Excellent food and service! Both the Waitress and Waiter were super nice and did a Great job in making me and my girlfriend feel welcomed. Love the environment too! Definitely recommend for a Date or even to go solo for some food. Got the Meatloaf and it was amazing, definitely will order again. And my girlfriend ordered the Chicken Penne Allá Vodka and she said it was Great! Loved it in every way! Will go again soon!
This place is awesome. So accommodating. Luna (our server) was out of this world. If shes not the owner she needs to be a partner at least. I gave 4 stars only because Id love to see more vegan/vegetarian/plant-based options. Even still this place is magical an Ill definitely return. Has me seriously considering moving to City Island.
Havent visited in years, actually decades, however this has always been a traditional place on the Island. As I remember, the cuisine was always exceptional. I do believe, that they have maintained their premier excellence of deliciousness.Perhaps, because would always visit, with friends, after sailing around the island on our boats, (mine christened the Deep Blue Princess), searching for the great Whale.Ages ago, all long gone, down to Davey Jones Locker, both boats and friends. We were enormously ravenous for a hearty feast, after a long hard day on the water, matey. And this place always delivered the hidden treasure.Postscript : Anyways as the old marnier saying goes, The second best day of your life is when you buy your first boat. But the absolutely best day, is when you sell her. 💙💜💙 Cheers Matey 🍺⚔
Always a fantastic place to dine in! Each year we make it a point to go, at least once for our anniversary. This year did not disappoint at all, in fact, exceeded my previous experiences. We had the special of the night: porterhouse steak and broiled tilapia with peach, new fav Ciderboys drink, and they made our night extra special for our ten year anniversary by providing us with a candle lit creme brulee with raspberry sauce. Service was impeccable, and Maurice was lovely to chat with and Ariane was very attentive. Thank you all for making our night extra special!!
Okay this restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and entertaining with nick and nacks throughout the entire restaurant. The wait staff is another story. They seemed to be in a time warp of sorts.. coming to check on my table in 20 minutes interval. It was difficult to enjoy the experience when as soon you look up your waiter is gone for another 20 minutes. Food is okay. Nothing to write home about. Although the chickpea/olive and toasted bread they serve on the house while you wait for your order is divine.
One of the absolute best restaurants Ive ever been to, and Ive been to Michelin star restaurants. How this place lacks one I do not know. Fantastic food, excellent wait times, quick service, and in the days of COVID, good safety procedures. Only complaint is I dont live right nextdoor to it.
I live in Florida and contacted The Black Whale Restaurant about getting a gift card for a friend of mine who was getting married and lives near there. I want to give a big thank you to Meg, Calliope, and anyone else involved in doing this for me. I truly appreciate it.
Took some friends for the Sunday brunch on City Island in the Bronx, which was absolutely delightful. Reasonably priced the buffet pretty much had more than I had hoped for. If it wasnt there, theyd make it for you. Everything was cooked perfectly. The staff is just as nice as could be and the atmosphere is kind of bohemian, antique-like. Street parking was easy. In the nice weather you can dine in their outside garden. Its really a very nice experience.
The appetizers were amazing (Clam chowder and shrimp potstickers). Dessert was also amazing (Id recommend the brownie Sunday). The service is awesome, everyone was friendly. They made us wait 20 minutes although the back was empty (and sat people who came in after us at the same time). The food was mediocre at best, the drinks were watered down. My salmon was raw (still cold and pink in the middle) so they comped my watery drink. I wouldnt go back if it were free.
Ive been coming to Black Whale for years and always recommend it. The food is amazing, service is exceptional. Its a great date spot, especially when its warm out and the outdoor area is open. I recently visited with a group of family and friends, commemorating my mothers life. I expected a few people to show up, which is what I told the staff at opening. However, over 40 friends and family showed up and the staff didnt miss a beat. Service was great and the food was Ive come to expect. The best Mussels! Thank you again to the amazing staff, truly made it special.
Friendly bunch with classic taste. I went to The Whale with family members who live on City Island, so the staff actually are friends. That could explain some of the friendliness that received.I had the cream of mushroom soup and it was packed with finely chopped mushrooms. The dish certainly seems homemade. Next, I had the brisket and cheese sandwich, which also had caramelized onions. The thick cut Texas toast finished off. The sandwich was moist and packed with flavor. The fries were cooked to perfection. Ultimately, a solid meal. I would have liked to see more veggies on the menu. My friend had the Artists Dinner, which had white beans and spinach, but after that youre looking at salad or a veggie burger.
Cozy and relaxing patio setting. The big problem: the wait staff is not on top of their game. The waiter was more interested in putting the chair cushions away for the night than getting our ice cream order correct. When the sundae arrived it was sparse and lacked the toppings that we ordered. The waiter gave us an excuse INSTEAD of an apology that they were closing, and ours was the last order. ...However, there were still several customers on the patio at.. 10:00.I always liked The Black Whale in my 58 years on this earth. I traveled from Yonkers just to be disappointed.Customers first...cushions second...after ALL the customers leave.Attention to detail and people will keep coming back.
Sunday Brunch. Cool place. Delightful outdoor patio- garden seating with a collection of nautical artifacts scattered about. The hot and cold brunch buffet had much to offer along with a waffle and omelet station in the garden. Staff very courteous and service very efficient. Will return.
It is a very unique restaurant. They have antiques on the wall. The back yard outside patio is beautiful. Especially when it starts getting dark, they put small tables candles and they have lights drapped across the back. The canopy from the tree in the back of beautiful. The food is amazing.the menu has a good variety to choose from
Very quaint dining experience set in a WW2 maritime motif. Dont expect the regular City Island fare of broiled lobster or king crab legs. This menu is tailored for a more exquisite palette with a great selection of pasta, fish, and meats. My wife and I shared an oyster appetizer that was stuffed with crab meat that was delicious. Her main entree was shrimp scampi and rice and I had a rack of lamb. Both were perfectly balanced with their sides and portions.
The Cŕeam of Mushroom soup is excellent!! Overall, the food was very good: barbequed ribs w/ broccoli and mashed potatoes was very good. The atmosphere and people were so friendly and welcoming Just as it was back in the early days of this little restaurant AND OURrelationship, 1968!!!So our little reunion with the Black Whale was a sweet moment in time!!!!! ( Well be married 50 years shortly ! )Though we stopped on the spur of the moment, the host made sure my birthday was celebrated with a wonderful and huge slice of chocolate fudge cake with lovely strawberry and. Whipped cream garnish !Thank you Black Whale for a lovely interlude !
