The Artist is a special place on City Island in the Bronx, and Elliot and Monica, the proprietors, very special people. Its a welcoming, inclusive and very familial space devoted to the creation and expression of art in whatever form. The Artist is a BYOB establishment that serves light fare. Be warned that traffic getting onto City Island can be a bit slow, but once past the entry bottleneck youre pretty much free and clear.

Best place to hear music, now upgraded to the best place to see it performed. Great desserts and coffee by Jenny’s Sweets. Elliot, Monica, Uncle Bill, Hannah, Josh, Ariel, Skylar, Jenn. An entire family to welcome you. Like hanging on the stoop in the Bronx.

Went to the open mic night on Halloween and had a great time. Very warm and comforable place. The food was good and the entertainment was better than I expected. Elliott and Monica love what they do; providing a venue to artists and the community. They are part of the fabric of City Island and Starving Artist Cafe is one of the treasures of the Island.

Eclectic, artsy atmosphere. My boyfriend and I went one night for music that a friend had told us about. The drinks and food were on the expensive side, but the music was really great. I felt kinda awkward because we were the youngest at the event and even more so when one of the musicians came over as they were taking a break and hinted condescendingly that it was odd we were there because we were so young. My boyfriend is 30! Im 27!

As a guest the Cafe on City Island is a true haven for the arts ,love and an all round groovy atmosphere. You never know who will be gracing the stage.Always a pleasant surprise. As a musician it has been my pleasure to preform there several time.Ellit and Monica treat us artist with the utmost respect.Elliot being an accomplished song writer and guitar teacher brings new talent to the fold for guidance.I could not imagine a world with out this musical artistic haven.

Starving Artist is a family-run studio/cafe/performance space; the sort of eclectic gem that can only survive in a small community like City Island. Open mic nights are as varied as the musicians and random characters (slam poets, stand-up comedians) that inhabit the Bronx and its environs. A night here is hit-or-miss entertainment, where the bombs can be every bit as fun as the standouts. You may end up cringing, heckling, or cheering, but if some zany fun and (occasionally great) live music is in your wheelhouse, youll find yourself coming back.
