This is the first time that we have visited Kondo since the pandemic began, and it was better than ever before. Kondo and his wife run an open but intimate sushi bar. I think hes simply THE BEST sushi chef in Queens. His wife is adorable, and a brilliant graphic artist. The $40 Sushi Deluxe is the best fish for the best value!
Best sushi Ive ever had. The high level of service combined with the impeccable food quality, really elevates this restaurant to something special. The staff are friendly and attentive, and the sushi chefs really know what theyre doing, take theyre job seriously, and are a delight to engage with. My advice is to sit at the bar, and watch your meal being prepared. Its also fun/inspirational to see what other people order.Despite being a bit more expensive than other sushi spots in the area, it remains a standout favorite.
Id heard good things, but a great sushi spot a block away from the Broadway stop in Astoria? While I love eating in the neighborhood, excellent freshly prepared sushi is not a thing I was expecting. I have my sushi delivery spots, and some places have some fun rolls...but thats a different world. And Kondo really is a world apart. The fish itself is fresh, the knifework precise, and the end product fantastic. My sashimi assortment evaporated after the first bite as I couldnt make myself pause, and my partners nigiri and roll were not trying to do anything too crazy but managing to be sublime. I also ordered the braised pork belly and the grilled chicken yakitori and those also were on the same level.Just an altogether unexpected pleasure for a chilly Thursday night in Queens!
Ridiculously good sushi.Scalop Sushi is to die for, Medium Fatty Tuna appetizer, Yellowtail Jallapeno apetiser, Fried Tuna Cake, Shishito Pepper Tempura, you name it, they have it. Dont know what you like? Try the Chirashi, then get a-la cart of what you liked best to finish. My wife and I go here twice a week sometimes. If you want to try a very good hot sake try the Nigori. They also frequently have Uni from Japan a-la cart, ask since its not on the menu.Literally anything you have here is very good/fantastic.The owners are very friendly, hardworking people, we came here so many times that we eventually bought shirts.I dont go to any other sushi place anymore, this one is too good.
Amazing sushi. Very fair price. The waiters and staff are friendly and reflect Japanese culture! The chef is very friendly! Everyone wants to come back. Once you eat here, come back here again. Food and service are very good, you can come to a standard sushi order, but as a more traditional Japanese restaurant, the attention to quality is obvious,
Easily the best traditional sushi in Astoria. Kondo (the head sushi chef) and his wife are incredibly warm and friendly. The sushi is consistently delicious and super fresh. Kondo’s hotate (scallop), uni (sea urchin), saba (mackerel), and buri (yellowtail) are highlights but everything will be great. If you want real authentic traditional Japanese sushi (no silly Instagram-worthy fusion rolls here) but don’t necessarily want to spend $200 on omakase, this is your spot.
This was the first time I’ve had really high quality sushi. For this quality, you’d normally have to spend an arm and a leg in Manhattan. You can tell it’s quality by the freshness, the taste, texture, and how it’s perfectly prepared. My boyfriend and I each got the sushi regular and we ordered two rolls as well to share. We both loved the food. We also got dessert and they were amazing as well. I definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for high quality sushi at a more reasonable price
We went here for a casual date night. The food was really amazing, especially at this price point. I kept it simple and just got too rolls. My boyfriend got the sushi regular and really enjoyed it. I’m also unable to eat gluten so I brought my own soy sauce and they were totally cool with it.
We dine there in November and I can say that is the best Japanese in astoria by far .the restaurant is minimalistic, clean, sleek, chic . The food is very well executed ,harmony of colors and contrast of flavors. the service is traditional Japanese approached the ambiance makes you feel a d transform to a very special place . Because of covid they only offering take out now but cant wait for the indoor dining to resume to go back .
Ive been a couple of times for lunch and the food and service have been really good. You can come and get a standard sushi order but as a more traditional Japanese restaurant their best option are the daily specials. The attention to quality is evident in things like the miso soup and wasabi. I havent been for a sushi dinner yet but have heard positive things and plan on going in the next few weeks.
This one waitress was extremely rude, was giving attitude after I told her it’s been like 30 minutes I haven’t received any appetizers, and they said the only thing I can order is appetizers not anything else because they said they were “too busy” . And when our first appetizers came she slammed the food on the table. What is up with the attitude?
Genuinely the best sushi in Astoria. This isnt the take out stuff, its authentically Japanese by the way they get their produce and prepare. Get the chef special omikase and experience exactly what Im writing about. The space is beautiful and Ill definitely be coming back.
Hands down THE BEST authentic sushi restaurant in Astoria, and possibly my favorite in all of NYC. The sushi options rotate regularly depending on what is fresh. The appetizers are all excellent as well. At one point, I was blowing all my money on this restaurant once a week.
Food & service were way below average. The server came over and said “can I take your order?” What is this McDonald’s?! They never once checked on us either. The sushi was the only thing decent. But everything is so overpriced and mediocre. The atmosphere is strange and sterile feeling. The worst part was when I got the chicken teriyaki, it was nothing what chicken teriyaki is supposed to be. It was a piece of pan seared chicken seasoned with salt and pepper with the skin on, and had so much fat on it, it was inedible. Absolutely no teriyaki sauce or anything on it. When I told the server that I just couldn’t eat it, and asked if I could replace with salmon. She walked away annoyed and came back and told me their “policy” is that you must eat what you order and they would charge me for a salmon teriyaki. I was surprised by this, because as she could see I only took one bite of my dish! So, I didn’t eat dinner that night! What kind of hospitality is that in a restaurant!? They won’t last. And we certainly won’t be back.
The best Sushi experience in Queens by far.Wife and I went out to experience sushi at our regular place, however they were close, Kondo was just around the corner so we stopped by.the atmosphere was great, you can actually talk and not scream like other restaurants, very friendly staff that were there for all of our needs.wife was craving Kani salad, and although it wasnt on the menu, the chef was attentive and heard our request, soon enough we had a great Kani salad only Kondo can pull out. the crab meat was chunky and tasty, the pickle cucumbers were just spicy enough to give the seaweed that special touch.we were out for the night looking to have couple of rolls ... we ended up indulging ourselves with the following (ALL ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)Sliced Seared BeefFresh Octopus Carpacciopork dumplingsBluefin Fatty TunaFried TofuSoft shell crab TempuraShrimp TempuraSpicy TunaEdamameI mean, for going out for couple of rolls to getting ALL of the above, and loving every bite of them? Come on! you need to try this place!and the Chef! very good vibes! he couldnt believe we were eating so much! :)
Came here with 2 people and were easily seated. Did not have reservations but the place was not busy. For appetizers, we ordered the shishito peppers and black cod.I thought the shishito peppers was the better dish out of the two. Mainly because it was better cooked. It was lightly fried, the bell pepper wasnt too soggy and the salt that came with it was a good complement. The black cod itself was good but the skin was overcooked and a little burnt. There was too much alcohol in the dish. It wasnt a balanced dish. For main course, we ordered eel & avocado and soft shell crab rolls. We also ordered some kind of dashi mushroom soup and vegetable tempura. I thought out of all the dishes, the dashi mushroom + other ingredients (which I dont remember) soup stood out. The flavor profile felt more unique and more flavorful than the other dishes but it wasnt worth the price point. Nothing stood out in the other dishes.Overall, this place is over priced and the food was just alright. Unfortunately, we left hungry. The atmosphere is nice and the decor of the restaurant is great. From our time there, I saw quite a few patrons eating at the bar. My assumption is that they have good turn around for the sushi so nothing is left standing for too long. Perhaps their sashimi is better than their other options at this place but I doubt I will be coming back.

