Beautifully manicured sprawled outdoor museum. So much to see but lack of shade and adequate water station made our day too hot to enjoy. Great place for a family trip or if you are riding solo. Bring water and comfy shoes to enjoy the walk. Better yet, rent a bike, pack a picnic and look for a comfy tree to shade under. We will definitely come back when the weather is more kind.
What a cool place. 500 acres of relaxing scenery with sculptures randomly placed. It took several hours to walk all the paths. They ran out of maps so make sure you print one before going just in case. Next time I’ll rent a cart and driver and just enjoy the place without so much walking. Lots of rolling hills. A good time regardless!
Simply a great place to spend the day. Why do I like coming here? Its a huge 500-acre outdoor museum on beautifully maintained grounds with unique sculptures that dot the landscape. They blend seamlessly with the hills, meadows and forests of the area. Its a relaxing and peaceful place where you can just enjoy the views, art sculptures and the outdoors.Since the property is so large with all that space, theres a lot to explore and never really seems crowded. (Part of the charm) You can take the tram, rent a bike or just take your time walking the grounds. The Fall and Spring are the best times to visit with foliage or when the plant life comes into bloom. However, the Winter has its own unique character when everything is covered in snow and ice. Have always been impressed with how well manicured the landscape and grounds are. They enhance the large contemporary sculptures all over the area. Great experience every time Ive come here.
Such an interesting place, and one of three largest sculptural art centers in the world. The audio tour goes along great so be sure to do that before your adventure. Gorgeous scenery with amazing art. Definitely worth the visit, and dont even realize youre getting in miles of walking too. I did 4 miles!
They seem to have made COVID even more complicated than it needs to be. Booking tickets with a local library pass is just silly. No one answers the phone. It’s best to write an email. The parking is highly managed, probably with good intentions but it means everyone is in the same area at the same time. Masking is not enforced even indoors. Why don’t they insist on vaccination cards & enforce masking? Easier & safer.
What a special place this is. Pro tip: check your local library to see if they have free passes that you can check out.Storm King is huge but there is a shuttle/tram that you can get on near the parking lot which does an entire circuit around the property. I highly recommend doing that first and then you can decide if/what you want to go back and see up close. We also ate at the cafe there (all outdoor seating) and the food was yummy and not too expensive.
This place was just phenomenal. Very organized, lots of staff to help with parking and information. It was completely seamless. The sculptures were phenomenal. Every one made me think. Here are a few tips, though. Were comfortable shoes. Bring lots of water and snacks. Consider bug spray because early in the day there were a lot of gnats around. Plan to spend as much time as you can because this place is huge. But also plan to come back because its a lot too see in one day.
Great place to hang out all day to walk around to see art or do picnic. It is pretty huge place, so one day is not enough to see all. If you wanna see every single art installations, you probably need one whole day, otherwise, you can check out main ones if you have half day. Some additional info:- They have picnic tables close to parking lot- East parking is small but it is in the middle of Art center. You can check out some major art installations on the way to parking lot,so if you would like to minimize walking, that is the parking you wanna use :)- They have a small cafe, but recommend to bring food and also a water bottle.- Get ready to be under sun all day
We enjoyed the sculptures and our visit overall. If youre planning a visit, I hope you find the info below useful:1. Timed-entry tickets must be booked in advance via their website. No tickets sold on-site. We arrived 15 minutes before our chosen entry time and they let us in without problems.2. The outdoor space is huge and requires a lot of walking. Were in relatively good shape but it still took us two hours to see everything. The terrain is not completely flat and is muddy in places. The tram and rental bikes were not available during our visit (they dont allow visitors to bring their own bikes). Call ahead to inquire whats available on the day of your visit. And since youll be outdoors, its always a good idea to check weather conditions before arriving.3. Restrooms are few and far between. The one closest to our parking lot was a portable toilet that we didnt feel comfortable using.4. Bring your own food and drinks. The food stalls were not open during our visit.
This is a wonderful place to walk around in nature and see large installations in a natural setting in a way that you wouldnt be able to in most other places. It really allows you to see the pieces at a distance which changes the entire perspective. Do expect to walk a fair amount, and while most of the trails are not difficult, some of the grounds are a fair effort.
It is HUGE! Massive 500 acre land with large scale sculptures scattered at every sight. Even in a rainy day, there were still lots of visitors. But because of the size, you would not feel crowded. The exhibitions were super cool. Especially we like to enjoy them in the nature. So relaxing, so refreshing. Will come back in the fall. It must be beautiful with the fall foliage.
A huge utterly peaceful, 400 or so acres with hills, streams, woods, meadows of wild flowers, swaths of green, with a wonderful collection of outdoor art installations that blend into the rolling hills and valleys, or stand starkly against the sky atop those hills. You should go there;)
A must visit site. So peaceful and serene to walk around an experience such beauty. The way the land has been preserved makes the artwork feel almost natural in its appearance. I could easily have spent the whole day exploring, but for the fast walkers you can accomplish this in a couple hours. You can rent bikes in the art center that would also be fun. All in all a location that we stumbled upon by a random recommendation, but if youre not visiting youre really missing out.A fun experience for all ages!
Poppin. Came here and we picked the right day. Gotta make a reservation. Bring some snacks cuz there’s a lot of walking. Def worth bringing some “special” provisions if that’s your kinda thing. Lots of places to space out. Immaculately landscaped. Apparently there’s a shuttle bus from beacon which you can get to via metro north/Amtrak. Skipped on the bike rentals but maybe a Lil fomo.
Wear your most comfortable walking shoes! I visited Storm King for the second time last weekend. My first visit was in October/November 2020 on a cold, rainy day. This second visit was on a hot summer day. I wish they opened before 10:00am because the grounds were already very warm. Storm King is a huge place and you can generally avoid the crowds during your visit. The picnic areas were a little busy though. Highly recommend bringing your own food and having a picnic. There are tons of tables and spots in the shade. An enjoyable experience at Storm King is all about being prepared. Be prepared to walk! Be prepared to be outside (dress appropriately, sunscreen, etc). Bring a water bottle, there are lots of places to refill.
