The food at this place is just top notch! They must have an incredible Chef! I highly recommend the fish taco appetizers! Now lets talk about the service. We had a table of 6. Our waiter didnt rush us, also was very very articulate and knowledgeable of each and every entree. I certainly plan on going back again ! And I live an hour from this great dining experience. Just perfect. Thank you ! Signed, Daniel R from Pine Plains NY.
Exactly what we were looking for. Great food and unpretentious vibes. We sat at the bar, picked at some appetizers, had some beers and finished the night with burgers. They are short staffed (who isn’t) but the bartender explained the situation ahead of time so we weren’t surprised!
It was nice, the customer service was on point. The food was delicious. Seriously going back just for the food. I got the beacon balls which were great and my friend got the shrimp. She was really impressed and she caters. What really topped it off was the live music. That guy on the guitar have his all. He had a really good voice. The kitchen staff even came out and complemented him. Told him he had a southern vibe or a Texas flow not sure which.Going back for sure.
Really great beers like this Icelandic beer I tried. Great vibe in downtown Beacon. There are fun food items and special events going on all week that you can take part in, or not. People were friendly and wait staff was helpful. I enjoyed the option of sitting in the quieter dining area or the busier bar with high top tables. I’ll be back.
Excellent choice for a mid-week lunch on our vacation. Our waiter, Grant, very attentive and the owner, Rich, very personable! Food was very good and portions satisfying. Traveling from Connecticut and would gladly make repeat visit. Definitely a local flavor experience.
I ordered drinks the day before and they were great . I went back today and ordered 2 Warm & fuzzy, and 1 In to the Woods. They were completely inconsistent from what I ordered the day before. No ice at all completely warm. The cups were barely filled ⅓ of the way when the day before it was filled almost to the top. Very disappointed
Speaking squarely on picking food up, because I have not sat in here to eat. Best fish fry in have found in the area. Chicken tenders for the kid make me hope he does not eat them all... they are delicious. Great potato wedges too! I don’t think any of the food has ever seen a freezer. Super fresh and yummy even after sitting in a take out box for 15-20mins.
Food may be good, certain aspects of the staff may be very nice. Ive however had two interactions with an owner on two different visits. Both times they seemed quite unpleasant. Brought the whole experience down. I thought maybe my first visit was a rare fluke. Was in town again, gave it another shot. Same basic experience. Sorry to those that find this place to be a gem, but I will not recommend or revisit.
The owner gave up his prime seat outside so we could have the best seats on a beautiful night! He could not have been more hospitable and went out of his way to make us feel welcome, a genuinely nice guy. Food, local beers and service were outstanding overall! Don’t miss the pirogies and french onion soup. Highly recommended.
This place is awful!. It smells like grease once you walk into the place and the staff are terrible. Ask about seating from one waitress and she disappeared into the back. Once she emerged she never came near me. Another older guy went out to look to see if there was outdoor seating - waited 5 mins - went outside and he was talking to someone. when I asked about the seating he totally snapped. It was a simple 2 second question/answer - just answer it and move on. Horrible place - there are other restaurants in town. One star only because I had to in order to post.
Anything open among covid is not all great. This place though, is not one of them. Place was dark but enough light to see and walk around (to and from the bathroom). Food and drinks were great, I recommend the firecracker shrimp to start. Me and my date had the steak salad. Wasnt bad and the steak was cooked the way we wanted. Service was A+, very attentive and helpful with whatever we needed. Once again its difficult to rate resturants more accurately as Id like but I can see myself coming back!
It’s a typical sports bar. It was nice to be inside watching sports on the TV. Haven’t been able to do that since March living in NYC. We got the wings Main Street style and the Beacon rolls. The food was adequate. It wasn’t great. It wasn’t bad. All in all it was a nice escape from the cold and filled us up but I’ll likely try somewhere new when we go visit next.