2022-01-20Kondo gives a true authentic Japanese experience. The restaurant is unassuming from the outside and very simple in decoration. The sushi and sashimi are also simple but absolutely delicious. The fish is extremely fresh and there’s a nice selection of appetizers like mushroom and scallop (in photo) I think this is the best sushi place in Astoria and maybe the best in Queens. The place does get crowded so it’s a good idea to get reservations.

2022-02-28The food was absolutely amazing. So fresh, so unique, and so reasonably priced! I absolutely want to return more than once to try everything on their menu. Pretty busy on a Sunday evening also! The service is also perfect. Had an amazing dinner.

2021-08-15Went to Kondo today and sat outside for a nice dinner. The staff was pleasant and was quick to bring out our food and refill our water. The food was all fresh and tasty. Had a mix of things, tempura, sushi, scallops, and more.Everything was prepared very well and really hit the spot. There wasnt anything to detract from the meal save for a few errant passing motorcycles.A very good place to go for Japanese cuisine.

2022-04-01The staff were incredibly friendly and polite. Its a true Japanese establishment with good vibes and good service. The sushi was very good. 4 stars just because there wasnt more of a selection, but otherwise it was good and filling.

2022-02-27I instantly had a bad taste in my mouth when at the bottom of the menu it says $20 minimum per person. Very tacky. Me and my hundred pound girlfriend ordered two appetizers and two sushi rolls which are plenty enough to fill us up, and they were all in a huff because it was only gonna come out to $31. Thank God we ordered a dessert to make it 40 bucks worth. The food was Adequate, somethings were tasty somethings were average. I’m not cheap, and spend about $20 a person when I go to dinner at least, it’s just bad business and makes me never want to go to this place again, because overall, it’s an average sushi place with only sushi basically.

2022-05-26Amazing dining experience. From the accessible entrance to the little propagations of plants, from the glass bottles with fresh flower and the name of Paris Baguette on it to the fantastic display of the sushi bar, from the hand-written menu with little manga to the lady wearing kimono, this place is more than a place to eat. Its a interesting place to drink, observe, and experience. Every dish we ordered was good, regarding the high quality of fish and umami taste. Im appreciative that Astoria has this restaurant.

2019-01-13Service was sweet and lovely. The use of space is a bit strange but it feels spacious. But the food is really below average. The rice was terrible, overcooked and stale. And the first row of sushi all had a fishy taste (not to mention they were all tiny in size). The oyster was gigantic but wasnt great. The ankimono texture was dry and unappealing. Best thing was maybe the almond tofu for dessert. Probably not coming back.

2018-07-01Kondo offers fresh and delicious sushi any day of the week. Our favorite is the spicy tuna crunch. We occasionally try new things and are never disappointed. Their deserts are also great! Make sure to try their Green Tea Parfait. We love the staff. They are very friendly. This is possibly the best sushi place in Astoria.
