common rooms to hang out! Really nice spot. It is incredibly big though! Very crowded at times.
Ya know what? I would have never in a million years though about the option of staying at a hostel. NEVER!! But after the few night saying in NYC. To have a facility better than some hotels that have stars and diamonds for the person just stopping through the city just for a few days open to the world and the people of the world. I met so many people from everywhere and even made some friends along the way . The customer service the facility and the accommodation are great especially for the price you pay in the city .
Nice rooms well insulated, but the heater kept playing up and we had to get someone to come fix it each night, they were quick about it though. Good layout in communal areas and a lot of interesting activities to sign up for.A dry bench with mirror and electrical sockets in bathrooms would be a good idea, as girls taking up the sink space is a little awkward.l when you just want to wash your hands or brush teeth.
Very good hostel at ok prices. Rooms vary seemingly from floor to floor but all are fairly good, each bed came with a light and mains socket next to it along with large lockers.Ours included a basic free breakfast (fresh bagel, fruit and drink) which was a good start to the day.Outside of the rooms, the rest of the hostel is well kept with and they offer a variety of facilities.Location is decent but not amazing, a long walk or shortish tube journey can get you into central Manhattan, with central park just a couple of blocks away.
Best hostel in NYC! I always stay at this place while visiting the city. The position is very convenient-- near Central Park, lots of great restaurants, near metro station, etc. Also, the hostel itself provides lots of fun activities such as Beer night, pizza night, grand tour for the city, bar tour. People stay at this place are also very nice. I made lots of good friends here! The room is clean and cozy too.
Good location. Good kitchen facilities. Rooms a bit cramped and small for 8 people. Front Desk staff member who checked me in did not accommodate my request for a lower bunk, telling me none were available. But when i wemt to my room, there were 2 available. Went back to desk later and spoke to diff staff member and switched to lower bunk with no problems.Great comedy show downstairs in basement theatre room. Location was uptown, but easy subway ride to all big attractions
Very big establishment. It was well organized, staff were very friendly and accommodating to all our needs. Facilities are clean and comfortable. The area is within walking distance to central park and the riverside. A lot of common areas and events for the guests. Definitely one of the better hostels Ive been to.
The receptionist was nice and had no trouble checking in but If you’re looking for relaxation, this is not it.. People come in the room and turn on lights in middle of night making noise and have no consideration for others. The bathroom is not in room and it is located in hallway on other side shared with everyone on the floor. There’s only two showers and two stalls. People constantly using it and there’s no privacy obviously it is a hostel but it’s not worth the price. It is far from main locations like Times Square, mid town, port authority etc... The lobby is full all of the time... a lot of people in big groups traveling with schools etc... If you really want to stay at a hostel to save some money I recommend the JAZZ HOSTEL on Colombus which is about the same price and it’s is crentrally located in the city close to everything like restaurants, bars ,24hour shops, Times Square etc... It also includes free breakfast.,, it is never crowded and there is some privacy. You can lounge without having to be bother.. people seem more considerate and there are bathrooms inside of rooms. It might be a little more in terms of price but it is extremely worth it compared to this hostel and others in town... overall I must say this is okay compared to explore hostel in Jersey who has bedbugs. Thankfully there’s no bed bugs in his location and it can work if you’re on a tight budget.....
Simply an amazing experience if youre looking for getting to know people from all over the world and having a good time. The hostel always has days activities such as guided tours (which some of them are free), mini shows, talks and group organization to go to local pubs and bars. The place, the towel and the sheets are clean. Its next to subways stations.Good point out: bring your lock if you wanna keep your stuff inside the locker.
For a hostel, and certainly for the price, the facilities are clean and the beds are comfortable. That doesnt mean its perfect. But, for example, there were no bugs, and at this price thats amazing for new york.Id stay here again. Its very convenient to the subway, sells adequate food, and the showers have soap canisters in them, with some stocked with Shampoo under the sinks.
Its a great location, right by 103rd and Amsterdam. Its also right by many subway accesses, making it extremely convenient to get downtown in less than 30min. The staff, the facilities and the cleanliness of the facilities is top notch. Always great activities happening during the week
Excellent hostel. Short walk from subway line 1, b and c. Short walk from central park too. Room was clean and tidy. Bathrooms are clean, there is enough of them as well as showers. Beds are behind curtains for privacy, a locker is provided but a lock is not. They are available at reception for $3.27. Communal spaces are nice - both indoors and out. Customer service was nice most of the time, with the occasional moment where it lapsed slightly.
Great place to stay near transport links. The facilities are good, the bagkes were blooming brilliant I could have eaten them all day and the staff helpful. You sort of know what youre getting with a hostel but it wasnt ideal for me to have people coming and going so much
