An informative tour that continued to entertain. It was great to be able to explore the entire ship and learn more about its history. We had some young children in our tour group and they were just as fascinated with everything as the adults in the group.I do want to mention that its not the most handicap accessible, which is to be expected on a ship. I went with someone with bad knees and she wasnt able to go below deck because of how steep the stairs were. Its nothing that can be helped but I did want to point that out for people who may be looking to take someone who doesnt handle stairs well.
This was the best tour I have ever been on. I took the family of 6 (4 kids ranging from 3 to 10 yrs old) and all of us loved it. These kids are not strangers to tours. The initial tour was with Sarah and she did great! There are some interactive stations to put helmets on and try out moving the big guns. The initial tour was great but the Engine room tour was out of this world. For $5 more we had tour guide Gary who is a volunteer and been working with the uss slater for 20+ years. Engine room tour for 13 yes and older. This tour gave a better insight and understanding of the inner workings of the ship. Every question answered with great knowledge and understanding. To hear about all they work they are doing and have done is just amazing. its great to see the accomplishments of what people can do when they put their minds to it and work together.
Great detailed tour. The tour guide was knowledgeable about WWII and we got a fabulous experience inside the battleship. We asked a lot of questions and tour guide was able to answer those all. I would definitely recommend this as one of the ‘to-do’ activities while visiting Albany, NY
My Dad Charles Amthor served on U.S.S. Swasey Destroyer Escort in North Atlantic during W.W. II. He was a motor machinist mate who maintained the diesel engines. We visited the Slater a couple times. Many thanks to those who served. And to the crew that maintains this piece of our history.
We went on a tour of the USS Slater during the weekday around lunch time and we got a private tour of the ship for no extra charge. The ship is beautifully restored and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Going through the rooms and up and down the decks could be a bit of a challenge due to the tight quarters on the ship, but it was tons of fun!
First, let me emphasize that Austin, our tour guide, was the absolute best - friendly, cheerful, humorous, informative, and engaging! The tour itself was fascinating. Both my wife and I and our six young children thoroughly enjoyed the experience. There was something for everyone! The youngest especially enjoyed sitting in the gunner seats and steering the guns 😊 If youre visiting Albany, then apartmenyt from the downtown museum, tower, and capitol stop, this is an absolute must-see.
Very informative tour of the last destroyer escort afloat! After a brief DVD/video about the use of the destroyer escort in WWII we boarded and toured the majority of the ship. Well-informed guide who spoke about how and when weapons were used, where the men slept and ate, a review of the various duties on board, and questions were encouraged. Despite the very warm weather (my car read 100 F) I really enjoyed this. There were children as young as 3 and as old as 80 🤔 - all seemed interested in what we learned aboard ship. I recommend!
Visited Albany to see friend from Detroit. It’s Friday afternoon and tour was conducted in small group. I love history and knew bit about WW2. However, It was first time I got to know the life of Sailors inside the ship during the war. Our guide was excellent and we learned so much. I’m not sure how I felt.... it was hard to imagine what young people went through... Must have been very steep learning environment for lots of them. Tour is educational and also you get to relax by the riverside.Free parking and easy access to the building.Donations will keep going this great piece of history and education. Well recommended. :)
A very interesting and well priced tour. I would defiantly recommend this if you even have a slight interest in naval warfare! Also, something which I wasn’t sure of. Parking onsite is free and they don’t close the gates until 4.30. At least this was the case on the day we visited.
Wonderful time. Learned a lot from the guide (I wished I remembered his name - he was excellent (did the 3:30 tour on 10/24/21)). The tour was fantastic for people of all levels of interest in the Navy. If you had a question, the guide was quick to provide insight. The ship is beautifully preserved - you really get a sense for the realities of how mariners lived during WW2, right down to the windshield wipers.A must-see site in Albany. The reasonably priced 9$ admission is worth every penny
I had the pleasure of Alan giving the guided tour. He was extremely knowledgeable, nice, and hilarious! He made it very personable with stories of his dad. The tour lasted just over an hour. It could go longer or shorter depending on how many questions everyone asks. I definitely learned some interesting facts today. Overall, pretty amazing!
Went with three other people on a Sunday morning so no line or other big tours going on. It is an amazing experience and a remarkable piece of history since it is the last floating destroyer you can go on. Our tour guide Grant was awesome, very knowledgeable and impassioned towards the ship. This is a must for any Albany trip.