Nice for kids, food extremely overprice food paid 4 dollars for one dry cookie, recommend bringing your own food. very nice for walking and for kids to explore and have fun. storm king art center has a lot of walking so if you aren’t into that i wouldn’t recommend coming. many different sculptures but there’s not much information on them when you go up to its labor it just says the name and who made it. good place for class trip
500 acres of sculptures, some small, some gigantic, done by many famous artists. Worth the trip. Wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing appropriate for the temperature. There is a shuttle that will run around the park stopping at the major parking lots and 6 stops altogether that will get you near the major installations. Some walking will still be required.
Nature and art are delightfully combined in this vast sculpture park. You can easily spend a day here walking around the different terrains and works. Kids can run around freely and will probably find some works interesting. Other than the trees there is minimal shade so come prepared. There are several restrooms scattered but fewer water refill spots. The coffee store is open and you can order online or at the counter. Prices are on the high end as one might expect. Picnic tables are available. The museum building is still closed. Getting here from NYC is possible via car, bus or train. See their website for tickets and details. We took the Shortline bus from port authority. Make sure you print 2 copies of your tickets(!). Boarding was a little confusing and double check the return time with the driver.
A great place to people watch and observe the installations, which can be appreciated from a distance just as well as up close. Many of them are abstract and simple while others will really play with perspective. The grounds are well maintained so its an easy walk to any part...basically, a nice day could be spent here being outdoors with some low maintenance recreational activity.
So much to see! Nice to hear and read the art explanations/history in the app. Make sure to download it beforehand. Very nice as a place for a long walk, bike ride, and theres quite a few spots where you can set up for a nice picnic. Also be sure to take water and stay hydrated as everything is outside and wear a hat or carry an umbrella for shade. Dont expect much refuge in the museum building as they dont keep the AC on, just floor fans (I assume to protect the art).
If you like the art that’s cool, I won’t speak too much on it. It’s a very nice place to enjoy the weather and sightsee. There’s plenty of birds to see, as well as turtles and geese. I went on a weekday when there weren’t too many people. The ticket was a little expensive IMO, as well as the price to rent a bicycle for 2hrs ($30). Overall it’s a nice place to visit!
Storm King is an expansive sculpture park covering 500 acres with large-scale works by Mark di Suvero, Alexander Calder, Zhang Huan, Roy Lichtenstein, Maya Lin, and many others. The site marks an important milestone in environmental history as the case study that established protections for sites of “aesthetic or recreational value.
Overrated place. I really really really dont know why this place has 4.5 more stars. The park is too big to walk and you walk for a long time to see a statue. Although they have public tram running in the park. It is still not convenient. Also, the road in the park is awful, lots of small rocks, and you can hear horrible sound that rocks try to hit your car paint. If you love your car, especially low car, please dont come here.Overprice $23/per person. I would not come here anymore and would not suggest my friend.
Be prepared walk if you want experience the artwork close up. They do have a tram that circles the park which makes it easier on seniors and handicap. There is a bike rental area. A little expensive for the experience but looks like they have alot of maintenance and up keep. Better in the fall.
Pretty scenery, nice walk, lots of flat paths. Wear a hat and put on sunscreen because most of the Walk is in direct sunlight. The one thing I did not like was the cafe did not have much of what they listed online. They admitted that the online menu had a lot more than what they actually had. In addition near the cafe are portapoties, the only real bathroom is near the art museum itself.

The site spans approximately 500 acres.Widely celebrated as one of the worlds leading sculpture parks, Storm King Art Center has welcomed visitors from across the globe for fifty years.Where its pristine 500-acre landscape of fields, hills, and woodlands provides the setting for a collection of more than 100 carefully sited sculptures created by some of the most acclaimed artists of our time.Highly recommended to whole family and friends, you may need about 2-5 hours to cover what Storm King Art Center have to offer, do call in advance as different seasonal options changes!
Amazing place and you would probably enjoy more if you went during spring or summer when the snow has melted. Even though I dont know much about art and architecture I simply loved the area, the view and the walk.A must visit if youre down for some stroll in an open space and love sunlight
Nice and peaceful place. The art is interesting and its nice that its spread out over the entire area. You could spend several hours here easily. I suggest packing your own lunch and a blanket to sit in the many open areas or under a tree if its sunny. The cafe has the typical museum sandwiches and hotdogs that are pricey. Also try to come earlier as it does get crowded later in the day.
I wished I found out about this place years ago!The sculptures are gigantic, simply breathtaking!I love how they have the grounds landscaped to compliment the sculptures!I was there all day & still did not cover the entire grounds. Planning to go back in another week - Im sure the Autumn foliage will make a perfect boarder for the artwork!
Always love going here but was curious how they were handling things with the pandemic. They were extremely cautious and even with timed ticketing, there was a delay in letting cars come into the park. Once going in, it was easy to find parking and you can tell immediately that they have extremely limited attendance because no matter where you were, it was extremely empty and rare. Feels like you get to enjoy the place all to yourself. Tried the take out lunch boxes that were really delicious and the picnic areas were extremely clean and safe with proper spacing between chairs. Highly recommend to purchase your tickets several days in advance if going on a weekday and as soon as possible if planning to go on weekends. They are currently all sold out for weekends in September. Safe place to enjoy fresh air and lovely sculptures. ☺️
Storm King Art Center, commonly referred to as Storm King and named after its proximity to Storm King Mountain, is an open-air museum located in Mountainville, New York. It contains what is perhaps the largest collection of contemporary outdoor sculptures in the United States. Founded in 1960 by Ralph E. Ogden as a museum for Hudson River School paintings, it soon evolved into a major sculpture venue with works from some of the most acclaimed artists of the 20th century. The site spans approximately 500 acres (200 ha; 0.78 sq mi), and is located about a one-hour drive north of Manhattan.