Went there. Met the owners wife Jan she was the only delightful part. Then all went to hell. I went there with my son and had two beers. They tried to charge me for two appetizers. I understand the rules with the new drinking laws. But that’s just ridiculous. I also paid them in cash so they wouldn’t even have to report it to the government.
We make a point of visiting Maxs every time we are in Beacon, which means that we have sampled nearly the entire menu over the last several years. And, given that the really creative menu always has something new, and tasty regularly, we are always happy. Service is great, the waitstaff very friendly, and the owners circulate throughout the evening among the diners as well as those dropping in to sample the excellent beer selection and mixed drinks. Amazingly, a visit is very reasonable, which no doubt contributes to Maxs reputation as one of the best pub/restaurants in Beacon frequented by residents as well as visitors from the City.
St. Patty’s Day: Worst corned beef I have ever eaten in my life. So fatty I couldn’t eat a bite, and neither could my husband. And the cabbage? Virtually none; microscopic bits of cabbage buried in the mashed potatoes. Awful. We just left it all on the plate bc we were with a large group who had ordered other things, and seemed somewhat content. I gave 2 stars for the ambiance, beer choices, and considerate servers.
Love this place! Been going for, at least 3 years. Always a good time. I go mostly on Thursday nights for the karaoke/steak night. (But weekend live entertainment there too.) Always fun to sing karaoke & cheer on others. The crowd is varied in age from young to older like me lol!! Its a friendly atmosphere with a feel of Cheers... where everybody knows your name. The owner, Rich, made us feel at home on our very FIRST visit! And...did I mention that the food is delicious??! For what seems like a small neighborhood bar, youd be surprised how good the steaks are!! Go, you wont be sorry!
First time here. Told the hostess we were just looking for some drinks while watching the game. After a few I wanted to order some appetizers. We get our first round from the waitress, who asks if she could take our menus. We said we’re good for now. She then says, “just so you know, the tables are for food service only. I mean enjoy your drink, but after, you’ll have to go to the bar. No nice way to say it.”Uh? There’s ABSOLUTELY a nice way to say it. I manage a restaurant. I find ways to say things in a nice way all day. My boyfriend is a bartender. We’re not just some kids going to rack up a tab and not tip. We ended up closing out right then and there. Very disappointed. Will not return.
Went in for some beer and karaoke on a Thurs night. The owner was an amazingly kind, generous, outgoing guy and great conversationalist. Would easily be 5 stars if the bartender and karaoke dj could at least crack a smile. Didnt have any food but fellow patrons seemed to be very happy with their meals. Will definitely be going back at my first opportunity.
Food was awesomeService on point....and they were busy. Our waitress and the OWNER came to not just check on us but chat!! Made us feel like family. This is a MUST. Most certainly will be back. Not to mention, I lived in Beacon 30 years ago....and LOVE the changes made.....we all went for a walk later and loved peeping into the stores (will be back to shop) and checking out the scene.
Went to Maxs in hopes of some good food and better beer. When my friend and I arrived we sat at the bar, almost directly in front of a bar tender and she ignored us for about 10 mins and then finally asked us what we wanted. She was very focused on a group of guys at the end of the bar and I basically had to beg for a food menu after we ordered our first beer. I was expecting a lot more from this place due to the fact it was busy most night I drove or walked past. The night I decided to try it out it was actually not very busy and still the service was slow. The food was actually pretty good and the beer selection was about like every other regular bar. Theres a bar a little farther down main with better beer, but the food isnt as great. The only reason Im giving one star is because the food wasnt bad. Get better bar tenders!
Ive been coming here since they opened in 2006. Still the best spot in Beacon. Great atmosphere, amazing staff, ice cold beer, good drinks and even better food. Try the Beacon Rolls, my personal favorite. Great for a cold drink after a hike, or day of walking around Beacon. Perfect for dinner.
Always good , food and drinks on point, service good , the only thing I dont recommend is the fish and chips , Ive had them three times and the last two were way to greasy. ...there is the bar side with cocktail tables and then the other side is full service tables .....go and enjoy the owner is using there and very pleasant.
