Salmon Benedict at City Beer HallHave you ever put food in your mouth and heard Angels sing? Each passing bite bringing another small tear to your eye. Every taste is a brief moment of bliss that makes you forget about all your problems. Every aroma makes you feel for a second that everything is going to be Okay. This, my friend, is not only food. It is Art.
I fell in love with CBH the moment I walked in. There was live music, ample amount of space, and everyone just seemed to be enjoying themselves. The food did not disappoint and though it felt like we were in a secret corner we were not forgotten about. The portions were large. I love that CBH works with local farms and businesses for their supplies. Little touches from ambiance to putting the chefs name on the menu just make this place special. I cannot wait to return when the weather is nicer so I can be on the patio. Now I see why this place gets a large line. Come for the drinks or music and stay for the amazing food. You wont be let down.
A really great experience, large bar/beer garden area, Saturday/Sunday brunch, large craft beer selection, and tasty eats! Complimentary first selected drink, ie. Mimosa, Bloody Mary, and more. Free pizza ticket with drink purchase (we will have to return to redeem:) All of our food was delicious, but our server didnt visit as much as we needed for refills.
My type of place! Historic venue right in the heart of downtown Albany. I LOVE the historic structure and all the historic photography and art inside. Easy to walk to from the nearby hotels. I had the raspberry sour on the tap. Extraordinary. Good selection of beers. Food menu featured a good mix too. Recommend for travelers and locals alike.
We were in Albany for one night, and The City Beer Hall had been recommended to us by a friend. It looks like a beer hall, casual atmosphere with friendly service, long wooden benches, and a free small cheese pizza with every $5+ beer (good selection if beers). The menu, though, is what far exceeded or expectations and went well beyon typical beer hall fare. Definitely recommend checking it out if you find yourself in Albany
Fabulous place in downtown Albany. Low key yet high quality vibe, delicious food, excellent beer (I can be pretty picky about beer). Friendly staff. Brad was out waiter and he was awesome (thank you Brad!) Highly recommend - for anyone - out of towners in town for a conference or other matter - or local folks who havent checked it out before -
First off, I have to say that I do adore City Beer Hall because of the sentimental value it has for me and my fiancé. Our first date was at the Speak Easy right below it! We loved this place so much that we wanted to have our wedding here.We got in touch with Kurtis Breed, CBHs event coordinator, via e-mail and phone to discuss pricing options. We also met in person to take a look at the facility and to help us picture what our wedding would look like here. We talked about potential pricing packages and Kurtis said he would get back to us within a few days. Three weeks has passed and we havent heard from him since. I sent him several follow up e-mails and he hasnt responded back to us.We can understand if CBH cannot accommodate our wedding. All we ask is for some professionalism and a simple e-mail letting us know. We wouldve been totally fine with that, we are very understanding people. Its unfortunate that we wont be having our wedding here, and I hope that they dont let other couples down in the future.
Man oh man, Im not sure how google finds these places but Im surely glad they did. This place rocks. Its super close to the convention center, really homey but professional. The beers on tap are top notch the mixed drink are strong and the atmosphere amazing. Do you self a favor and try this place.... of and the French Onion poutine is the closest thing to Canada Ive had...... Try it.
I came for the exciting menu and then got told they were out of anything I was interested in. Got the beef burger instead. It was fine. About what youd expect for a $16 artisanal burger. Beer selection was okay. Overall, found it to be okay but nothing special. Would not go again.
Great place which we luckily found online because its definitely not a street you would find just from randomly walking around that area. I got a burger which was one of the better ones that I had in a while. And I found a porter beer (Port City Porter) which was really great. And the waitstaff was really awesome. Had a great time catching up with my cousins from out of state there.
We stood outside a little past 11 am which annoyed me because it was cold. Once we got in the wait wasnt too long. About 20-30 min before we were seated, had mimosas to pass the time. The Dj was trash. So much more to Biggie than 4-5 songs. It was an era for Bad Boy records, so many other songs couildve been played. Once seated they couldve had bread or something while we waited on our food. The shrimp and grits portion was small for my taste. The grits were thicker than Id like as well. It came with sunny side up eggs but I had nothing to sop up the egg once I broke the yolks. Some potatoes or toast wouldve done the trick though. My friend had the steak and eggs and the steak was HUGE! The waitress was really sweet and attentive. Unfortunately, I left still hungry. Hopefully they can fine tune these few things and it would be great!
