This museum is very educational and interesting. I would definitely recommend as a place for people to visit. An African American inventor that made great contributions to science and technology. They a have a Tinker Lab summer camp for kids which is great for the little innovators.
The Latimer House Museum is the best place to learn about this amazing inventor and civic leader. Latimer lived in this house, which was saved from demolition by local preservationists. Latimer, the son of a former slave, worked with both Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison on a number of innovative technologies. As the inventor of the carbon filament, Latimer is credited with the development of the incandescent light bulb. The museum is open for tours and childrens programs throughout the year. There are exhibits on Latimer life and achievements. Check the website for business hours.
Lewis Latimer was the son of escaped slaves. He had limited formal education but was a brilliant person. He was a gifted draftsman, inventor, artist and writer. He is responsible for perfecting the filament used in light bulbs to make them viable. He also electrified several cities. The Latimer House is his residence which is now a museum and an educational space. It is part of the NYC Parks Department. It is accessible to public transportation. Parking is available but limited.

2017-10-18I went to this on the open house New York weekend. It was an inspirational visit. A guide takes you through the rooms downstairs and gives an overview of Latimers life. There are great informative posters in the walls to supplement the tour. Though you dont get to go upstairs it is still a wonderful experience. Parking was easy on a Sunday in the street. Definitely worth a visit to learn about an American genius.

2018-02-19This is a small museum slowly but surely growing as they added programs for children. The museum tour is really nice and its a one on one tour as they patiently explain everything and answer all your questions. The people are obviously really nice and the yard is really pretty too.