We had an awesome experience at Storm King. Bring some good sneakers, and plenty of snacks/water. You will be walking a lot! Beautiful valley area with interesting art and sculptures spread throughout. I recommend coming early and spending all day there if you can, there is just so much to see. We walked almost 9 miles all day. Outside food and drink are allowed onsite which is nice. Bathroom facilities are dotted throughout the grounds. I would definitely come back. If you’re looking for a variety of artwork though, this might not be the place for you. Pretty much all the pieces are abstract/industrial/architectural.
Storm King is fabulous. That said, some advice. Comfy shoes! A picnic lunch. Youll be outdoors almost the entire time, so try to come in nice weather, which can get tricky, since entry is by reserved timed passes. Pretend you are going hiking, so you will bring what you need to walk the grounds. Come as early as possible, since it really is a full day. But maybe dont wait until closing time to leave, because the local roads cant handle heavy traffic. Very similar to Glenstone in Potomac, Maryland, but Glenstone has much more to do indoors and less to do outdoors.
Might have enjoyed this incredibly huge sculpture garden park if it wasnt wet and rainy out. Bring good shoes and water, and be prepared to walk a lot if you hope to see more than just a few sculptures! Typically the Maya Lin Wavefield is interactive and you can run up and down the slopes (incredible fun especially for kids) but because of weather conditions no one was allowed on the field.
I had wanted to go here for years, had high expectations, and it did not disappoint. Beautifully curated- the sculptures change as you move through the landscape and see them from different perspectives. Spent 4 hours here and that felt about right to see everything. Wear good walking shoes and pack a picnic. I can’t wait to go again.
What a place! Id live here in a small shed if I could. It is beautiful! We had the benefit of witnessing a wedding on the premise when we came and it was such a majestic and beautiful event. This combines environmental conservation and art in one cohesive environment. Beautiful place, will plan on going every year. If we were closer we would certainly become members. Beats the heck out of botanic gardens.
With social distancing in place and timed tickets, theres plenty of room to walk around and enjoy the park at your own pace. Weekend tickets sell out early, though, so plan ahead if you want to go on Saturday or Sunday. Some of the hills are tough with a stroller, but if youve got an off road friendly one, youll be fine. A beautiful place that Im happy to support with my patronage.
I love love love this place. It’s definitely worth planning a full day there. Bring a nice lunch and picnic under the art. There are permanent exhibits as well as new ones every season. Storm king is great for family days, dates, friends outings or even a solo day.I HIGHLY recommend this place and will 110% be going back.
The quiet place for the Covid outing.Very well maintained 500 + acre field with not too many but good amount of gigantic wood and metal arts. This is super big open area and you have to lots of walking but its not boring.Once you enter go to main area straight away from the parking instead of taking the corner steep trekking. You may get tired once you reach the main paved sculptures area.Due to covid the entry is limited. You need to book in advance. Please go ahead. You wont regret it. People ideally spent around 2-3 years. Due to crowd restrictions, you feel like you are alone walking in the big open area. Lots of nice photos can be taken.Food is allowed. Pack your foods. No restaurant is available. Only vending machine available near parking and central of the art center.
The place is really far from the city but youd find some crazy design elements here. Could spend the entire day if you love to study the designs. It has a path of around 2 miles which could be walked down. Has both the options, tram and rent-a-bike. I rented a bike for like 24 bucks for two hours and thats not a cheap deal. Place has lot of scenic views so definitely a spot for picnic. Pets and smoking not permitted. Not much options for food available so get your meal packed along. Apart, great artworks.
A perfect outdoor experience with rolling hills, calming greens, quirky and sometimes weird art, and heavy duty walking. Some of the popular and interesting exhibits include the hanging/suspended block, three-legged Buddha, dancing poles, wave lawn, and the mirror fence.
I recommend getting there early! Don’t forget your student ID, the discount really makes a difference. There aren’t any vegan options at the cafes; during this time it’s apple cider, cookies, chicken sandwiches and honey candies. Great way to spend the day though. Some of the exhibits have a great attention to detail. Great trails, nothing too difficult to spend the day walking around. Will def return in the summer with a prepared picnic set up. Lots of space to lay out, lounge and snack.
I’ve been wanting to go to Storm King ever since I heard about it so we ended up going for my birthday. We did the advance purchase offsite parking which gives you a $5 Per person discount off admission. There was a shuttle immediately available on the trip there. On the way back we waited 15 minutes for the shuttle. They could use some benches at the lot you wait at, but for $20 off admission, this was definitely worth doing.Well maintained trails, stunning larger than life artwork, all within a breathtaking natural landscape. Inside galleries also worth seeing. Gift shop was so incredibly small and crowded, I had to leave before buying anything. Got snacks at cafe cart: cookies, chips and a scone. The baked goods were tasty and reasonably priced. We only saw about half of the exhibits in the several hours we were there. It’s definitely either a 2 day trip or spending open to close there and walking a ton in one day. I’m hoping to come back sometime soon and see the rest. It was a memorable experience!
A little pricey but go on a nice Autumn day and its worth it. numerous large sculptures, great opportunities for photography. Can be able to walking but there is sort of a shuttle thats freethat will either take you around and give you a little tour or allow people to stop and get on and get off so you can use it as a little trolley around the place. there are food places at the central complex but they are limited menu and not very cheap. I believe youre allowed to do your own picnic in certain parts of the place though.
Absolutely beautiful city escape that is perfect for a day trip. I’d highly recommend a visit especially in Fall when the leaves are changing. It’s full of large scale contemporary sculpture on rolling hills in a place that you could wander most of a day. Many of the sculptures make for great photo ops! I only wish there were more indoor spaces - most of the bathrooms throughout the park were outhouses and the only dining options were outside but it gets a little chilly in cooler weather to sit still. Would make sure you check the weather before visiting and only come on a sunny day!