DO NOT GO TO CITY BEER HALL!! This place was full of underage kids on a Friday night and the owner supports it completely. Not sure how some of these kids even made it through the front door but they don’t care as long as they spend money. The drinks are weak, so the younger crowd doesn’t know they’re spending twice as much. I also saw them kick out a wedding party while I was there and they didn’t seem to be doing anything wrong… they must only like the business of underaged college kids.
Pretty much all the drinks here come with a pizza.... a pizza! I kid you not. Granted the pizza is just a tortilla with sauce and cheese, but it really hits the spot. They give you a little ticket with your drink that you bring straight back to the kitchen to exchange for your pizza. Its a good spot all around. During the week they have events like trivia night, and on the weekend they have specials and from the advertisement in the bathroom it looks like theyre about to open up a patio as the weather gets warm. There was dancing upstairs and we had so much fun. The main floor has better lighting a good atmosphere and the pizza was bountiful so we all were sharing our pizzas with new friends and having fun. You should start or end your night here anytime you go out in Albany.
Great food and beer choices. Everything on tap is as craft as craft beer gets. Missing two stars because we asked for the bar staff to turn on the NY Giants game and not one of the 4 staff could figure out how to either work the TV or figure out what channel. Pretty sure the place doesnt have NFL Network either.
Far from a hall of beer. Staff is more interested in their appearance than service. Overpriced lackluster food. Free pizza tickets that no one explains and you get treated like youre an idiot when you ask. But boy was I glad to see that the pizza came straight from the local jail house kitchen. Yum! Oh, dont worry about the broken glass.
Went to see the American rock and roll band Phish at the Times Union Center and was looking for a place to wet my whistle after the show. Stumbled (not literally) into the City Beer Hall and was not disappointed cool vibe + good beers + live music = great way to end a night.
Great food and fantastic beer list as always! Menu has options for everyone, including vegetarian and vegan. Patio is still fabulous, and tables are appropriately distanced which makes for a safe and really chill dining experience (also really enjoyed the music selection on the patio!). Everyone (staff and customers) had masks on when necessary and were super friendly. Thanks for the great vibe - well definitely be back!
Super inviting and friendly, very easy to find and access, great internal and outside seating, and all around great drink and food options. I rarely ever return to the same place twice when visiting a new area, but we ended up here 3 nights on our trip, just because it had such great options and was so friendly and comfortable. Not to mention you get a small cheese pizza ticket with every drink order and the pizza is pretty dang good! I will definitely be going again the next time I am in town.. 100%
The service was great, the beer was good, the place is nice, but the food was bad.Charcuterie board was strange- no cheese, not enough toast, no mustard or anything, and not the best tasting components. The lemon shrimp cocktail is also a little strange. And the brick chicken was really dry.The salad with the chicken was good.Get the food figured out and it’s 5/5
The perfect place to visit during a pandemic!City beer hall offers a large outdoor space where you can easily social distance. My gf and I sat in the back part of the outdoor patio on a Friday evening and felt completely safe.We ordered the Poutin and shared the chicken and waffles, everything was really fresh and delicious! The beer selection is great and a small personal pizza is offered for free with every beer!Do yourself a favor and try this place out if youre in the area.
Always great rotating beer and cider selection. The Pizza tickets are the 5 star touch. The kitchen food could be a bit less fancy though. Love this place for the taps and late night pizzas. And the music is consistently my kind of alternative. But when I have to google half of the things on the menu to know what they are, and its not that kind on the wallet, either, it really pushes to only get the pizzas.
Theyve got a great beer selection and the complimentary pizzas arent that bad. Them feeding you with every drink is a wonderful touch. More guys than girls, but it is a beer hall so thats expected. Like most bars the place transforms as the day goes on. Lunch is low key and delicious, evening offers a nice place for a cold drink and relaxed dinner. Late night is party City.
3.5 stars really. The food and staff are good. A free pizza with every pint is a nice bonus after a few drinks (keep in mind you get what you pay for). We heard they have bands there every so often which seems like a great idea for that bar. It is large, a decent bar atmosphere, a well represented craft beer list (keep the goses!), and overall a decent bar. We come here once every year when we are in the area for a tournament.
Great little hang out. They usually have a good selection on tap. The food menu is small but interesting and tasty. They offer free little personal pizzas with purchase of beer, just take the little ticket, go to the kitchen area, and trade it for a pizza. The pizza isnt great, but its free, and sometimes you just want a little something to go with the beer.
Great place for brunch, lunch, dinner, or just drinks. Free mini flat bread style pizza with a pint. Staff are really patient and great at navigating a busy beer hall setting. Weve been there with just adults and with the kids, same great welcome either way. The patio is great on warm days. Brunch comes with free coffee AND hair of the dog. What could be better on a Sunday morning?!
