The owner George is extremely helpful. He is a lover of animals of all kinds especially reptiles. He has great deals that could benefit anyone from beginners to the expert/advance keepers. He offers a Non judgmental and a pleasant family like environment and his husbandry is impeccable. I love to go in on my day off and handle some of the animals as he has an open cage policy which means if you ask he will let you handle his animals. The variety of animals he keeps are of wide range and I wouldn’t buy my animals or accessories from anywhere else. Again I have to express how knowledgeable he is. And if your having issues with your animal he’s always there to help. He also does pet sitting for a small fee. This pet stop is phenomenal. Thankyou George for your dedication.
George is the best guy ever so nice to me and everything he help me right when I got my first snake as soon as I got the snake he helped me with everything I needed and also helped me feed him for the first time because I didn’t know how to feed him at first thank you so much you know who I am :D
I stopped here to take a look at what they had and was decently impressed with the selection. However upon further inspection I noticed one of the birds has a horrible scissor beak, and a couple of the other birds had plucked a large amount of their feathers out. The place is cramped and a mess with multiple animals free roaming. And I thought PetSmart was bad! I had read other reviews before writing this and noticed a trend where when the safety and health of an animal is questioned the owner is very defensive. Seems to me like someone is just profiting off these animals and doesn’t give a damn about them or the customers! I don’t recommend supporting this business as all my hope went out the window when I heard the owner’s nasty attitude. Can’t handle criticism, don’t run a business!
Stopped by on a whim today and I can say I will absolutely never go back, and I would encourage others to not support this business either. I can’t comment on the care provided for the birds & small animals. However the care provided for the reptiles is enraging. Immediately I noticed several bearded dragons in an enclosure just big enough for one. Anyone who knows the slightest bit about these creatures knows that they should never be cohabbed. Then I noticed a bearded dragon in an enclosure with no basking light or UVB. He clearly has mouth rot. No hiding spot, no basking spot, nothing in his enclosure except for a bowl of dried up greens. I asked the owner about him who got defensive, stating he knew about how to provide proper care. Clearly he doesn’t. Or he just doesn’t give a damn.
I have bought animals from different stores seen many people handling the animals in ways that I have often said this is a very big store and they are like that. First time i walk in the owner is cleaning habitats animals all held delicately and proper. This store is roughly 35 minutes from my house but I will not be caught at another store for all my future little pets and feeders. Overall best experience I have had in some time.
Welp, I know I cant compete with all the 5 Star reviews here, but I felt it necessary to share my concerns. The place is crammed. Theres poop on the floor which is carpeted. I cant say the place has never been cleaned, but Im sure its been a couple months. Every animal is in a cage half the size recommended. Cages Not cleaned recently. The staff had a very cavalier and casual understanding of some of the important points on pet care, ownership, and responsibility. In short, they are not fit to be dealing out actual live animals. I have no idea how this place has not been shut down.Im sure the owner may respond to my complaints and dismiss them in a flip manner. Regardless, I will not be returning until a serious overhaul has been performed. I mean really, just spend two days, take everything out of the store, rip out that carpet, put down max $500 of plastic tiles, and neatly display a small selection of products. Add for the love of God, please coach perspective pet owners about the severity and responsibility of pet ownership.
Always great services and has everything I need to care for our Pacman frog, Slippy! As a new amphibian owner, The Pet Stop helped me learn how to give Slippy the best life! Getting to love on Ella and the tortoise doesnt hurt, either! I am excited to see their finished reno (aka art project)!
I dont see how anyone can give this man a bad review, I absolutely love going here. George is by far the sweetest most caring man I have ever met.I have bought Two snakes from him along with two sugar gliders, he has literally gone out of his way to make sure that i always had information, even if it came to me calling him at random times or messaging him on Facebook. Yes animal care is hard but I kid you not, every time I walk into that shop George is always cleaning. Its very rare that you see him sitting down and relaxing, this man is always on top of that store. When ever I hear of someone wanting a starter pet or even a pet in general that has to do with a reptile etc, I refer George.Keep up the great work!
Stopped in here the other day, none of the workers are wearing masks. They didnt interact with us until we asked a question. Place is just filthy. Quite frankly just a trashy place with not very friendly people. Walked out of there wandering how this business stays afloat
We were told about this place from a friend and stopped in about 20 minutes ago and the gentleman couldn’t have been nicer and more knowledgeable. Gave us some samples for our young bearded dragon to try and he housed down the stuff like he’d been waiting for it all along. I’ll be stopping back in on Tuesday to stock up and will be going there from now on. Highly recommend this place.
I can’t say anything about the customer service here but i can say that although there were animals and some insect feeders I didn’t see much of anything in terms of supplies and the store was FILTHY. Animal keeping is a messy business, but I mean it when I say this store looks and smells as if it has never been cleaned. Substrate, feces, dozens of discarded sheds, and thick layers of dust and grime coated the floor and every shelf and cage in there, and the whole impression was one of disregard. It doesn’t help that the store is cramped and there are a large dog and several birds running around as well. I’ll get my feeders in Beacon.
Was told about this place from my vet. The dude running the shop is so sweet! My frilled dragon wouldnt eat and I was at a lost. He gave me some samples to try with him and I couldnt be more greatful! Highly recommend this place to anyone who has a reptile! Will be going there for now on to get my lizard his food.
Short review: the best and most under rated pet store in the entire Hudson Valley. I 100% recommend them for anything pet related. Dont judge a book by its cover. This place has a variety of great, healthy and happy animals.Long review: I bought feeder fish that my turtle didnt eat and even the fish are living amazing healthy lives 6+ months later. This place has many different types of pets and feeders. They also offer great advice. And the prices are reasonable with great deals. Ive been to hundreds of pet stores in my lifetime and I am grateful to have this one in our area.