Extraordinaire. This is the best outdoors art collection I had ever been. The place is breathtaking. The app to get details about the works is great. I walk for hours then took the tram which was absolutely amazing. I find that the team were very helpful and nice. Is a great place also to bring you things and do a picnic. I just think that is the best contribution for art or nature lovers to enjoy
This is my dream park: a spacious, well-kept nature preserve enchanted by monumental art sculptures. Theres a surprising range to the sculptured materials; lots of steel i-beams, but also fieldstone, rubber tires, and even the earth itself. We spent six hours walking the grounds and still didnt see everything. Great for family shutterbugs or students!
This place is AMAZING! My husband took me there for my birthday last year.Bikes:We rented bikes and rode all over the property. I believe this is absolutely the way to go, but beware - the landscape is made up of hills and valleys so a real work out for your legs!Art:The art installations are really worth seeing. It’s like acres and acres peppered with these massive, abstract, magical looking ‘Easter eggs’ everywhere!Nature:We went in the fall and the foliage was breathtaking! Sprawling hills and valleys with the crispness of autumn all around us!***this is also where he proposed!
Its a beautiful place. When you go, try to think of it less as an art museum and more as just a park. A park that has some extra sculptures and weird stuff! The sculptures are very unusual and interesting, but sometimes its just not the best fit for people. If you find yourself judging the sculptures, focus on how beautiful the space is - the fields, the water, the hills, the forest. It would be a great park even without the sculptures. Its a great place to bring kids too. Lots of space to run around and play, and lots of refreshing things to look at. My family and I took silly pictures in front of the sculptures and had fun guessing what their titles might be. Im adding a couple pictures of the park (but no pictures of the sculptures themselves though).
We used to love coming to this beautiful center. Our favorite part was the tram tours. We were really disappointed today...the trams had no tour guide... the tram was literally just transportation...why did you guys take the best part of the experience away?...Also, we had a family member in a wheel chair. After we parked the car by the tram stop #2, we asked a worker where we could catch a tram ( not knowing that the, stop was #2, right there by our car...!!) he directed us to go to stop #1 by the gray house...and elevators, the tram starts in 13 minutes...So, we pushed our dad in his wheel chair up that steeeeeep hill...sweated like horses... and arrived on time with the help of other passers by. We got on the tram, and the first stop was #2---right by our car... WHAT?! Why did that worker directed us to shlep up the hill...?He clearly saw that we had a disabled man with us...just a lazy dude...We are not coming back...
Amazing place. Its a bit pricey- they charge per person in the vehicle (as opposed to per car) but worth it. The space is so vast and wide - and it wonderful to walk from piece to piece. Even if you were to spend the whole day here you wouldnt see everything. Apart from the art sculptures, the scenery itself is a work of art. Just stunning. Autumn(fall) and spring are the best times to come here as there is not much shade and summer would probably be too unforgiving. You can come with blankets and a picnic and just chill for the day.
Nice, outdoor museum w lots of artworks. Personally, it wasnt possible to walk the whole place so the trams came in handy. They run through outstanding works. Also, bike rental is available.A great picnic spot. Do check the weather before going as it is more pleasant to walk around in sunny weather.
This is a great place to go if you want to get out of NYC and enjoy a change of scenery. Itsan awesome place to explore, have a pinic and enjoy the art sculptures.Due to the ongoing pandemic, if you want to visit, you would need to buy a ticket in advance. Tickets sell out quickly.
It is a beautiful place. A quick getaway from the city. Its take around one hour to reach Storm King Art Center from Manhattan. There is a mini bus ride in the center. I would suggest you to visit the art center during fall or spring. The color of the leaves change. Its gorgeous 😍. Although I have seen, people go there during winters too.
If you havent done yourself the favor of going to the Storm King sculpture garden, autumn is the perfect time. Fortunate enough to have the day off to go during the week, my experience of wandering the luscious and meticulously kept grounds was heightened by the stunning sculpture, over 100+ pieces in all seamlessly integrated into the landscape.Bring your own food and drinks, they have beautiful picnic areas and I made the oversight of not bringing my own eats which resulted in me having to spend amply on limited options. The coffee and food were delicious, but had I known that there wouldnt be more offerings I would have come better prepared. But to the main reason you come, the sculpture! Drawing on an eloquently and well curated body of works from many of the most well-recognized artists in the world, think Calder, Smith, and Serra to name a few, there are surprises around every corner. Whether hidden in private pockets of the woods or out in cant-miss full view, it is one lovely thought provoking piece after another.I enjoyed hunting down different pieces and found the layout orchestrated marvelously to really showcase the works. Going during the week will insure more privacy. Throughout our 4+ hour excursion we repeatedly had sculpture to ourselves which I imagine will never happen on a weekend. No matter though, the user friendly layout and open space serve to provide all visitors a unique and private viewing experience. Highly recommended.
Definitely a gorgeous location to check out. Sculptures are all different and some are humongous while others are rather small.Went on a cold windy November morning on a Thursday, not crowded at all and enjoyable. Bathrooms are insulated from the elements and the park is really well maintained.Price to get in: $18 for adults, kids-18 or students with id $8. Well worth for the views and because its nearby. Predict about two hours or more to spend there.
Such a fun && busy day at Storm King! If you’re looking for something outside the box this is the place to go! 500 acres of beautifully manicured fields && amazing sculptures everywhere you look! Children under 4 are free. Adults $18, senior citizen discounts. Ample amount of parking. Bike rentals available ( come early ). Tram car that drives around the park which is great for a nice break from walking as well as some information along the way about the area and sculptures. There is a store / indoor museum which is great for a break from the sun. Great place to pack a lunch, blanket && cold beverages- sit down under a tree for lunch and enjoy the scenic views and fresh air! I came with my 3 year old nephew and he enjoyed running around the open fields, checking out the massive works of art & riding the tram ( aka train LOL ). We spent about 2.5 hours here and saw about 1/4 of the park. You could certainly get the entire park done in a day but I would suggest coming early in the morning vs mid day!!