A pub with real personality and outstanding food. The steak and eggs brunch was an absolute 10. It was served with an amazing sauce and light crispy home fries. Roast beef sandwich was excellent. Served on ciabatta bread, it was a perfect balance of meat/bread/veggies. Fun, lively (loud) atmosphere.
Somebody recognize and promote Connor, went to my first concert post Covid, walked here after and on a rainy night, this kid came out and handed me his own umbrella while asking me to kindly vape away from the door. It was a really beautiful approach to the situation and it made my first time here very memorable.
9 of us ate dinner on a saturday night. Atmosphere here is interesting with the high ceilings, wood paneled walls, thick wood beer hall tables and benches, and the fireplace. Food and beer menu is diverse and unique with excellent options and good prices. Our beer and meals were excellent except for the french fries and a few other things were served cold. On the downside, It took a long time to be waited on. A long time for the food to be served, and 45 minutes to get the billed paid. I would go back again and hope for faster service.
I wasnt drinking and I wasnt terribly impressed with the food. I had the French onion soup and the venison steak. Everything was just okay. Even the building itself looked better from the outside. Im boosting my review an extra star because most people would be here to drink, and everyone else agreed that it was a good place for beer.
I came to this place for the first time tonight and I must say that the beer selection was very good. My friend and I also ordered the Idaho Finger Steaks which was the only thing we ordered and took forever to come but seen other tables with more ppl get their food first. I must say, they were very bland tasting and would not ever get again and wish I would’ve got something else. I would not recommend that appetizer at all but the beer was delicious. Plus we barely saw our waitress while we were there.
Great beer selection. Love being able to get a small pizza with each beer. Communal seating when you are the to dine is a nice change of pace. Usually pretty loud inside, however their patio makes up for it. Bathrooms could use some attention and updating. All black everything doesnt exactly fit with the rest of the style of the bar.
The City Beer Hall has a great variety of local brewed beers, although they dont have much international options. They gave us with a free pizza for buying the first drink and it was quite a nice experience.Their food menu is fantastic, it is so diverse that I didnt feel in a pub. They have really fresh food options, also gluten free and really healthy and creative dishes. There is one big bad side of this place: last couple of times I went there were a huge amount of mice, I even had to move from my table, I saw at least 6 mice in a sigle visit. I wouldnt doubt recommending this place if they take care of the mice problem.
Undoubtedly one of the best burgers Ive ever had. The spicy pickles and the pickled red onions add so much to the Burger. Great craft beer selection. The picnic style tables and ambient music make the atmosphere laid back. My bartender was very knowledgeable about all the beers on tap.
Every single visit to The City Beer Hall has been great. Their food is delicious and the selection of beer is wonderful. With each beer purchase you receive a ticket for a personal pizza. You can just come here, buy beer and eat the pie. Customer service is awesome, and the feel of the establishment is very historic with a modern touch. I always make it a point to stop in when Im in the area! 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺
Free Pizza when you order a drink and it was pretty good. The bucket special is a good deal and lets you sample a wide variety of beers. The bartender asked what kind of beers we were into prior to making our bucket which was nice. Both bartenders were very nice and attentive.
Located in a historic building, with a unique architecture, this is definitely one of my favorite places in the picturesque downtown Albany. Great staff comes up with delicious drinks and good food recommendations of the menu. Free individual pizza with a beer order is always a hit. We couldnt use their beautiful quaint porch tonight because its closed for the winter. But in the summer, its particularly delightful to hang out at that cozy porch chatting with a great company, while enjoying beautiful scenic city views, live music and flourishing greenery on the porch, surrounded with the blue sky and sunlight.
Drinks are a little over priced here, but everything is really good. In the evenings drinks from the bar(s)(depending on the time of day and season theres multiple bars open), get you a free pizza which are small, personal sized pizza great for snacking! Thin crust but yummy sauce and cheese.
Four stars based solely on beer selection and atmosphere . Stopped in for a cold one after touring the Capital building. They turned the original City Hall building, into a beer hall. Spacious interior with a good sized bar and a great selection of craft beers. Sat outside in the beer garden .There was a DJ spinning tunes in the middle of a Saturday afternoon. Did not sample the food, but the dishes served at the surrounding tables looked good. Will definitely be back for grub .
One of the best beer selections in Albany. Always a good mix of New York beers, well known craft brewers, and a few up and comers. The bartenders are very knowledgeable too which makes the experience even better. Their food is delicious too. Basically, this place has it all - good beer, good food, good people, and even a good brunch.