Our guide, Cassidy, was excellent! She was informative, fun, & kept visitors engaged during the entire tour. Having moments to walk around on our own and then meet up as a group again was a wonderful experience. The ship is in great condition and you can see the expertise & care taken in preserving this unique part of our history. Signs, posters, sounds, & sights all helped make the experience come to life for the viewer. Working in a museum myself, I can see how much attention the staff give to creating an in depth experience for viewers in every aspect possible. Well done!
We were very fortunate to get there early Sunday morning and be part of a small tour group. Our guide asked if everyone was NOT in a hurry - when we all agreed we got one office ultimate tours! He showed us areas that regular tours dont get to see and gave us more than the usual tour talk. It was great!!!I think our tour guides name was Craig or Greg, I just remember he was a Coast Guard retiree from his shirt. Thanks, this was great and my brother really enjoyed it.
I’ve been driving past this ship for 4-years. I finally stopped in today to take the tour with my family. Our tour guide Austyn provided a great tour. He was very knowledgeable about the ship and provided a lot good of information. It was very interesting to see the conditions these brave sailors endured while serving on this ship. The tour is well worth it!!!
This is an amazing place to visit in Albany. The history you feel from the moment you go aboard touches your soul. The tour guides are not only all knowledgeable about The Slater and her history but are well versed in The history of Destroyer Escorts and the US Navy. I highly recommend you take the time to visit the Slater and let yourself be transported back in time!
This was a great way to spend an hour or so in Albany. The volunteers who work on the USS Slater are committed to making sure the ship’s history is well preserved. They are knowledgeable and friendly. It is definitely geared for people interested in the military and history, but there’s really something for everyone to enjoy. Our tour guide was Art. I couldn’t imagine a better tour guide. I could write a whole review just on him, but I have no doubt the other tour guides are also excellent. My one disclaimer is that it’s not very handicap accessible. I think that goes with the territory of a 1940s war ship, but the ladders and stairs would make it difficult/ impossible for those with limited mobility.
We took both the escorter ship tour and the engine room tour on our first trip to Albany and absolutely loved both! Special shout out to Sarah, our main tour guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable, answered all our questions, made the experience fun and interactive. Definitely recommend!P.S. My mom asked me to mention that it was the best tour shes been on in a while :)))
What a great tour. It really brought to light the stories my Father used to tell about being on a ww2 minesweeper. Shows how hard the greatest generation had to work to run a tight ship in tough conditions! God bless all their souls and thanks for their contributions to our world!
Really cool ship, we enjoyed hearing about its story. The gun turrets were still operational and it was awesome being able to manuever them ourselves. Cece gave a great tour, and held her own against a know-it-all in the group trying to upstage her. An absolute must if youve got an hour to kill in Albany.
USS Slater (DE-766) is a Cannon-class destroyer escort that served in the United States Navy and later in the Hellenic Navy. The ship was named for Frank O. Slater of Alabama, a sailor killed on the cruiser USS San Francisco during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. He was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for gallantry in action and the Purple Heart. Following service during World War II, the ship was transferred to Greece and renamed Aetos. Decommissioned in 1991, the destroyer escort was returned to the United States.
I just left with my family, and it was a great experience. Sarah was our tour guide; she was extremely friendly and informed us of any questions left. I wanted to give her a tip but she said I can donate it in the box! She is a angel. Its scorching hot out deck. tough job.
Wow! This tour blew our expectations. Our guide, John, gave us a very detailed tour of the USS Slater and answered many questions we had about WW2. He took his time and made sure to go through every single portion of the ship.My friend and I thought it was a bargain for the time and thoroughness of the tour. 100% would recommend.Tour was so great I forgot to take pictures. Lol
I brought my daughters (7 and 9) to visit the USS Slater on a day off from school. Our tour guide, Austin, was extremely knowledgeable, and gave a fantastic tour. He answered all of the kids’ (occasionally ridiculous) questions, and had a wealth of interesting facts. The boat itself is very interesting and well preserved/restored. If you’re looking for a fun and interesting thing to do in Albany, don’t miss the USS Slater - it was far more fun than I imagined. Highly recommended!