All modern art without much marked information at the art installations. The app available is clumsy and not user friendly -especially the map feature.Had I known bikes were allowed I might have brought my own which would be useful because its a pretty sprawling area. There is bike rental available
GREAT place for a date or family outing! My boyfriend took me here for my birthday the other day and it was a fantastic experience. We spent about 4.5 hours there and were able to see a lot of the sculptures and picnic as well. Dont expect to be able to see everything in one day, though! The climate change exhibition was so cool. Its a great place to go when the weather is nice, but make sure to pack lots of water because it gets hot walking around and up and down the hills. There is also an option to ride around on the tram and be part of a tour. Make sure to bring your student I.D. if you have one - the price is much cheaper that way.
Wide open spaces, stunningly huge sculptures dotting the landscape - and creating it- and little discoveries hidden all around. The tram makes it easy to cover the large grounds, or rent a bike - keep in mind scooters and personal bikes are not allowed. If you have kids, ask for the guide at entry or grab one at the museum store- they are free and help children understand and appreciate the art and expanse of StormKing. Most of the art is do not touch but with the huge expanse of fields and trails this is really not a difficult thing for kids - but you can easily find the interactive exhibits on the map.
This experience isn’t for the person who gets tired easily. In order to truly enjoy this outside museum, you have to come prepare to walk the property & explore. Wear comfortable shoe, as that is key & stay hydrated. I had a great day being in the outdoor during the pandemic
Spacious open air museum an hour away from New York City. Many famous artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Alexander Liebermann or Richard Serra have published some sculptures there. One should be able to walk well. Otherwise there is a bus every few minutes who then stops in front of the sculptures.
Get ready to burn some calories! If you are ready for some serious walking, put on your sneakers and head here. Definitely, bring a stroller for your child because this place is huge. Although, some paths it would seem too hard to push a stroller. You can definitely get a great nature day here. I would have loved if they had more real bathrooms, food opportunities, and things to do mixed into this, but you are really one with nature here. Bring picnic supplies and pack food because this place does not have great options for that, but is a fun, unique experience!
Beautiful setting with extensive large scale art installations. Provoking. Be prepared to walk. Bring water. Currently the trolley and bike rental service arent available. Could use more strategically placed benches. Goldsworthy, Lin and di Suvero are pictured. I think di Suvero is overly represented.
So I have been trying to go to this unique place for a while & finally got the chance to go. Let me give you the pros:1- Wide open space for kids to run around. 2- Great experience of the outdoors & chance to get fresh air. 3- Picnic areas. 4- Parking is included in the ticket. 5- Some Monuments/Sculptures are interesting & unique. 6- A trolly goes around for people that need a break or cant walk too much.Cons: 1- A bit overrated imo (i am not that artsy). I wasnt impressed by the sculptures.2- Bugs are ridiculously. I know its the outdoors but if you have to wave your hand every 10 seconds... That is annoying.3- Their food is terrible & expensive. I highly recommend bringing your own food!!4- Not enough bathrooms.Overall I think it is an interesting place to visit. I probably wouldnt go back, as to me its not worth the price.
A great day trip so long as the weather isnt too wet/damp. Youll want to bring plenty of snacks and drinks because the food offering is slim and pricey. Comfortable shoes required cause it can get muddy quickly. Arrive early if you want those solo sculpture shots. Get that content!
You really got to be a fan of modern sculpture to fully appreciate the variety of art. I am not but I went with two of my friends who are which made this trip a bit more interesting. However, the park is huge and I would highly recommend bringing a bike especially if you come with kids. Also, dont forget lots of water. Since there is only one place to get it there it will be annoying to walk back when you need more. A gallon for a family of 4!
Amazing place! Highly recommend going in the fall when the leaves are turning. HUGE outdoor sculpture garden with beautiful landscape as far as the eye can see. I would recommend bringing your own lunch as the only place to eat wasnt all that great. Otherwise, an incredible experience and a must see!
We love going to Storm King Art Center and here’s some GREAT NEWS, they have reopened! However you need to reserve your visits in advance and they are limiting the number of visitors to 300 a day. When we made our reservation, we needed to address how many people would be in our car and since we were planning to bring a friend, we paid for three people in advance. Our time we picked to arrive was set for 1:00. The beauty of this system is that when we were at Storm King, we felt like we were the only ones there! My advice is go to their website and book a few different dates just in case the day you intended to go turns out to have inclement weather. Many dates were sold out so you might end up gambling that it will be a nice day. If you arrive early, the town of Cornwall is lovely and it’s a peaceful pIace to walk around and get coffee or ice cream. There are also some restaurants that might be worth checking out. If you have never gone to Storm King Art Center, you’ll be in for a wonderful experience. The art work and sculptures are mesmerizing and it might be the most spiritually uplifting gift you can give yourselves.
I was visiting the area for just a few days and happened young Storm King. What a place! I wish I had more time and rented a bike to get around. Needless to say I did a lot of walking and took the tour which was helpful in targeting my treks to the different sculptures. It’s a perfect place to bring a picnic. Can’t wait to visit again.
Its a cool place with beautiful grounds, however the staff is extremely unhelpful and it is very easy to get lost. I would strongly recommend to pack some bug spray, it got pretty buggy near the trees. It was a fun experience overall but not worth the price of admission in my humble opinion.