There was a time when I would have given this place five stars but the menu isnt as exciting as it used to be. Also, a brunch promo of a free drink with entree is a little inaccurate if the price of the entree is increased $3 during brunch. The beer selection is still pretty great, though, and its nice to go to a bar in Albany that isnt all college kids drinking PBR.
Absolutely free 40oz in a paper bag for my birthday. Great bartender gave us a free hard root beer out of the goodness of her heart! Id give 6 stars if I could. & free mini pizza with drink purchase. $10 for my long island which was made just right. Great place. They have a bull upstairs but its roped off right now.
How can you not love a place with a fire place and free pizza with beer purchases during happy hour. I love this place because the staff were attentive and the menu is pretty wide. They have a nice selection of beers on tap. I like that you can get different ounces too. I think this is definitely a place to be enjoyed so make sure tour Uber and Lyft rides are ready to get you there and back home. Nice place to hang out with friends or meet new ones. Actually met some friends that were going to the same concert as me. I am glad I was on the 1st floor this time rather than upstairs. Nice place!!!
Awesome place, we hit it up after a concert and it was packed! Wait was 1hr and 15 but we could still get service at the bar and the free pizza was great! Great because it was free with beer but also a good cheese pizza nice and crisp crust. You should definitely swing by if you are in the area and like beer.
A great gastro pub. 1/2 price burgers on Monday, And they do free mini pizza if you order drinks with a certain cost. Their salads are top notch and you can add any protein on their menu. A bit pricey, but you get really good food, so a fair trade off. Will be back often.
The food is great and always changing. No matter how busy they are, Ive never had trouble finding a seat for myself and my companions. Trivia nights are fun and I love the little pizzas they serve if you order their drinks. Its a great place to hang out and the service is good.
Beautiful building with several bars. Drinks were decent and prices were great. Called a few hours ahead to be told no reservations which was disappointing as we arrived and there was a huge crowd before the concert we attended nearby. Will try to visit again and hopefully get to sit and eat.
Great atmosphere, old bank building with lots of architectural charm, picturesque long wooden tables allow for communal seating. Group of us went for brunch, decent breakfast options however one of our dishes came without hanger steak (bubbly waitress quickly corrected), my meal was cold upon arrival but I didnt want to send it back as felt like wed already had to bother them about the missing steak. Then upon seeing the bill noticed they had overcharged us for the a beer flight. Quietly pointed it out to waitress who tried to get an adjustment for us as breakfast menu listed the price as $10 however teal hair mgr came over and shouted a rambling apology saying it was misprinted on new menu and wouldnt honor price. Totally weirded out in front of our group. Staff is friendly and attentive however the situation left us uncomfortable. Will not be back for Brunch again soon.
Great atmosphere, wonderful beer selection and friendly staff. The free personal pizza you can redeem with each beer isnt anything to write home about, more of a bit of marinara and cheese on top of a decently sized cracker, but it does fill you up and can save you a couple of bucks since their food is relatively expensive. Dont get me wrong their food is great, but if youre not there for dinner its just difficult to convince yourself to buy any of the appetizers when you can just get a free pizza.
City Beer Hall has a robust be menu and an eclectic meal assortment. The decor and design of this spot is awesome, from the beautiful exterior to the gorgeous vine-covered chandelier, it all looks well curated. To boot, you also get free mini cheese pizza with each beer purchase!
Burgers are always good , great atmosphere and surprisingly family friendly as they have high chairs . We are never made to feel weird when me and my husband stroll in with our little one for a quick bite and beer. Vast selection of craft beers that are so good. Friendly staff . We will keep coming
I visited The City Beer Hall on 3/21/19. Its a nice, relaxing hang out spot. I personally didnt like the lunch menu. Im not sure what the dinner menu looks like or if there is even one. I had Tebasaki Wings...they were really delicious! I would recommend them. I wanted to also try the Turkey Sandwich but they were out at the time. They have a good selection of beers. I enjoy drinking Nine Pin. Also everytime you buy a beer you receive a little ticket which grants you a little personal pizza, which you can use same day or use when you return on another day.
Great bar, great atmosphere. Depending on what time you go the bar is accommodating. If you want a nice brunch spot, go for that. Want a night out? Go on a Friday and itll match that. Impressive architecture and wide open floor plan with a second bar space up top to alleviate over crowding. Simply put, a must visit bar in Albany.
Great drinks and you get a FREE personal pizza ticket with each one? Yes please. Theres also terrific seating options and dancing if you fancy it.I have now experienced the cbh during two weekday specialty nights. Half prices burgers on Mondays is awesome because the burgers are terrific. More importantly, the food is quite expensive so if you like burgers, this 50 percent discount is for you.I have also attended trivia night which is well organized with interesting rounds and question followed by final jeopardy. First place can even win prizes such as t shirts!