Visited 9/2/2020 on the first day the ship was back open after restoration. Had a wonderful tour by volunteer vet who served on similar ship. Ship is in very good condition and all the details still there to see. Staff all very friendly. Would recommend for kids and adults alike. Under 5s dont get a lot out of it and just frazzle their parents - we found out first hand.
Such a great attraction in Albany, NY.I brought my 2 young kids over the summer and they both enjoyed seeing the items on the boat. My youngest did have a little trouble with the ship stairs, they are a little steep for little legs, but that didnt dampen his spirits at all. Our tour guide was great, he knew so much about the boat. If you are ever in the area, this tour is a must stop!
Beautiful day, perfect for the combined outside and inside portions of the tour. Some areas were a bit tight, but manageable even with a toddler and infant in a baby carrier. Ended up with a private tour, and our guide Sarah was great and flexible with gearing toward the interests of our 2 year old.
Learn our US Navy history from actual sailors! From the officers quarters to the engine room to the ammunition and artillery used to protect our fighting sailors during WW2! Teach your children and grandchildren what it took for teenage men to protect our USA from foreign invasion. Teach them!
The tour was very interesting. We got to see the quarters of the enlisted men compared to what the officers got to experience. Seeing the different guns and shells was fun. We also got to see the various depth charges and the way they were deployed. Our tour guide was super knowledgeable, nice, and friendly. We even got to see the electric potato peeler. Price is super reasonable, parking is free. I definitely recommend this tour.
It is a truly great experience for people who like history... even my sister who hate learning about history enjoyed the tour. The facts are all interesting and the tour was extensive and fun. Great place to go with family but not the best for young children as there is a lot of climbing ladders and plenty of tripping hazards on the ship. Overall a great way to spend a couple of hours.
We were upstate and stumbled upon the USS Slater, and, loved the tour (we had not known much about “escort” Naval history , and it was incredibly interesting. We were blessed to have our tour guide, Cassidy, all to ourselves and her encyclopedic knowledge was perfect for my husband’s barrage of “unique” questions. Absolutely recommend .
This Escort destroyer is a must see. Very informative, amazing tour. It was great to see the quarters, bridge, radio room and so much more. You get to climb ladders, man the guns. Also it was very educational,Ive learned so much about the ship. I was very happy with are tour guide Brea she explained how everything worked to the tee. It was the coolest thing Ive done in years.
Awesome piece of history. The last floating destroyer in its class. Terrific guided visit that show the rough leaving quarter on board and the state of the art technology for ww2. Guides are passionate. The tour is fast pace and enjoyable and brings tons of interesting anecdotes. Definitively a good visit!
Me, my parents, and my boyfriend went here for a tour. It was a really amazing experience. I learned so much, and have so much respect for the people that risked their lives during war. The man that took us on the tour was very kind, always smiling , and had so much information to share. You could tell he really loves what he does. If you have the chance to go here, I highly recommend it!
USS Slater (DE-766) is a Cannon-class destroyer escort that served in the United States Navy and later in the Hellenic (Greek) Navy.
John was our tour guide! Very knowledgeable and genuinely answered all of our questions enthusiastically. It truly is a hidden gem located in the heart of Downtown Albany : only 2 of these ships remain in the world, the one in Albany being the only one afloat, the other one in Galveston being on land. It felt like we were back in 1945 while touring this museum. I hope they keep the museum as it is as it represents an important part of our history.
Tour guide was well-versed in his knowledge of the USS Slater. This was a really cool experience to partake in. If you are a history buff or just have an interest in our past, I highly recommend doing on this guided tour of the USS Slater. The gift shop also has some really cool items in it too.
My wife and i decided to partake in a tour of the USS Slater and let me tell you what it was worth every penny and then some. Our tour guide John was entertaining, full of personality and had a inconceivable amount of knowledge on the ship. The tour was incredibly fun, educational and quite frankly one of the best things to do in Albany if your looking for something which is inexpensive along with entertaining. I dont know if it was the ship, the history behind the ship or our tour guide john who did such an amazing job giving us the tour but what I will say if you are in the Albany area and are looking for something to do, a tour of the USS Slater will not disappoint.
The tour gave us all the information we could ask for on this ship!! The price was just right and the extra engine room tour is a no question add-on and also priced right. We paid $15 each for both tours and are very happy we did. I would recommend caution with elderly and small children. You do need the ability to climb and squeeze in smaller entrances. The engine room requires more attention and safety but totally worth it!!! We learned SO MUCH and got to see so much history.