Enjoyed the art (almost all of which is very modern and abstract) but bear in mind that each piece is far away from the next. (I had anticipated this, but they were even farther apart than I had imagined. There is an intermittent tram that covers areas of the park, and bikes are available for rent.) They give you a map but I found it a bit hard to follow since many of the sculptures were in the middle of fields or bits of forest and you have to walk of the paths to get to them. Often I found myself wandering to a completely different path, just from going towards sculptures. Still, the hills provide nice views of the park and overall I enjoyed my visit.
Nice place for a relaxing day in the country. Its a sculpture park in the midst of nature and its massive. I dont think Ive ever walked it all in one day. The sculptures are mind blowing. Its extremely well kept and managed, with nice picnic areas, trams to hop on if you get tired, a cafe, coffee carts and gift shops. Staff are all over the park ready to help and guide you if you need. There are bicycle rentals (kind of steep on the rental price though especially after admission $). Its family friendly with lots for adults also. Nice flat walking paths, but you can also cut across hilly fields for a fun trek. No pets allowed.
It was a little bit cold in November but still have chance to see the gold color. The visitors should take a look forecast before visiting, the weather changed a lot in the day..... (sunny and snowing could happened at same day.)However, storm king is a very good place to catch the tail of fall with friend and family! Many creative sculpture and interesting special exhibitions worth to see.
Open air modern sculpture garden over what must be 75 acres or more, we rented bicycles and rode through fields, woods and along the water. And we found a food truck with delicious tacos when we were hungry. Lots of visitors brought a picnic.A brilliant day out from NYC (train from Grand Central to Beacon runs along the Hudson River almost the entire way)
Storm King Art Center is an amazing place. At $18 dollars per person, the expansive site features many landscaped areas & art installations. Beverages & food options seemed limited outside of a food truck that may not be there on a less busy day. We spent about 5 hours there and didnt get to check out everything. Wed come back in a heartbeat!
Storm King Art Center is the best. Large property to explore with family or friends. Great place to escape to from the city. Many sculptures and art throughout. Sometimes it’s very busy and other times it can be quiet. Make sure to bring a blanket and pack a picnic as there are many nice trees to lay under.
Feels and looks like a futuristic utopia. It will take you 3-4 hours to walk around the grounds. You can buy food from their cafe and put a blanket anywhere to chill out if you want. You can only drink beer you buy in the small area next to the cafe, so if you’re packing beer/wine then you should drink it in non-descript containers. They also have a no-dog policy.
Storm King Art Center is an amazing place! I visited for the first time 9/2/20 and Im already looking forward to my next visit. Wear comfortable shoes as you will do a lot of walking, but the landscape and magnificent art will maintain your wanderlust! Download the map on the centers website as the store and indoor gallery are currently closed. If you like art and the great outdoors you will love Storm King!
What a gorgeous place! Filled with meandering paths, natural beauty, and gigantic, funky art pieces. It is a wonderful way to spend a few hours or all day if you have to stamina to walk that long. Pack a lunch to eat in the picnic tables or rent one of their bicycles to tour the grounds. So worth the drive!
Ive always wanted to visit Storm King but in the past scheduling hasnt worked out. One weekend morning, I made it to the street leading to the entrance but traffic was at a standstill so I turned around and went home. I was finally able to visit last week. After reopening during COVID, they started reservation-only visiting which worked exceptionally well. You go online and book an hour-window to arrive. You pay for the amount of people in your car...$20 for single...$30+ for two people...etc... They warn not to arrive before your alotted time. I arrived at 10:10 for my 10-11 AM Wednesday reservation. You first enter a smaller parking that loops you around to a staff member who scans your ticket through your window...then you are directed to the main lot. Masks are required anywhere you cant social distance and this place is huge so...its pretty impossible not to social distance. I think the liited reservation system helps greatly also. Kudos to the Art Center for implementing such a system. There are bathrooms near the parkng lots as well as some vending machines which sells drinks, snacks and even t shirts. There is hand sanitizer near all of the bathroom (port a potty) stations. The Art Center is massive with lots to see. There are sculptures of all types and sizes. Make sure you read each plaque, located near each sculpture to see the name of the sculpture, artist and other information. Be sure to take a map and plan out your path. I am a fairly fast walker and was able to see 90% of the sculptures in about 3 hours taking over 15,000 steps. The terrain there is a mixture of paved paths and grassy/dirt areas. You will need to venture onto the grass/dirt to see some of the sculptures. Some areas are very hilly so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Also, be mind ful of the bugs...though not overwhelming, they are noticeable, especially in the grassy/tree areas. There were a few benches near the parking lot but no other common areas where you can eat unless you pick a spot of the grass. There is a visitors center that is currently closed due to COVID. I highly recommend this place to everyone. Lots to see and you can easily spend a day there.
Its a nice place to stop by in the fall. Particularly in the fall because of the beautiful fall foliage. You have art pieces/sculptures that are a sight to see. I would definately recommend song the place, at least once. Its a great for a date, for sight seeing with friends, or for families with kids. The price was only $15. Parking is available after you pay. There are ushers wholl direct you to the parking spaces. Carry snacks, you can make a picnic day out of it. I wish we knew. Alternatively, they have a stop station inside that serves beverages and snacks that you can stop by after your walk. Only thing is the line is long but fast. They serve around lunch hr then close promptly around 3 or 4. One con: the pottys for relieving yourself are not greatest. At around 12 seemed like the peak time & there was a long queue of cars trying to get in, so shoot for sometime before noon or earlier. Have your camera. I only took these pics with my phone.
This is a rare treasure for those who appreciate art, nature and exercise. Storm Kings 500+ acres will provide you with a uniquely satisfying experience that changes with the seasons and the time of day. Viewing sculptures by Andy Goldsworthy, Mark di Suvero, Roy Lichtenstein, Alexander Calder, Isamu Noguchi, Maya Lin in a natural landscape amidst the meadows, streams, ponds and woods of the art center is therapeutic to say the least. As the seasons change and the light changes so does the entire experience of visiting this outdoor sanctuary. It never seems to feel the same, and never looks the same. The scale is epic at times and the synergy between any sculptures placement and its setting complement one another gracefully. For photographers, Storm King is a haven that has a seemingly endless array of stunning vantage points. Bird lovers too will find plenty to see. If youre looking for an escape alone or with the family, it should be on your short list.