Best place to visit on Albany, good ambience. Drink is starting from 4$-5$ . Offer free plain cheese pizza regular size with every beer 🍺. Best day to visit on Friday and Saturday. Open still 2 am morning. It will be good to hangout with group. Small dance floor on first floor. Good music and DJ. You will enjoy it.
Free pizza with every beer. Free mimosa or bloody mary with brunch. Nice back patio with view of the Empire State Plaza. Fireplace inside adds to the atmosphere. Food is good but lacks in the comfort food area. The bar is big, beer selection is great. The place can get pretty loud/rowdy.
Whoa. A free pizza with a beer? And you get to meet all the chefs when you pick it up in the kitchen. Fresh beer on tap and some pretty inviting conversation. Let’s talk burger. Holy Toledo. That was one amazing patty. Fresh and local beef tasted like the cow died that day r.i.p Bessie 🙏🏼 The city beer hall will forever go down as one of the best overall experiences I’ve had in all of the north east. Keep doing what you’re doing!
The brunch menu is curated with your go-to breakfast classics but delivered on a much more refined level. Most of the plates include a beer, mimosa or bloody mary which makes it an easy choice to propose when youre going with a crowd. Typically a good beer selection with some local favorites. Additionally, they offer vegan and vegetarian options. Atmosphere is old Albany with rustic features. This is one of my favorite brunch spots, but also a great night out.
Free small flat bed pizza with each drink. Great drink menu, eclectic menu. Everything folks tried was tasty and grest with good portipns. It though took us some Google searches to find what some of the ingredients were but never disappointed and definitely a place worth visiting.
This is some of, if not the best, food in Albany. The menu is creative and delicious. The environment is lively and casual and facilitates a good time. This business transforms from a fine dining venue (beer dinners and thoughtful pairings) to themed pop-ups and dance parties SEAMLESSLY. It is a little bit of everything and they manage to crush it every time. The staff is incredibly informative and accommodating. Our favorite spot until the end of time.
Interesting place. We used one of the rooms for a larger party of about 80 people. The building is quite attractive from the inside. There was a private bar for our group which was a BIG hit! The food was OK, with mixed reviews from the attendees. Overall a good experience.
If you want to dance, hang outdoors on a patio with friends, or drunkley eat free tortilla pizza than City Beer Hall might be a perfect destination. Be aware I have only been there between the hours of midnight and 2 am. The bathroom usually is disgusting. Its a little too packed sometimes. There are also often older men there, within crowds of 20 year olds, being really creepy!
In town on business, this place had as good a beer selection as any. its not about quantity of taps, its the variety and they had sour beers, hi grav beers, bourbon barrel beers, about any type you could want on tap and in bottle. They source beers from good breweries too, all that I sampled was quality even if its not my preference. I ate the brussel sprouts and they were delicious in a house buffalo sauce. This place is above average for sure, I travel a lot with work and this is on my list of places to return to.
Great food and a decent beer list. The place itself was really cool but my only complaint would be it was very loud. Service was great even after I made our waitress surprise me with my dinner and beer choices (Im very indecisive) and I have to say she nailed it. Would definitely go back.
Your third stop if youre looking for best beer bars in Albany (along with the Madison Pour House & Beer Belly). A great selection of craft beers, tons of space and a nice menu (for brunch or dinner). They also offer something for everyone and in the evening you can get a free tortilla pizza with each drink. Downstairs has big dinning tables with benches and a patio out back. Upstairs caters to a more hipster shot + cheap beer menu. If Im headed downtown, there is a good chance I stop here at some point. If you are looking to enjoy your beer and quieter conversation though, I do recommend going before 10pm - it can get a little loud and crowded later as a more typical bar.
A free pizza with every beer? Sounds too good to be true? Well, it aint! City Beer Hall does that, and more. Great beer list, interesting cocktails, and good specials in a funky, old building. Okay, the pizzas arent spectacular, but I dont know any other place that does it! Check this place out.
Nineties night is every Saturday with drink specials upstairs that I consider an irresponsible decision at this point (I think its something like a beer and a shot for $5). The music is always a beautiful blend of nostalgic euphoria and, and again irresponsible decision-making.For a much more relaxing evening, downstairs is always a good time if you grab a bench. On top of that you get free pizza with each beer, and when the patio opens during the summer the stars align for some amazing nights. 10/10 would go again.
If you love large crowds of drunkards and college kids, then this is the place to go! Im personally not a fan of this place. But its roomy enough for a party thats for sure! Couple floors of beer and food, for someone who likes to drink and be merry, id suggest this as a place to be!