What a wonderful hostel. I considered a few cheaper options around NYC, but ultimately chose here because of 3 factors, its convenient location (1 block from a major subway line); daily programs like city tours and live music; and historic building over 100 years old. I stayed for 13 days in March 2019 in a male 4 dorm and the room and facilities were all extraordinary clean and well kept. I was provided by the hostel a towel, bedding, pillows, and a blanket which they will wash every four days if you want.
This place saved me from a long, cold night when NYC was hit by a snowstorm. The resulting slushocalypse paralyzed the city and every hotel room filled immediately. After hours of seaching for a place to stay, with gridlock everywhere even at midnight, a helpful agent at Booking.com found this place. At 1 AM I was greeted by a friendly face and given a comfortable bunk bed in a 6 bed dorm room, otherwise empty. The bathroom was clean, the place quiet, and in the morning a hearty breakfast was served to an international group of young and middle aged folks from all over the world. Having not stayed in a hostel for 40 years, this was a fun adventure, and inexpensive! Thank you, H.I.!
Great clean hostel... But there was an issue with the dates I was staying. I had to check in, then the next day check out, then check in again after 4pm. Kind of a pain, but they had storage lockers to store your stuff for $5 a day.Other than that, everything was awesome. The tours they offered were amazing and they always had some activity during the night.Overall very good experience.
Great hostel! It is much better than I expected. Bathrooms are clean and big, dorms as well. There is a super duper kitchen with 4 fridges, 6 cookers, microwave ovens, plates and everything you need. There is a restaurant too with nice food at very reasonable prices. And a laundry room! They organise activities - tours, some are for free, parties, comedy nights.... Staff and guests are very friendly too!
Clean, quiet, air conditioning works fine. People are nice and there is enough room for everyone. Especially loved the bunk lights and charging ports, real utility if you consider other cheap options.Bang in the middle of upper west side. Right next to subway station and central park. Location, cheap, clean and charging ports next to the bed. The three things a nomad needs
If youre after a simple, clean base in NYC this hostel is a great option. The facilities are excellent, and with the exception of the bathrooms at the end of the day, the cleanliness is great. The atmosphere is different to a youth hostel though as there are people of all ages including floods of school children and their teachers. That said, efforts are made to accomodate those used to a typical hostel atmosphere. ie: pub crawls, communal areas etc. Overall the balance actually seems to work well as everybody seems well behaved.I found that the staff were friendly and helpful throughout my stay, although, one or two seemed as though they were the ones who were checking out. Of most concern, however, was their expectations on solo travellers to constantly change rooms. I found it very frustrating that they seemed to think this was reasonable without offering additional discounts or even apologies. Perhaps once in a week would be fair but I was told to check out and in again on four of my six days, similar to other soll travellers. This means leaving luggage behind their counter and not having a room again until late afternoon. At least it means fresh sheets again but it is a pain if you want to sleep in, nap in the day, or get in at night and go straight to bed.
Too few bathrooms, the ones they do have are like swamps, smelly and humid. The bins were emptied way no where near enough. They are renovating the lift, but didnt tell me, I picked it because it said it had a lift and I had a huge suitcase, no one offered to help either. They were also renovating other areas of the place, the common areas, which meant they were not available to use. This wasnt disclosed beforehand either. They also provide you with a direct way to contact the front desk, I was traveling alone and got really ill and couldnt contact anyone for assistance.
Pros:- Price- Great for solo travelers- Closely located to subway stop- Clean facilities- Friendly staffCons- Small/short bedsLocated on Amsterdam and 103st, this in the upper west side of Manhattan. If youre on a budget but still want to be in Manhattan then this is a good option. The neighborhood is okay but has been improving recently. The fact facilities are clean and the staff friendly. They provide complimentary luggage storage if you arrive before your check in time and $5 storage after your check out time if you want to use it. Each bed is assigned a locker inside the room. Also each bed has its own light and outlets. Downside are that the beds are a little small and may be a problem if youre taller than 6ft.
My first time here 😍. Super clean and various things to do always . Crew is very attentive and no just that, amazing prices. Im staying 7 days and everything is close by too, taxi, train, shops pizza , supermarkets etc. Another thing I almost missed was the huge kitchen. I didnt get to use it but is pretty convenient. Ill definitely book here again.
Ive stayed here annually with my university student organization for 3 years, and I am very impressed with all the improvements made! Hot breakfast, neat restrooms, and cool atmosphere. Id recommend bringing your own fleece blanket to sleep with, but otherwise this is the best hostel compared to the Boston and Santa Monica ones.
One of the hostels with friendly atmosphere and reasonably priced services.Clean beds and big showers, several common rooms with USB or electricity ports to charge the devices, big kitchen - even with a blender. The hostel has own bistro, where you can get breakfast. Central park is 10 minute walk from here and connection to the heart of Manhattan is possible within 30 minutes by subway lines from the 103st Station. Natural history museum is 25 walk from here and there are many grocery shop in the area. Staff are friendly and responsible, and they always gave me a good advice. I also met a few interesting people here during my 3 day stay.