Its a great tour and excellent value. The restoration is being done by volunteers. They have gone to great effort to preserve the history of this vessel. If you are in Albany its well worth an hour of your time and is an inexpensive visit....but feel free to donate more if you want.
Absolutely fantastic! I stopped in on a whim, though going and visiting old battleships is a hobby of mine. We got a guided tour, which normally I shy away from, but our tour was fantastic! The tour guide was very knowledgeable, had served in the Coast Guard himself, and told us both the standard tour bits, but also tailored the tour to our group. He Taylor The Experience based on how long we wanted to be there, which was a bit longer than normal, as we were a group of veterans who were very interested in the history of the ship. It was a personal enjoyable experience. I would highly recommend this for families, school trips, or any navy veteran just wanting to reconnect. The ship is well-maintained, and is a great piece of History sitting in the middle of downtown Albany.
A great way to spend an hour or two. This WWII destroyer, the last of its kind, is manned by knowledgeable and dedicated volunteers who guide you through the ship and paint a vivid picture of what life was like for the men who were on it. Great for older kids (8+). The tour is difficult for very young and mobility impaired due to climbing ladderwells. There are wheelchair ramps to get into the ship store, informational video, and onto the deck of the ship, but wheelchairs cannot access the full tour due to the tight spaces and lifted doors.
A fascinating, restored piece of American military history that is definitely worth seeing. The guides are knowledgeable and friendly. I would suggest trying to get in a smaller group with few children if possible in order to have the best experience. (My group was too large and the kids ruled the roost.) Overall, surely worth a visit.
Probably the nicest museum ship Ive ever visited. Extremely high quality restoration work, very knowledgeable tour guides, and no glass panels blocking off the compartments. For a additional $6 you can get a guided tour of two after engine rooms (be sure to ask the cashier about this). Only disappointment is that you cant roam the ship freely at all; once the tour is over, you have to get off.
We had a great time at the USS Slater today. Our three young boys greatly enjoyed the tour and learned a lot, in particular our six year old. He asked our tour guide Priscilla questions constantly throughout the tour and she was great, answering all his questions and staying patient with all our little guys.I would definitely recommend the USS Slater tour to anyone interested in WW2 or naval history and kids will have a great time.
Enjoyed a tour of this amazing piece of history as a Mothers Day gift from my daughters. It was wonderful, the tour guide was knowledgeable , funny and very patient with two little girls on the tour. I love the reference to the movie Mr. Roberts,( the palm tree!!! ) Gave new respect and admiration to all those who serve, a big Thank You!!!!!
Very interesting tour that really gives you an appreciation for the conditions in which our men and women served in WWII. The ship is very small in comparison to the vessels of today, but it served a very important purpose. I highly recommend spending a couple of hours to tour this piece of history.
This ship (like all in her class) is named for an American hero who lost his life defending our nation...fun and humbling hour with our excellent guide (John E) learning about life and routine aboard this proud ship. Lots of fun “hands on” operating gun turrets, climbing ladders, and hearing the sounds of a Navy ship underway....A fun activity for all ages, landlubbers and sailors alike!
This is a fun little stop if you are a history buff. Be forewarned that if you are not physically able to climb up and down ladders this place is not for you. You get a wonderful tour of above and below deck all well getting the history of each cabin and room made to look like how it looked when it was occupied.
Among the best restored ship tours out there, the effort and dedication of the volunteers really shows. This is not as much a museum ship, as it is a period-correct restoration. The Slater is an excellent representation of how a WWII era combat ship looked and felt, at the time of its service. The tour volunteer at the time of my visit really knew the ship, and genuinely enjoyed giving the tour. The high point for me was learning the original Captain of this ship haddonated to the Slater the very same items he had in the cabin during WWII. If youre into US Navy and WWII history, this one is a real cant miss.
Great piece of Naval history, and we are lucky to have it here in Albany. She is not the biggest ship out there, bit she is the last of her kind. Volunteers have put a lot of time and effort to get the Slater in the shape it is now. It is a great piece of american history worthy to stop and see.
Took my dubious 10 year old daughter who ended up enjoying the tour of this WWII destroyer/escort ship. I myself was enthralled. Our tour guide, Art, was very knowledgeable and really made the history come alive. Its amazing to realize that young American men took this very ship into harms way in defense of our country back in the 1940s.