We celebrated 4 family members birthdays all at once bringing in 20 people. We were given the royal treatment for sure. Everyone loved their meal and the extra attention we were given. Thank you for making our Birthdays great. Couldnt have been more pleased with service and food.
The pierogies were so deep fried that they were nearly impossible to cut with a knife. My burger, most likely 80%, appeared to be cooked on a griddle and very greasy. I asked our waitress if I could have some horseradish. She returned a few minutes later saying they had it, but she would have to go to the basement and find it. So no horseradish. This was our go to place for a nice, inexpensive meal...
Went here last night with a friend for food and drinks, the waitress was horrible. She was beyond rude and smug when we asked her how the margaritas were and if the steaks were frozen filets or fresh. She stared at us as if we were retarded and then said well I don’t even know if steaks come frozen! she proceeded to say they’re fresh. Needless to say we had a great margarita but a horribly dry, tasteless rib eye steak that was definitely frozen. We sent it back and of course she was very dismissive and we heard her complaining to the other staff about us. Not one manager came to us to discuss the issue either. We were left waiting for a check and finally had to ask for one, which it was just thrown on the table in disgust. Business owners have to be very careful of the staff they hire because they are most likely the cause of disgruntled patrons. I will never be back and I will be sure to tell my family and friends not to go there.
Maxs is the best there is. Its the place where everyone knows your name. If you want great food and a chill atmosphere come here. Everyone is so friendly. The food is ALWAYS good. I honestly have never had anything bad here. most days its busy. You dont need a reservation but if you have a big crowd its recommended. Happy Hours and dinners are the busiest. Sometimes you have to wait but it is honestly worth the wait. Hang out at the bar for a little bit til you can grab a table. If your here on the weekends ESPECIALLY in the spring and summer get here early or reserve because you probably wont get a table. Beacon is poppin during the warmer months and we get the hiking tourist and out of towners every weekend.
My first and last time at Maxs on main was disappointing. As I arrived at the entrance I thought, I hope the food and drinks here are better than the appearance of this restaurant. Maxs is outdated, dark and dingy looking. I reluctantly made my way in to meet a friend for dinner. I ordered a basic cocktail and the bartender didnt make it any more appealing with garnishes or a fancy glass, it was ultimately too sweet and I sent it back. We ordered pierogis and the fire cracker shrimp for an appetizer. The pierogi was very good, the firecracker shrimp was not what I expected. I was hoping for spicy and flavorful it was neither. It seemed as though the sauce was poured from a store bought bottle after the shrimp was plated. We didnt order dinner. Final thought, sometimes looks arent deceiving.
Wow!! What a great experience. We walked into Maxs on a Saturday night, during NFL Playoffs. The place was packed with football fans. Regardless of the amount of folks within seconds of walking through the door, the owner of Maxs greeted us and got a seat immediately. We had a friendly waiter who got our drinks quickly. The food that was delivered was delicious (especially the corn fritters). Maxs looks like a neighborhood bar with a NYC feel to it. If you are looking for fancy quiet dinner for two, you wont get that here (although they did have really nice silverware and real cloth napkins). But, you will get a great dining experience and walk away wanting to come back another day.
Disappointing food and service unfortunately. Had high hopes but everything tasted frozen and the service lacked quite a bit by our server. We were greeted by a very enthusiastic gentleman which was pleasant but overall highly disappointing. ☹️ One thing that surprised me, however, was that our server did pack up our leftovers which I thought was nice but very inconsistent with the level of service the whole time beforehand.
Friendly local sports bar. This is my favorite place around to go watch a good ball game, chat with the bartenders, have a brew, eat some tasty greasy food Ill somewhat regret, and just kick back for a while. Most of the other folks wholl be there will be bros and middle-aged couples, but (as neither of those) Ive always felt totally welcomed there. The proprietor always putters around making sure everyones taken care of. The foods unoriginal but generous, solid bar food. I recommend the perogis - tender Polish potato dumplings smothered in butter and grilled onions and sour cream.