Hands down best pet shop most places have nine employees with attitudes not tys i felt comfortable to be myself and ask questions and be a customer other places its all teens that know everything and all the animals look bad not at tys ball pythons kept correctly and not in a fish tank with a heat lamp kudos bro the shop is awesome its a trip but we will be back oh and everything is priced accordingly shop here it truly is the best pet shop
Pet Stop was the first store that me and my children claimed as our store when we moved here a few years ago. I am so glad that under new ownership, the store once again carries pets and is much larger and nicely organized again. The new owner is very knowledgeable about all of the animals that he has in the shop. All of the animals are loved on every day. He even has a few who are rescues. Visit the NEW pet stop you wont be disapointed.
The only place to go for live feeder rats anymore. More importantly the absolute best for pet advice thats not about selling Especially for birds and reptiles! They even offer in shop bird sitting services including the grouchiest parrots which seem to adore him! Just past the light by the Balmville school on 9w they are a little tricky to get in and out of but worth it. Run by true pet lovers that make it feel like youre visiting friends :-)
I have been going there. For over 3 years and people need not to talk about things they dont know. The owner has an exotic license and the aligators and monkeys he was asked to taken from the newburgh police department after they were confiscated from a person that was selling exotic and illegal pets in ny they help me setup saltwater aquarium and also give print out care sheets for all there animals all you have to do is ask before you judge !!
I would like to inform everyone as the new owner of The Pet Stop pet shop is once again a pet shop. its not anywhere near the size it once was but slowly and surely im trying to make get back to its once great place for friends and family. im here for everyones reptiles, small mammals and bird needs. As a former customer of the old Pet Stop i to was disappointed in the former owners decision in making it just a feed and supply shop whatever their reason but if it wasnt for their hard work and dedication to the shop i wouldnt be able to work to restore it back. with the help of the communicate im hoping to be here for a long time to feed and help in the care and love of the pets of the Hudson Valley. The Pet Stop .. where we Stop to love our Pets !!! hope to see all of you here and come see the great changes already made !
Ive been going to the Pet Stop since I was a little kid. My father used to own a lot of exotic pets (reptiles and frogs) and the Pet Stop was always like the reptile show, but always open. However, the shop has changed hands since then and for the most part the staff is clueless. Im a big rat fan, so about a year and a half ago I went in to purchase a rat, as my current one was alone in her cage and rats need a cagemate to stay happy. The first problem with the rats there is that they keep entire litters of rats in these little shoebox-sized tupperwares, and judging by the amount of feces in the bedding I would say they might have changed them once a week. The amount of rats in those boxes should have been cleaned up after once a day at least. I already knew this, but Im the type who wants to help rescue animals from poor conditions rather than not giving the store my business in protest, so I picked out a beautiful himalayan girl. She was rather skinny, had fur stained with her own feces and was being kept in a tupperware with a large male, likely her brother. She was of an age where she easily could have been pregnant already, but fortunately for me she never had any pinkies after she came home. Second-guessing myself, I asked the employee assisting me to make sure she was female, which he blatantly had no idea how to do. He then grabbed her by her tail and pulled her out of the tupperware. Pulling a rats tail can cause spinal damage, and is one of the cruelest things you can do to them. I cant be sure because I never brought her to a vet to find out, but I believe she did have damage done to her tail because she had an awfully hard time climbing her entire life, which was probably caused by her tail malfunctioning. She was also partially blind, possibly due to inbreeding but I cant be sure. She was put in a cardboard box to be brought home, which was full of green diarrhea by the time we arrived. As she continued to live with me her physical health improved, but her entire life she was riddled with anxiety, and she never started to trust me until she was nearly a year old. She had a very strong bond with my other rat, and when I removed the other rat from the cage for free-range time she would freeze up and stay in the cage corner until I put her companion back. She couldnt have free-range time because she would hide behind things and both times I let her out I had to work at it for hours before I could find her and put her back. If she hadnt been traumatized, she would have been able to free-range normally, as she would have had no fear of people and come back for a treat. Finally, she died extremely young. She was less than a year old when she passed away. She seemed to be in perfect health and was finally beginning to warm up to being handled, but I believe the death of her cagemate may have caused her health to deteriorate. Her cagemate was much older and suffered from chronic respiratory issues, but was from a different pet store so I cant go into more detail. I have to say I dont know much about the other animals sold there, but the rats are kept in awful conditions, and I dont think its right to keep them this way even if theyre intended to be sold as reptile feed.
I used to love this place, but ALOT has changed....ever heard of tattooed fish? Look it up, its not natural, its animal cruelty, and they sell them. I noticed them in a tank, not for sale, and thought oh hey, maybe someone turned them in... It was the only odity i noticed that day... A week later, they were for sale! The worst part was they were also selling painted fish, and multi-colored parrot fish (they do not come in blue and green...) If you look it up, there is tons of articles about how it is the big thing in Thailand, China, etc...and how only a percentage of the fish live through the process. It was just horrible to see that...Service was OK, Although I asked what species a fish was and he said Cichlid...I have two cichlid tanks, Mbuna Cichlid 55 gallon and a 125 Peacock/Hap Cichlids...So he had to go get another guy, who continued to guess. As for the tattoo/dyed/painted fish for sale alone, I will never shop there again...
TALK ABOUT ANIMAL CRUELTY! THEY HAVE THESE POOR ALIGATORS IN A TANK ON THE FLOOR THEY ARE LONGER THAN THE TANK IS WIDE THEY POOR CREATURES CANT EVEN TURN AROUND! THE OWNERS ARE CARELESS & HAVE NEVER EVEN OWNED AN AQUARIUM! ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS $$$ LOOK AT ALL THE DEAD ANIMALS. LOOK HOW THE FISH ARE CRAMED INTO TANKS THEY DONT FIT IN! SMELL THE PLACE FOR GOD SAKES. NOW THEY HAVE MONKEY WHICH ARE COVERED WITH MITES. THEY HAVE NO ROOM, NOTHING TO DO IT MAKES ME CRY. THE PREVIOUS OWNERS MIKE & RICH THEN JUST RICH WOULD BE APPALLED! EVERYONE SAYS TO GET A DISCOUNT ALL YOU MEN HAVE TO DO IS FLIRT WITH A MAN NAMED MAX. NO ONE IS PROPERLY TRAINED. IF THEY PASS AN INSPECTION THEN OUR ANIMAL LOVERRS ARE BLIND! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME GET THIS PLACE SHUT DOWN.