We made reservations the other night, got there just fine. it was pretty empty for 5 PM but it was weds.we sat by the fire. and there were several mice we noticed running around on the floor and along the wall. they were out of several menu items by 5pm apparently. not steak, no fish, no duck. which basicly left veggies on the menu. we order a caruderi board and was very disappointment with how it was put together not to mention the high price. thing could be much better pair. couldnt find a thing I wanted on the menu. so we left with out ordering dinner. would not recommend this for food. which is fun Im an a uber drive and normally here great things but this will not be somewhere I recommend to my customer again.
I absolutely love City Beer Hall! When I lived in Albany, this was one of my regular weekend stops. The atmosphere is fun, but relaxed, it is very rustic with its wooden tables, and I have never felt unsafe there. The fact that there is a free mechanical bull and free pizza with every drink purchase definitely makes this place a must!
I like this bar because there is a mix of party-goers and professionals. The bar upstairs and downstairs is convenient when it gets crowded, although I have noticed the bartenders tend to ignore guys in favor of girls. Theres a dance floor upstairs with a DJ, lots of room for sitting downstairs, a large outdoor area with another bar. Most times, when you buy a drink it comes with a house personal pan pizza - which is satisfying. Theres also 2 separate bathrooms however small. My only qualm is how small the upstairs is - it gets really packed. Also, no cover to get inside which is nice.
We put our names in for a table of 9 at 4:30 and finally got a text at 6:41. People never left their tables as they were waiting for a concert at the times union center. They would not take reservations that night so many of us waited and never ate. A. They should have taken reservationsB. After a table finished dinner they should have suggested to them to have a drink ar the bar and open the table to others attending the same concert. All nine of us will never go back. Very bad management on a concert night.
Hostess did not know much about what was going on at all. She acted like it was her first day working there. We appreciated her patience but she was too dim-witted to be working in a restaurant. We had a problem and she failed to find us a solution. Perhaps dishwashing could suit her better. The manager came out and also failed to find us a solution. We understood that it wasn’t his fault but his attitude was rude and abrasive. He acted as if he didn’t care about our business because his restaurant was already established and popular. Such attitude will only get him so far as people will slowly catch on. I bet the food is great and the drinks are flowing but the manager doesn’t care for the people he serves.
Great place for all people and all ages. I went with a friend on a little mini date and the whole Beer Hall experience is something thats starting to creep into Buffalo. But, in Albany is where its at. Great food, great beer selection, fun open and public atmosphere. The giant picnic table seating keeps the place feeling relaxed and fun but also adds a ton of atmosphere. The crowd is a mix, skinny jeans, skinny ties, business suits, and leather. It can be a bit noisy and obnoxious in later hours so, unfortunately, it may not be the perfect place for some types of more intimate or delicate occasions. But, for everything else its a great place to be.
Ive been a few times and have always had good food and drink, although during restaurant week the kitchen seemed to have a hard time getting things to be consistently the right temperature. The tables with benches arent my favorite style seating, but its a good place to meet with friends and have a good time.
On my friends birthday, instead of the regular birthday drink we were given a 40 wrapped in a paper bag. We thought this was interesting, but didnt pay it any mind. Until another employee came up to us and accused us of smuggling in alcohol, because they dont give stuff like that to people. Mind you we are a group of young people of color. We ended up leaving after that encounter, but as we were leaving saw security swarming our table. Really glad we got out when we did ...
We came here to have a beer and lunch before a concert over the weekend. The hostess sat us, but nobody came to take our beverage order for about 10-15 minutes. When the server came over, she informed us that all of the tap lines were out minus two ciders and a Belgian wheat. We decided to go to another local bar to drink and eat instead.Venue seems very nice and clean. Service was friendly. Discouraged that, at The City Beer Hall, there was only one beer available.
Best brunch ive ever had!!! There was a long wait and it was quite hard to get a drink while we waited but it was well worth it! I had a fantastic bacon, chive, andouille sausage and fontina cheese omlete. My date had steak and eggs. The steak was tender deliscious and cooked to perfection. It was a ton of food and came with a complimentary cocktail! Great atmosphere and the staff was terrific. I cant wait to go back!
I enjoy coming here sometimes after a long week with a group of friends just to relax, chat and eat. City Beer Hall opened not too long ago, but the place sure brings a lot of people, especially college students. What draws people to this place is not just for good food and drinks, but the fact that they have a mechanic bull right upstairs. Sometimes, there is a long line of people waiting to conquer the bull, but the line goes by quick since the bull flings you off in a matter of seconds. What also makes this place a good place to hang out is that every beer/drink you get, gets you a ticket for a free 8” thin, crust cheese pizza, and you can be sitting by the fire place to stay cozy enjoying your beer and noshing on food. If you want to conquer the bull yourself, you should come here!