I was lucky enough to tour the USS Slater with Art as our guide. He was friendly, handled answers with ease and was very generous with his time. I was amazed at all the work the team had done to restore the ship to its WWII appearance. If youre into naval or military history, theres no question that this is worth a stop.
There maybe more famous WWII ships to tour but youll not likely find one with more attention to the details of fighting and living on a ship in a historical setting. The Slater has been lovingly restored with countless artifacts turning it into a time machine. The staff is friendly and our guide had assimilated many stories from sailors who served on these ships. Even members of my family not usually interested in history were captivated by the story. Attention WWII buffs...you cannot find these kinds of details in books.
My son and I had a wonderful tour aboard the Slatter today. The volunteer staff were organized, professional and very informative. The USS Slater is a US Historic Landmark that is certianly worth a visit. Children can be told about history or you can bring them to the Slater where they can experience it.
A must-see for anyone visiting or even passing-by Albany. This has to be the biggest highlight of the city. It was absolutely amazing to see so much history, and the ship that one could tell was painstakingly restored to its glory. The tour was amazing and I cant wait for them to open more sections of the ship (they are doing gradually). The tour guide deserves a plus cause he was loud, clear and engaging.Couldnt have asked for a better way to kill time in Albany. 90 mins for $8. Whats not to love. :)
Percilla was a fantastic guide for this engaging tour of the USS Slater. The tour included most of the noteworthy parts of the ship, less the engine room. The ship is constantly being worked on by dedicated volunteers and is the only still-floating Cannon-class destroyer escort! See “USS Slater (DE-766)” on Wikipedia for more background. Enjoy!
While it was neat to see the boat, there was a severe lack of information, and even figuring how to board was not clearly marked. The boat was on fire need of some paint and dirty. The ONE guide on duty already had a tour group going through so there was no one to meet and greet other people who were arriving.
I went there today 9/23/2020 and I’d like to thank the tour guide John I think his name was he went very into detail about the ship he was extremely friendly and answered all the questions I had . He helped me get over my fear of ships and I was amazed at the ship thanks a lot for it

2022-05-30I did this tour this past weekend and it was totally awesome! Our tour guide Art was very knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. He really knows how to keep an audience (especially kids) captivated by the history of this great battleship. You can clearly see that this ship is very well maintained and loved. The price for general admission is only $10 for adults and $8 for children, which doesnt include the tour of the engine room. Tickets along with some really nifty souvenirs can be purchased in the gift shop. Since some of the tour is going up and down in small spaces, those that are a certain height (above 6 ft might be a bit uncomfortable). Overall, this museum is a definite must see for all ages!

2022-06-03Nice people. Our tour guide made it super fun for everyone. Next time we are in the area we plan on going again to do the longer tour where you see more of the ship.

2021-07-11Highly highly recommended. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative; really gave you a good feel for what life could have been like when the ship was active. Also its the last ship of its kind; and unlike other boat museum ships you can actually sit on and move the ships guns around.

2021-08-02Toured the USS Slater with my family on Saturday. Our tour guide Austin, was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable, made the tour enjoyable and fun. You could tell he really enjoyed his job. My family and I learned so much and have now fallen in love with the Slater. Cant wait to go back!

2022-05-11The Slater was a better trip than I thought it would be, not that I thought it would be bad but I didnt expect the kids to have a blowout of such fun! As a group sleeping over, the tour was informative but free time is where the kids get to use their imagination and roam the boat freely with their friends. The guys running the tours are fantastic, thank you for the great experience!

2021-08-28Austin was our tour guide of the USS Slater. His knowledge of the USS Slaters and destroyer escorts during WWII is impressive. He made this tour a fun and a good learning experience. He handled all of our questions with an indepth knowledge of someone passionate about his job. Once he found out that I am a retired US Navy Chief, he included the Goats locker in the tour - what a score as the smell of coffee greeted us when we stepped into the Mess.Austin also included a visit in the radio room when he found out about my retired USMC husbands morse code interceptor background. All in all a very enjoyable afternoon

2021-06-10Great little ship that played a big role in WW2. The group that owns and runs the ship museum has done a fantastic job restoring and maintaining the ship. Wished I could have stayed onboard longer and explored the ship without having to be part of a tour. Otherwise, I fantastic place to visit.