Chose to go here because of the number of stars. Our waiter, Dillon, was very attentive and nice but I was very disappointed with my meal. I had the rib eye steak and sesame rice as a side. I asked that the steak be cooked medium but it was more well done and the sesame rice had no sesame flavor. We could also hear someone at the other end of the room, maybe a customer from the bar, talking to another person, maybe the cook, using profanity, I would like to share what they were saying but it would be inappropriate. My husband said his meal was good; he had salmon. Thats why I gave it two stars.
What a gem! We visited Beacon this weekend, and Rich (the owner), his brother and his son were a highlight of our stay. We had to go back to Maxs again the next day.In addition to the massive plates of food (that 6 dudes coming from a hike couldnt finish), and cold drinks, the owners do an amazing job circling between tables telling jokes and stories and making sure everyones feeling welcome. You can tell the staff were all having just as much fun as the guests. This is one of those rare places that I wish was in every town.Thank you Rich & co!
Some friends and I went to this place to unwind and have a drink and were treated horribly. The waitress at the time told us we could not sit down and both bartenders gave us all a hard time ignoring us and being very rude. We had one drink and left. Both bartenders ignored us for more than 10 minutes when we were just trying to close our tab and leave! The worst customer service I ever experienced!!! I do not recommend going to this place.
Maxs is my FAVORITE lunch spot on Main Street and in Beacon altogether. I would eat here every day if my coworkers would allow it because (besides the fact that there arent many really great places in the immediate area that have good food and dont screw up every order) #1- the food is great, #2- the staff is attentive and friendly, and #3- the prices are good. Try the Ultimate Steakhouse Salad, the Taking of Chicken 1-2-3, or Maxs Ultimate Steak Sandwich - all my favorites!
I went here for dinner with a colleague of mine and she mistakenly left her nice leather jacket behind. I ment to retrieve it but of course life got in the way. Nearly a month later she asked about it and I went back to Maxs to see if they had it. To my astonishment, they did! Now, they easily could have told me they were not responsible, or one of the staff could have claimed it for themselves (it was an expensive jacket) but they did an honest act and held it to be picked up. Thank you so much! The food, drinks and atmosphere here are awesome as well. Well be back in short order.
I try to come here as often I can get to Beacon NY. You must have pirogies. Served with sautéed onions, sour cream, and salsa. pairs great with burgers, steak. Or have pirogies with your favorite beer. Say hello to Jesse & Richie. This place has a true NEW YORK vibe. You can choose between indoor seating either in the restaurant side or on the bar side, you can also choose the outdoor option. They follow all local Covid guid lines.
My go-to spot in Beacon. Great food and lots of it. All food just pub food, but good nevertheless, nothing hoity-toity about it, which goes against the farm-to-table chicness of Beacon right now. Love that they have carried a local brewery beer, Two Way Brewery, from just down the road, for the better part of this year. Service is timely and friendly (not too overboard, which is great). Would highly recommend if youre looking to get a meal, chill, and perhaps watch some sports on the 6-8 tvs. Good stuff.
Id give zero stars if I could. the guy checking IDs at the front was extremely transphobic towards my friend and held us up asking questions about his ID photo. he finally relented when my friend showed other forms of ID with the same name but the damage was done and we felt uncomfortable the entire night. for a place that claims to be a safe space against racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia, we expected way better than to be interrogated an taunted as soon as we walked in.
The food taste great for that 5starCleaning is the most important part of the food business, somebody has to remind these guys that it is important to show some respect to your clients and keep bathrooms and restaurant clean, hire 1 more guy just for cleaning.Have someone mop the restroom, spray the tile and wipe it, whats soo complicated about it? Randomly printed meaningless signs in the bathroom that nobody cares, offer your client a nice bathroom where they can enjoy taking their times.Change that old fashion cheap carpet in the restaurant area where you have people seated. This place needs some work, you cant just collect money and not invest in your business. If you have the visible areas in this condition I dont even want to think about basement and prep areas.I wouldnt go back here until I see some changes done, 3 1/2 star.