I cant believe a place with a rather diminuative name can pull off their unique menu options like miso cucumber mediterranean hummus, go for it (it has surprises no soft bread enough said). The tapas sampler was excellent too with good smoked items, wow fish, meat, veggie it all worked so well. Teenage daughter luved her burger.. I found everything here from the food to staff being worthy of a 5+ star rating...P.S. ....I was happy they had tap options for beers I drink but I dont find often on tap back home. But I was I was not getting the ny beer experience I expected. Come on folks somebody local is doing a double ipa or a beer engine ale.
We have had brunch here a bunch of times and always loved it (not just because of the drink that comes w/ your breakfast, I promise - just remember that you only get the ones listed!!) We were looking for someplace open w/ outdoor seating last month when it seemed everywhere in Albany was closed and remembered that they had the patio...and YAY! They were open. The menu was typically hipster as all of the new places that have opened up (or altered their menu) in the last few years in Albany but they all sounded good and it wasnt all just pickle brined chicken (which I happen to love so it is quite often my go-to in said hipster joints) so we were feeling pretty hopeful. My steak was lovely, the corn rinds were awesome! I could snack on them all day (small shavings off the cob and then roasted - mmmmmmm) I was hard pressed to share w/ Mike. Loved the truffled cauliflower too. We have been back a few times w/ friends and everything has been fantastic. The chefs may claim that there are too many chefs in the kitchen but I disagree. I think there are just the right amount.Oh. The house made spicy pickles. Try them. Buy some and take them home and then hide them from children and spouses (they are in danger of binge eating from spouses and them leaving you a few!! and feeling thus leaving You feeling like murder, safer to hide them. Although I bet a judge would let you off as justifiable homicide in this case.)
Great beer selection and drink combos (my favorite is the dirty hipster: a shot of jaeger with a Blue Ribbon to wash it down). The downstairs has a lot of seating available and an outdoor patio. Upstairs is another bar with a large dance floor.Definitely one of the best places to go in Albany on a weekend night.
I love this place and frequently go here as its around he corner from my house. But dont be fooled by its Google tag line, or web site or any of the Yelp reviews-- there is no mechanical bull. I found out from the hostess that she has officially gone to a nice farm where there are other mechanical Bulls to live out their days. To say Im disappointed is a massive understatement.
After going here for numerous years without qualm, I went on a weekend evening and after trying to take a photo of my friend had my phone literally knocked out of my hand by a “bouncer.” I guess this place is a college student hangout or whatever, but to be treated that way as a Downtown Albany resident was really disappointing. I won’t be back anytime soon - not when the treatment at other bars is much more appropriate.
Free pizza per beer is the highlight of the place. Decent selection of beer. Bartenders are nothing special and the food is outright bad but the personal cheese pizzas are hard to mess up. The establishment is wicked nice but could just use an all around better staff, both frontend and backend.
I dont do Google reviews but I feel I have to for this place. Was in town for a friends wedding. A couple different people at the hotel suggested this spot and mentioned to check out the Speakeasy downstairs (side entrance outside with a Red Light). I hit it up after the rehearsal dinner on Friday night. Decent looking place. Trying to class it up I ordered a Macallans 18 (usually a $30 drink) but the bartender said I gotta a really nice Macallans you should try. I said Sure. He puts the neat Scotch (Maybe a finger and halfs worth) down with the tab right next to it. Though that was weird so I opened the bill......$1,500.....when I quesitoned him he said it was the Macallans 50 and thats what I ordered. The guy was an uber doosh. Thankfully I hadnt touched the drink. I returned it and then was asked to leave by a bouncer 5 minutes later. Bouncer couldnt tell me why. The couple next to me was just as disgusted with the place as I was. Avoid the Speakeasy. Can;t speak for the upstairs but if you employ those kind of people you get one star.
First off. If you do decide to go. Ask to be sat in anyones section except Kats. Her service is horrible. Took a good 20 minutes to get a glass of water. By the hostess. Another 20 minutes go by before she graces us with her presence. A family sat down next to us 10-15 mins after we did, and they were greeted by their server before Kat came by. Our order was placed ahead of theirs, but yet our food came out at least 20 mins after theirs, with an over cooked steak. Our server then proceeded to make minimal effort of checking on us throughout our time there, seeing as how she never came back. The manager had to come by to finish clearing the table, when he made the unfortunate mistake of asking how everything was. Sadly, his concern was the only bright spot of our time here. This was our first trip here, and it will be our last.