Going early (around 530pm) we were able to find plenty of parking and had the restaurant practically to ourselves. The waitress was quite attentive and had a friendly demeanor. The food was delicious and the portions were just right. There were so many delicious options to choose from though if youre vegan, I wouldnt recommend this because there are limited choices - evem the lentil soup is made with bacon.I would def return.
The Black Whale is where the Islanders (Clamdiggers) go to eat and celebrate life events. The food is always excellent and they never try to rush anyone out the door. The owner really cares that every customer has a quality dining experience. In warmer weather patrons enjoy the outdoor patio, the perfect spot for a romantic date night. Sunday morning brunch is another feather in their cap, you can have an omelette or waffle made to order from the lavish home style buffet! What a great spot with charm galore.
Ive been going to the Black whale since I was very young. It is my all-time favorite place to be. The backyard is like a Zen garden in the summertime with bamboo trees and the serene ambience. The food is always well prepared and served with a smile. Great prices, great food, great atmosphere, great service. What more could you ask for. ❤️
As close-knit and intimate as local dining on City Island gets. Atmosphere is whimsical and envelops the senses the moment you walk through the door. Near-magical garden seating out back under the sky is both roomy and refreshing (minus the mosquitos!), and the staff is always ready to help with a smile. Food is always fantastic, with the occasional special that blows me away (Ahi-crusted Tuna Steak
I made reservations on Tuesday for a party of eight for a Saturday night reservation which was then followed by a confirmation phone call by the restaurant on Saturday. I confirmed for party of eight. Once my party and I arrived on time for our reservation, I informed the hostess our party was no longer going to be for eight due to members of our party being sick and were not going to be able to make it (this would have allowed you to seat another party of 2 or 3 and keep a table for 5). The hostess handed a buzzer to me. FORTY minutes later we still were NOT seated at our table NOR been notified at the time of being given the buzzer because we were a party of less then six people we would be placed back on a waiting time. I made a reservation well in advance and would have appreciated being aware of a wait time. My party and I were treated like we were just a walk in with no reservations. Why make a reservation? The food was good but way overpriced.....I think in the future I will choose to make a reservation at a different local restaurant that will appreciate my business. I must say the waitress did a WONDERFUL job and was not her fault for the lack of communication.
The Black Whale has a delicious selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts. I took my girlfriend out for dinner here and we had mussels and the soup of the day for appetizer, and cod and tilapia for main entree. The food was very good. Moreover, the sour dough bread and stout beer selection was satisfactory too. Above all, our server Natasha was attentive to our concerns and made us fee very welcome. Thank you Black Whale.
I was just recently there for my birthday it was different than what I had expected. I havent been there in many years but the food was good and the atmosphere was nice service was a little bit less then good because we really had to wait a long time for our food. But once the food came it was quite delicious
Eating at Black Whale feels like eating in someones living room. The place is nicely decorated in the nautical theme, but feels cozy and homey thanks to friendly staff. The food and brunch buffet is delicious and features a great selection of American foods and made to order omelettes among other things.
Very nice place on City Island to eat, this place is a hidden gem the staff is extremely helpful and attentive, the food is always great and the prices are very reasonable. Been there a few times, never had a bad meal or bad service. Check this place out. Always have nice specials too.
A nice little-known hideaway in the city for a Sunday brunch... with my significant other P 😘... romantic atmosphere and the food selection is just right, nothing crazy if your one of those gotta get my moneys worth types. Dine on the patio if the weather permits or enjoy the turn of the 19th century furnishings inside. A pleasant staff and family run, no rush atmosphere our favorite quaint little Sunday getway!
Always a fantastic place to dine in! Each year we make it a point to go, at least once for our anniversary. This year did not disappoint at all, in fact, exceeded my previous experiences. The Black Whale is a City Island institution. Once it was a destination for just coffee and desserts. Now they have a full menu and each dish is prepared with a flair. When Im on the Island I wouldnt leave without having one of their tasty coffee concoctions while sitting in their open air patio. If you ever are struggling to relax, sit on their patio and feel the stress melt away.
Its almost like your eating in someones backyard with all that patio furniture. This is a nice place for an outdoor three course meal. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is homely. After dinner, take a walk to Lickety Split for dessert, just down the street!
One of my favorite places in the world this is what you call Nautical very friendly they care for the client ,great food if you request a drink and they dont have it, they will make it for you anyway its a place that they will never say to you no, is always a yes and they dont have it they will make it to please you and to make you feel like family very clean organized professional thats what you call a real restaurant all kind of food around the world you name it its one of my favorite places I highly recommended for you and your family it will make you feel like home so if you think you coming back ,do so because its the best place to enjoy in or outdoor relaxation enjoying your meal and being family. The owner and the staff are highly professional people who knows how to treat costumers the quality of the food is 200% over a hundred exquisite the place is always very clean like the way you have your home I highly recommend the black whale to any person whose very hungry or family activities or business to have a good time good music good food and good enjoyment. As far as recommend thousands of people and if feedback is outstanding they will be back for family events business events and even romantic evenings .God bless the black whale . Keep it up. My brother Justin and I really really enjoy eating here also with our parents for any event.
From our very kind waiter and exceptional well-rounded service to food you can not discover anywhere else in Los Angeles County, APL is that hot, brand-new steakhouse that everybody need to examine out. Our primary course was the brief rib meal, which is costly at $180, however satisfied its buzz, being prepared completely and going completely with the pickle salad that comes with it. The APL sauce is a should for the brief rib.Like I stated, as a household we were really hesitant initially and unwilling to make this booking, however we were so thankful we did and eagerly anticipate returning quickly. 110-day aged steak, youre next!