Our annual visit is always around the end of September or early October. We look forward to visiting the wave hill, but this year it was closed due to a recent storm. Nevertheless, our family enjoyed the installations and roamed the grounds for some fall colors and creative art.
It was a beautiful fall day. The art is interesting and thoughtful. We visited during covid so public buildings were closed. There were porta potties for restroom and there was some sort of food pick up station which we did not try. Also due to the heavy volume of visitors we had to park off-site and be shuttled there. Not sure that that was exactly necessary. There are not enough Maps or information to help you decide how to navigate the expansive property. Art installations are randomly placed over Acres of property. Put on your walking shoes as you will be doing a lot of it and make sure you go on a nice day
Outstanding collection of giant environmental sculptures by renowned artists such as George Rickey, Alexander Calder, Alexander Liberman, Richard Serra... all sparsed in a splendid 500 acres outdoor museum. The Storm King Art Center is well managed and offers outstanding series of events for both members and donnors separately. They have weekly programs for children, an outdoor cafe, picnic tables, cafe carts, and much more. You can text STORM to 56512 to access Storm Kings audio guide. However they offer daily walking tours as well.
Great place to take the family for an outdoor activity. Be prepared to walk a lot, so get your scooters if you need them. They do have bikes for rent (you cannot bring your own). It was a bit hot for us in late May, so be prepared with plenty of water and sunscreen. The food was ok and they do have beer, but only in one of the shops, so bring your own. The museum was less than stellar, so you can skip it. Overall, good family fun.
Great experience in general, but has potential for improvement. What I like about a museum is the story behind the art. It fancies with a text message that needs to be send to a number but this doesn’t work for phone no’s outside US apparantly... a simple offline story at the sculptures would be nicer. (Since walking the park is highly recommended).Nevertheless in general a great museum to visit.
What a great place. Saw a picture on one of the Hudson River facebook group. And we decided on a day trip with our 2 kids. Lots of room to run in nature. And get some art... they have a way of describing things in the world of art thats entertaining. You can bike, sit relax, take a tour, they have a out door cafe.Overall would go again.
Its a gorgeous open air sculpture museum and a natural jewel of the Hudson Valley that is perfect for a day trip from NYC especially during foliage season. Go during the week if you can. You feel like you are alone with Nature. Very therapeutic! The best way, in my opinion is taking a bus out of Port Authority. You 2 options to purchase from: one package is the roundtrip bus fare, a stop at the popular shopping destination, Woodbury Commons and an admission to Storm King. The other, bus fare and museum admission. Thats the one we bought. The very first time we went to Storm King, we took Metro-North to Beacon and a cab from there to and from Storm King, but it was through lack of planning, very expensive on the cab fare, and I was nervous about the cab coming back. The museum is in the middle of Hudson Valley; not having a definitive plan of egress was unnerving. So buying a bus package out of NYCs Port Authority was very convenient. We came in at 11:45am and left at 5pm. Theres a cafe on the grounds, but you can bring your own food; having a picnic on a bench looking out at the glorious landscape felt so luxurious and peaceful.Storm King is gorgeous, and a place well be sure to return to.
I visited the Art center on the beginning of November which is more than I expected for the past peak of fall folliage. The landscape together with Sculptures are amazing, still stunning and colorful. I believe that this is the best time to visit the art center. However!!! Warning!! ##Our car got took by the toll!##Dont park your car on the road side before enter the art center. Stay on the line or traffic that line up for entering the main entrance. There have many parking spot inside the center just be patient and stay in the line. But they still need to post the warning sign that we cant park our car there!! A lot of people stuck there because their car got took too.Dont let this ruin your trip! So stay on the traffic line, you will pay the fee and get the parking spot inside. Also, You should prepare for picnic!! Its sure will be awesome :)
Storm King is a great place for a walk. The art is enhanced by the natural backdrop and the potential for wildlife sightings. I went for the second Winter Weekend opening in 2019. I saw evidence of turkeys as well as a bald eagle flying overhead. Im sure it would be worth going in every season.
A great way to spend the day with physical activity (e.g the long trails and walk paths....and the stream..the nature..etc) mixed with all the wonderful and thought provoking art pieces scattered across the land in one SHOT! Also, all the staff there are great and very helpful for navigational help👍
Great place to spend a free day walking around outside and seeing cool things. There is a great taco and quesadilla cart which is a bonus. The mirror fence and wave hills are highlights. It cost us 8 dollars a piece with a student ID.There was a bit of a traffic jam to get into Storm King but it passed by quickly enough and we were able to park efficiently.
There is no better place to spend a crisp Autumn day during peak foliage. Dont be deterred by the hoards who have the same idea: once you park (or get off the bus) there is plenty of room for all of you. Bask in the glory of monumental modern and contemporary sculpture amidst an elegantly landscaped and well maintained property. Hell, look around for birds (I saw no less than 5 Eastern Bluebirds there on my last visit). Just go, its worth it.
From the name I had thought we might be making pottery but I was very mistaken, this gorgeous open-air museum is definitely somewhere everyone should make sure to visit. The park is vast and if you are journeying from New York City bring a picnic lunch - 250+ acres offer more than enough spots to take in the works from more than 50 esteemed artists. Also, dont miss the trolly ride which goes on a loop around the art center!
Awesome place. Really worth the trip. Awesome plan recommended for spring or fall. Check ahead to see if its open the date you are planning to go.If youre traveling from NYC I would recommend renting a car among several friends. Also consider arriving early for discounted entrance fee.