Great place for an affordable price! Wish I could give it more stars. I stayed here for a couple of days and I wish I had stayed here for the whole of my trip to NYC. The restrooms are really clean (and abundant!). The place is very well maintained and classy enough. Plus theres a LOT of different places (including a garden outside) around the lobby where you can sit and work with charging outlets beside (because the beds at the dorm may not be spacious enough to allow you to sit). The staff are very polite too, and you can get your money refunded if you let them know that youre leaving 24 hours in advance (my plans changed and I had to leave mid-way). Im going to stay here the next time I visit NYC or Columbia! :-)
This is the best hostel Ive ever stayed at, and Ive been at a lot of hostels. Tons of shower stalls. Has hair dryers on the walls. Rooms are clean and modern, complete with plugs at your bed. You even get a towel; I shouldnt have brought my own. Do bring shampoo and conditioner. Otherwise, the dorm felt like a communal hotel!
The location and facilities within this hostel are brilliant- one street away from the subway. The only downside was they mixed up my booking and I had to stay in a coed dorm rather then single gender as booked. Still rating it 5 stars for price, included breakfast and facilities- best hostel Ive been to in a long time - I will 100% only stay here when in NYC from now on!
If you are a student or traveling on a budget, I would highly recommend this hostel. Very close to public transportation. Free breakfast every day. They also have many planned activities available to visit the sights of the City. Very clean, especially the bathrooms. We were fortunate to stay in the penthouse apartment, and what a joy and special experience! (The penthouse is not available for private purchase, I believe.) The staff is very pleasant, especially considering how busy they are. Anyone considering staying in NYC, should check this place out!
Standard rooms have about 8 bunk beds in the room and have a large dorm-like bathroom per sex. Amenities are plentiful including cafe but youre better off heading to stores and restaurants nearby for a better experience. Most of the staff are nice, helpful people. Dont fall for the free breakfast ad, you have to have a premium room. A/C wasnt very warm throughout the night. Keycard required to enter beyond lobby. Super close to metro stations for easy access around town. Area is not the greatest looking safety wise but never had any problems. Good stay overall but be cautious of the guided tour with the older guy(local). His price is cheap but he pulls a fast one on you by losing you in crowds. The hostel plays along by saying he doesnt have a phone.
The owners getting greedy. ..The so called deluxe room had 4 beds, now 6. Feels like sleeping in a closet. Ridiculous!!!!. 70 bucks for sleeping in a stuffy closet. 70×6= 420 bucks for bunk beds in a closet. Not bad business on idiots. Got dirty bed, ran up and down twice to the front desk to fix it, no action from a black guy)))))), after an hour, took another clean bed in the room by myself, suggested him to switch the beds in the computer, he refused AND SAID I WILL BE QUESTIONED ABOUT TAKING THE OTHER BED INSTEAD OF DIRTY ONE!!!!! The manager came and fixed the problem immediately, it looks like reverse racism to me, there is a lot of it in NY thanks to Obama and liberals. Black guy forgot to give me coupon for free breakfast too. Asked about it by myself.Never again, used to stay there a lot though.
Thank YOU, HI!Clean, Welcoming, Upbeat!Well located, Well trained staff, Value for Money(Could carpets perhaps have done with a little more steam cleaning? While the Mattress was wonderful, the bed-springs (bed 426D) were weak, & I ended up witah a recurring backache; that said, you have well-trained and dedicated staff. Kudos
For a hostel, it’s amazing. The staff are really nice, the rooms are clean enough and air conditioned, the food is pretty good, and it’s convenient and close to the subway station and Broadway and Central Park in general. There is also a game room with a pool table. It’s overall pretty good for a hostel.
Could be better. Free tours of Central Park. Slow elevator. Needs improvement!Update: Returned this Spring, same old Hostel. Problems are, super slow elevator. Desperately need upgrade to elevator service. Suggest adding another elevator. Current elevator is a service elevator as well as a passenger elevator. Many times one must share elevator with huge baskets of bedding, towels, etc. And elevator is slow! Stairs are not convenient to Central Hostel area. This is not a great Hostel, but it is good. Met many nice folks here. Definitely worth a try!
This is about as good as a hostel gets. Clean, nice even, fantastic staff and great activities in a good location on the Upper West Side. My only issue was a slightly to soft mattress. As a single traveler you wont get a better deal in NYC - I paid $57 for a bunk in a 4 bed luxury dorm.
Been there twice and absolutely love it. Would recommend it to anyone and everyone. Just because youre on a budget, doesnt mean you have give up on safety or cleanliness. Since the accommodations are dorm-style, its a more attractive option for those of us in the millennial generation.
My family and I spent a few nights here at the beginning of May. Didn’t see too much of the hostel since we were busy exploring the city, but the interactions we had with the staff were positive. We all had different reservations and needed to take a day off all of them and the front desk staff checking us in was super patient, it’s been a while but I think his name was Austin? So, thanks, Austin (hopefully that’s the right name!) and the rest of HI NYC team! :)
I came here basically for the less expensive tours and activities they organise. It was good, fun filled and inexpensive. TBH, I would strongly recommend this hostel especially great if youre traveling alone, as I was. Great price, good range of useful facilities (including laundry room and kitchen), clean, and in a safe and accessible location. The staff is very friendly, bathrooms are big and has enough baths and toilets. They have a lot of interesting events and the WiFi worked perfectly. Ill visit again soon.