City Beer Hall is a favorite of mine -- great food, great things on tap (always gluten free options). This place is toward the top of my list (usually #1), when thinking of places to go with friends to have a relaxing evening after work. I can even handle the occasional Saturday club night upstairs. And if looking for something truly intimate/private, the speakeasy in the basement is a true destination with handlebar mustached mixologists preparing real old time cocktails. Very well laid out with spaces for everyone, in a historic building. You can picture the politicians from days of yore, wheeling and dealing in the victorian couches that you will still find in the corners....

2022-03-175 stars. This place is awesome. I was visiting Albany for 2 days for work, and heard about this place from my driver on the way into the city. I am so glad I stopped in. Friendly staff, cool building. I ordered a draft beer and received a ticket to get a free pizza. The bartender told me I could take it to the kitchen to redeem it for a personal pizza. So, I walk around the corner at her direction into the actual kitchen, and the kitchen staff greets me welcomely as I enter into their doors thinking I am walking somewhere I shouldnt be as a customer. They took my ticket and told me to come back in a few minutes to pick up my pizza. Kitchen staff was all very nice as well. Came back a few minutes later, and picked it up. The pizza was thin crust, just cheese (made on a tortilla? I think) and absolutely amazing. The perfect delicious tiny pizza, and free with a $7 draft beer. Does life actually get any better than this? I think not. Cant wait to come back here!

2021-10-03We were in Albany for one night. We decided to go to city hall due to proximity of our hotel. It was a historic building and was set up for casual atmosphere with friendly service, long wooden benches. They provided a free small cheese pizza with non canned beer. The chi bel burger and bowl salad was really tasty. Definitely recommend checking it out if you find yourself in Albany

2022-03-18It’s 70 degrees outside and 80 degrees in this bar. The place is called city beer and they have 10 on tap all of which are nothing to write home about. Just got my beer and it came out warm. Place looks cool but is a drag.

2021-09-26I couldnt have chosen a better place to come for brunch in this neighborhood. I got an apple cider mimosa and the salmon benedict without red onions. Its cooked to perfection! Seriously, look how perfect the poached eggs are in my pictures. Also, the service is fantastic. I got my food and drinks in a timely manner. Ill definitely be coming back here in the near future.

2022-03-07I just went here last night with some friends. I loved the vibe so much! We went for y2k night and had such a blast. The drinks were really nice and the appetizers were delicious! The Mac and nuggets are what we had, and I will definitely come back one day. 💕

2022-04-24Burger was great, atmosphere was great, drinks were amazing, a bit pricey but still good, super friendly staff, would have given 6 out of 5 stars, but my friend ordered the beet salad, and as a result of said salad, farted in my car later on. It made me gag and it lingered even with all my windows down. I am disappointed they allow that item on the menu, knowing the sever repercussions the friends and family of the person eating it will have to suffer. Please, for the sake of all that is holy, get that ancient grain beet salad off the menu. The gastrointestinal distress it can cause will make you rethink spending time with the people you care about. Friends don’t let friends drink and drive is an important tenant to abide by, however, I would much rather he chugged straight ethanol and gotten behind the wheel of a Ram 3500 than having him eaten that and sat in my car for an extended period of time. He is my closest friend, but the smell that emitted from him after eating this salad triggered my flight or fight response. Overall the experience at the restaurant was fantastic, the results of leaving the restaurant left me heart broken, as I could rationalize kicking my best friend out of my car at 80 mph on the thruway. I swear to you, that salad is a weapon and should come with a warning, maybe even a necessary license to purchase. I will be returning, but if someone I’m with orders that salad, you will get violent, which is saying a lot as I am a peaceful man, but the only path I can take to prevent a tragedy is one of biblical proportions. Again, amazing burger, drinks, and staff, but the results of what happened to my friend after eating that salad made me question my belief in God. What kind of god would allow that? Fantastic beer and burger.

2022-03-17This was a nice gem that my coworker found close to our hotel. It was really busy when we stopped by and it was only the early evening, like 4-5pm but were able to get a seat. They have a nice beer selection as well. The pizza is like an adult size Lunchable pizza and its surprisingly filling.

2021-12-15What a DIVINE brunch experience this past Sunday. Top notch service, quick seating, phenomenal live Jazz music playing (seriously, such a pleasant touch) and a Mimosa party really made my day. The Garbage Bowl was to-die-for. The panacotta for dessert was so fun-never had that in the past. Really quite the amazing experience. I cant wait to go back for date night!