Great park with loads of rich history and landscapes! Beautiful anytime of day, but I recommend the mornings! They have a great location for food, and they have also been introducing food trucks to the park. If you like to bike, note that you are not allowed to bring your own but rentals are available. They also offer many tours throughout the day.
Storm King is a very beautiful place, I would highly recommend paying it a visit. We rented bikes while we were there, which was kind of expensive but definitely gives you a greater understanding of the park- we literally got to see everything in one day. My one suggestion would be dress warm and bring snacks, especially if youre walking youll be in there a while if you wanna see everything. Also, just a heads up, you cant bring your own bike into the park.
Worth the hype. The entire sculpture grounds are well-maintained and well-mapped, though it’s not entirely necessary to follow any given directions. I spent about 3.5 hours there, which was enough to walk the entirety of the outer path and explore most of the pieces/buildings within. Be sure to get there early for their early bird pricing!
Perfect activity during Covid! Best time to go is during fall.Pro tip 1: if you cant get tickets to park on site, get the tickets for off-site parking and skip the line for the shuttle by Ubering to the entrance.Pro tip 2: pack a lunch + BYOB since their one restaurant can be pretty pricey for what you get.
We love storm king, great location to bring out of towners who tire of nyc. We try to arrive as early as possible to park near the gift shop. My tip is to always bring some food so you can picnic, to my knowledge there isn’t much around so bring what u need. I would also suggest bug spray. Trams available for those who have difficulty walking. Can be windy so bring a scarf.
Storm king art center is a place I keep coming back, always something new to see and the permanent installations never get old.The property is massive! Its like going for a long hike but with beautiful art to look at along the way.Great place to have a picnic and the nature around you.

2022-06-20Great experience for the family. Nice vibes all around. All the employees we spoke to were friendly. Sculptures from small to HUGE, even some interactive. Nice easy walk. There are some nice trail options as well or simply walk the open field to some amazing pieces. Two draw backs to Storm King: Only one indoor restroom area by the indoor museum (all others are port-a-potty). And the Cafe was expensive for very basic food. Neither ended up deterring us from any fun as we mapped out our walk to hit the museum right before lunch. Which we also brought our own food to picnic outside. Plenty of benches, tables, beautiful sights, walking space, bicycle rentals, a tram for easier transportation throughout the park. Just a great way for the family to combine a museum and a park visit in one outing.

2022-05-07Nice way to spend a day with family. Biking would have been a great way to see the whole park. Walked 3 miles and didnt see it all! Some uneven ground, hills, and distances would be a problem for anyone with mobility issues. Also, not much shade in some wide open areas. Overall, a beautiful setting with interesting pieces of art!

2021-12-06My friends and I have been taking road trips to sculpture parks all year, and Storm King did not disappoint. The grounds were wonderful to walk through on their own, and the art added an extra sense of beauty and enjoyment. I second reviewers saying to wear comfy shoes, its more like going for a casual hike with some inclines and walks through the woods. Make sure you also bundle up on cooler days; once the sun starts setting it gets chilly fast, but you dont want to leave before youve seen it all!

2022-06-26Storm King! Walk among massive, awe-inspiring, fine art creations crafted by contemporary artists from around the world. The juxtaposition of nature and materials like steel, bronze, and iron is a sight to behold. A tram ferries passengers around the grounds at designated stops or you’re welcome to hop off and walk at your own pace. Prepare to spend the day looking, wandering or just relaxing besides these extraordinary examples of large-scale visions come to life. A snack bar and vending machine(s) are near the “South” parking lot.

2022-06-08Nice helpful staff. Very large outdoor area with minimal shade in some areas. Bring good shoes, water and sunscreen! Make sure to reserve tickets for a entry timeslot. Refunds arent offered for ticket schedules on due to rainy days.

2021-10-05The beautifully maintained grounds are enough to bring me back here. The sculptures are pretty neat but you can just sit in one place and chill out for a couple hours with your lunch. When you arrive at the parking lot you might be concerned about crowds but the property is so large that you may in fact not even see other people depending on where you walk. I cant figure out what took me so long to visit this place.

2021-08-24Great sculpture park. It will be better to come here in Fall. Just too hot in summer. You can rent a bike, but the it’s not always easy to ride on a rugged terrain. There is an out door cafe where they have simple meals and drinks. Vending machines are your good friend. The best way to visit the park is driving. Prepare your own food and picnic in the beautiful landscape would be a great idea.

2021-10-21A great place to spend the afternoon. You can bring your own picnic. The food options are limited. A huge, beautiful property with places to hike in the woods as well as stay in open areas. Trams run constantly or you can rent bikes. Highly recommended. Awesome sculptures, some breath-taking.

2021-09-21Storm King Art Center is much more beautiful than I expected! The landscape is carefully crafted to accentuate the sculpture. It is by no means a piece of barren land strewed with sculptures. We happened to be there on a day with clear blue sky so the photos came out really nice. Besides the beautiful sculptures, we also love the wild flowers meadows and the rock garden display. We ran out of time so we didn’t get the chance to hike around the streams surrounding the landscape, which has uncovered significant archeological artifacts. The only downside is that it is a bit far from NYC and we ran into bad traffic on the way back. There are sufficient parking spaces. The space is huge. Set aside 5 hours to see all parts of it or you can rent a bike.

2021-10-19Storm King Art Center makes for a great day trip that isnt too far if you are visiting from NYC. It is a perfect getaway for couples, friends, or even alone to enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the many sculptures scattered around. The area is massive and clean - be prepared to walk a lot. Alternatively you can rely on the tram service which departs around 6 locations every hour. There are picnic tables around so definitely take advantage of those and bring your own water as the vending machines we found were empty of water. There are also water bottle refill stations scattered around. If you play Pokemon Go there are a few stops and gyms scattered around 😉Although there were a lot of people during our visit the place is very big so it never felt crowded. Only gripe is the poor refund policy as tickets are non-refundable and the place is open rain or shine.