2022-05-23We were recommended, and grateful we were! Our son was interested in a bearded dragon, so we visited George and were able to learn a lot about them, and the responsibilities with taking care of one.George was patient, thorough and provided his expertise giving us the opportunity to make a well informed decision.A year after bringing our baby home, and we still visit weekly. George always ask how our dragon is doing, gives us tips, and takes the time to answer any questions we may have.As a small business owner myself, I value that connection with my clients. Its a down home small business way, and George provides that relationship. He cares very deeply about his animals, and the humans that take care of them ❤

2022-06-18My husband and I haven’t been here in a while and decided to go back and get some feeders for our pets. Upon arrival the store was closed when clearly they should have opened 30mins prior to our arrival. There was a gentleman sitting outside just somoking in front of the shop. My husband gets out the car to see if anyone was inside and nothing. Make a long story short the gentleman outside was the owner and didn’t even acknowledge the fact that we were there. No, hey sorry I’m going to be opening up in a few just have an issue , left my keys something. Now we remember why we stopped going there. He is very argent and not friendly at all. And after reading the reviews I really do hope that this place did get a facelift as it was exactly how others have mentioned.

2021-12-09Gorgeously remodeled 😍 Very creative & original. Just like the owner. George is the best pet store owner. He is transparent, dedicated and knowledgeable. Hes capable of caring for an incredible variety of creatures and ensures they all go to safe homes. He encourages people to do their research and asks the right questions when they want to buy. The atmosphere is so inviting and has only improved over time. Purchased my first rescue from here about 1yr ago. My partner & I havent been anywhere else since. Excited to see what the future has in store! Or what the store has in the future (; PETSMART SUCKS

2021-01-05George (the owner) is the best! His shop is small but he has a great selection of animals. Because the shop is small he was able to give me 1 on 1 attention and made sure to give me everything I needed. I left as happy customer. Also, his tortoise roams free in the store and is totally awesome!I will definitely be back for more! You should stop by and support this local business.

2021-01-30Love this shop. Very knowledgeable and helpful. Ella, the dog is so sweet. She loves Carrots 🥕. Not your big box pet store, just filled with pets and some supplies. Best price for live food like, crickets and super worms.