The atmosphere is a mix between straight up dive, sports bar, and restaurant bar. There are amusing puns posted up in the bathrooms for perusing during your inebriated drainings. There are a million TVs in there, so sports fans can be sure their fav local team will get viewing space. The live music is usually pretty good when they have someone in.Im terms of food, the Firecracker Shrimp is to die for.
Double standards. My boyfriend was denied entry because he had a tank top on. Of course women in our party and female employees had sleeveless tops on, which is great. But denying entry to a male for no sleeves is nothing short of discriminatory. Shameful policies reflect shameful environments. Go somewhere more inclusive.
Maxs on main st. Was awesome, my wife and I were looking for a place to eat after being a the DIA: Beacon museum... We walked 5 blocks on main Street and we were going to turn around but decided to go a little further..... When we stopped at Maxs...The staff was great, Erica our server was very nice and helpful.... Rich the owner, works as hard as his friendly staff... I hope someday to be able to make it back there... And wish we lived closer.... Oh, and I should add the food was great as well....Thank youEthan TeicherQueens NY
When you have the owner of the place come to your table drunk as a skunk while your holding a fork in had and belligerently say We have metal detectors at the door.... what do you say? No idea he was the owner just my 1st time there and some random person comes up to me. Mind you i went there with a date and she was a bit shocked and bothered by the fact of the implication that i would have stolen silverware that i can purchase from any target, walmart or kmart at that.

2021-09-12Nice staff. We sat outside, ordered boys had the kids steak and grilled cheese. I ordered the whiskey ribeye. It was great especially the butter they put on top. Dropped a star because I ordered my steak rare and it came out medium well.

2022-06-05Great bar on Main St. In Beacon NY. Went last night and it was great, has the low key dive bar feel, but without the drama. The bartender Lindsey was great, welcoming and good at her job. They had a young lady singing tunes last night and she was awesome. The prices are average, the drinks are well poured. On my way out I met the owner Richard, and what a kind grateful man. He introduced himself and we talked about Pizza shops around where I used to live. Great place folks. Definitely a spot yo hit up if youre in the Beacon area and want some drinks, cool atmosphere, amazing staff and to be honest an all around great place. 5 ⭐️ place for sure. I will be heading back, unfortunately for peoples ears it will be on Kareoke night (Thursdays) 🤣

2022-06-04This place is just a collection of rock star people. Rich is awesome and really cares about the experience. The bartenders are nice, honest, and sincere. The Guinness is excellent. And the wings are exceptional. The live music was great (Chris Raabe, look him up). The trivia night was legit. Real questions cleverly posed and good humor in it. And the regulars... well... I will be friends with some of them for the rest of my life.

2022-02-23Loved it. In an historic building, brick walls, tin ceiling, vintage bar - had a cool, hippie vibe. Food very good, pulled pork best I ever had. Fun place for casual dining.

2022-05-29Definitely feels like a beer/wine place, simple and charmingly divey, but DO NOT overlook the cocktails. They are made with love and totally S.L.A.P.

2019-08-05Great spot to grab a beer (two local IPAs on tap, plus whatever else you’d want). It’s a classic joint, half-sports bar, half-classic rock vibe, so enough for everyone. Straightforward American menu done well. Nice story and history (read the back of the menu), established 1921, captures the character of the community’s old school vibe, no fuss service and friendly faces asking if things are good.

2019-09-19Great food and great selection of drinks at Maxs. Lots of stuff on Main in this revitalized town, and Maxs is superb. Very personable owners who will be certain not to be strangers. Genuinely great people, and great times to be had here. Be certain to stop by. 5 stars hands down.

2020-10-18First time at Max’s. This open faced turkey sandwich was so good. Pics can’t even do it justice. The owner and staff are really friendly and the drinks are strong.