2022-04-29Pros:Clean rooms and bathroom.Nice little cafe downstairs with plenty of tables to sit at.Friendly staffCons:There are a Lot of younger people. And when I say young, I mean 16-18 year olds and even younger than that. They were extremely loud on the evening, quite distracting when I just wanted to chill. I feel like the hostel should have an 18+ age restriction. Also the cafe closes really early too. Id often get back around 2pm and it was already shut for the day so its only available in the morning time which is a bit inconvenient.Overall, a pleasant stay. I travelled on my own and met a couple of other friendly solo travelers, however most people stick to themselves so if you are relying on meeting others then Id recommend somewhere else. Friendly and helpful staff. Also its a great location too! A short subway ride to times square/Broadway and a short walk to Central Park which was perfect.

2022-01-19Great place to stay in NYC for cheap. On the 1, so its going everywhere. Not the best place to meet people and have fun but its fine. Clean almost everywhere, I just doubt about the sheets : I had hairs and others small stuff on it, hopefully it was not bed bugs. Staff is pretty friendly ! Cool place

The top bunk made no noise as I clambered up there. Water filter. Stylish and updated. MANY common areas. There’s a freaking breakfast cafe inside!!! I cannot believe I wanted to try a different hostel… just stay here!!

2022-06-15I had a very nice stay at the hostel. It was clean and the location of the hostel is very good! It is only a few minutes walk to the subway and the Central Park is not far away too. Also it is not too expensive compared to other accommodations in NYC.They also have a nice patio where you can spend the evenings with the other visitors.Only the line for the check-in was very long, but I would definitely recommend the hostel for a stay in New York City!

2022-07-02For a hostel its not bad. The dorms are clean and the staff is friendly. The coffee is pretty good for how cheap it is (compared to nearby coffee shops). If youre a light sleeper you might not get a lot sleep as people come in and out of the rooms often. The beds are okay. Probably about the same as a college dorm.

2022-07-07Stayed for 3 nights and overall a very good experience. The dorm was 10 beds but very spacious, did not feel cramped was clean daily and bathrooms were generally very clean! All staff very friendly to! The reception was always very very busy with people arriving so had to wait at times. They have lockers to store your stuff before and after check in, it was a pretty complicated system and half were out of order. Nice terrace area and social areas. Overall really good and would stay again

2022-07-01Only been here about 1/2 an hr.the staff is pleasant. Clean building. Very cold maybe too cold ac. You can make and store your own food here. That is nice. They also have breakfast and lunch here. Not bad for solo travelers and the rates are great for NYC

2022-04-23Chose this place based on proximity to the park and price. Stayed in a private room which was great if you are into hostelling. We had a queen bed ,plus a set of bunks. And a private bathroom. Lots of space. There is a TV and mini fridge which was very convenient. The main kitchen area is very nice but the fridges was a disaster compared to other hostels weve stayed in. It was pretty noisy in the hostel but that was likely due to large groups of kids from Europe. If you are coming to NYC on the cheap this is a great option. Very easy to get around from here. Would stay here again for sure.

2022-06-30This was a super comfortable space. We had our own locker in our room without extra cost (bring a padlock), the food and coffee its good, nice and bilingual service (Spanish and English). Its a safe space to stay just a few blocks from Central Park. Its not cheap but for the location and clean rooms and bathrooms its worth it.