2022-04-23Ive been going to the Black Whale since the 1970s, and its always a joyous experience, from the charming antique-shop decor to the yummy food to the transcendent desserts. One of the best and most enduring spots in City Island, for good reason.

2022-06-05Just celebrated my daughter’s 25th birthday at The Black Whale yesterday and had to write this review and let everyone know about this hidden gem on City Island. A small, quaint, quirky, magical, Alice in Wonderland like place that exceeded my expectations. Thanks to everyone at The Black Whale for making my daughter’s birthday a magical experience. I found out about this place by reading their reviews and they not only lived up to the many reviews I read; they knocked it out the park! From the moment I called to make an inquiry and spoke with the owners granddaughter Luna, I was sold! She was amazing from that first phone call to the very end of the night after we left the celebration feeling full and well satisfied. We celebrated in their courtyard out back under an eclectic covered patio, which was reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland! The evening was magical, the food fabulous and the staff amazing! Hat’s off to The Black Whale, their owner, hostess, wait staff, cooks and everyone who helped to make my daughter’s birthday a memorable one! Also a very special thank you to Luna, who is the Gem of The Black Whale. Please go check it out! They won’t disappoint!

2019-12-22First time at this restaurant, service was amazing. The waitress was knowledge and very courteous! Her suggestions were spot on! Very cozy ambiance. My favorite dish was the shrimp pesto. Drinks were delish!Desserts spot on and cappuccino was perfect. Although this is not a steakhouse the NY strip was perfect, melted in your mouth! Will definitely frequent this restaurant.

2022-04-304.5 STARSMuch like City Island itself This place doesnt need my approval or review. It has a dedicated local following of regulars who have been coming here for years. Atmosphere 11 out of 10. Service 5/5. Food 3.5-4/5.Incredibly comfy and warm heartfelt decor of tiffany lamps and nautical history in an 1850s building. The owners are obviously very engaged here and keep up the facilities very well. The service was exceptional. Large glasses of water brought instantly and refilled often. Friendly and gracious hostess/waitress. We were checked on just the right amount. Food came shockingly fast as well. The food was comfortable. It was quite good, but overall nothing special. I could nitpick the food if this were some extra manhattan upstart but its a nice place run by nice people and frankly the food is good enough for what this place is, an unsurpassably comfortable local institution in a nautical island community with a great community vibe. And the owners clearly know how to run a restaurant and take care of their guests.

2018-08-30Great portions. ! Fish tacos super big, go hungry. They offer bread when you are seated so, dont order appetizers. Although the coconut shrimp and lobster ravioli were to die for.

2019-09-09City Island treasure. All you can eat brunch was well done. Food and service were very good. Eclectic patio with interesting antique / garage sale style. Cozy interior too.
